Toadie's SmallArms WIP thread

This is a bit of a two-part work in progress thread, covering sort of related but independent weapon packs. All of it is brought together by the unifying theme that I'm doing all fresh character animation of all of it,because that's what I do.

I want to, while I'm here, give props to Kiory for cracking the 3dsmax-to-oxygen/RTM pipeline for animation. I'd been working fruitlessly on solving it for months, and for him to have such a simple solution... practically inspired.

SHARBSE Weapons

So I come from a Half-life and Source engine background, and a small bunch of fellow devs have been playing fairly regularly playing Arma3 ,or S.H.A.R.B.S.E, as it's known to us, throughout the year. Since literally two weeks from Public Alpha being available, I've been filling requests for the crew on a per-weapon basis, getting to grips with how entirely divorced RV engine is from most others in it's the way it handles many things (for better or for worse). To the point, it's at a stage where we've got more guns than players in our group, so in the spirit of sharing I'm cleaning up what's in the pack already, making sure I'm gravy with the right licenses, and releasing them in what I hope to be constant flow.

Every weapon comes with multiple magazines available to them (usually ball/FMJ and Tracer at least), and ballistics and penetration data matched as close as can be interpreted for real-life loads, which means that the WW2 bolt-actions are ridiculously effective under 400m with just iron sights, even against future-tech plate carriers.

As a major plus to this process, there's all new weapon reload animations being produced for every unique battery of arms, some with variation.

For Hire: A3 Edition

For Hire is my Source-engine pet project, has a what you might call eccentric weapons roster- a combination of milsurp and civ-legal weapons like the SKS and Remington 799, and high end NFA and LE gear like the Arctic Warfare Covert and SOAR, with a unifying theme that that it all must be available in some form in the US as of 2012. I ported these because, honestly, I wanted to see what the concept might look like in expanded scale on another engine, and as bit of a promo for For Hire itself. Also , honestly, more guns in A3 is never a bad thing. Unlike the first project, these weapons will be released as a bulk lot, and all of them are all my own work. All weapons will come with custom animations though. Because that's my thing more than modelling itself.

Lastly, while I won't be taking requests per-se for character animation, I'll be putting up unbinarised RTMs with code snippets for everyone to use, and should cover a good portion of most battery of arms. Also, once I'm satisfied that it's not going to screw anyone over(as demonstrated in the video at the top of the page, right now the right hand fingers certainly will), I'll put up my CAT rig under the same idea of free use.

Glad to see you are starting to release the awesomeness to the world! (I'm one of the folks that play regularly as mentioned)

We are always looking for a few extra trigger fingers, just need a way to organize the fun and perhaps we can play together when he releases this stuff.

i really like those animations. and that list of coming weapons is epic. as is the fact you are realting it to real world data. awesoem attention to detail.

I dig animations, it brings weapon to whole different standard.Not just model and texture on spotlight, animation is very important feature as well!

In what program did you rigged animation, and why do you think weapon modelers don't implement animations too?

Wow impressive work! I didnt think the community was able to deliever such qualitative animations!

Is there the SLIGHTEST possibility that you will maybe improve other animations of the game as well? For example the animation of soldiers that get hit is just awfull and more laughable than anything else. (bending back and forth like a gummiband)

The game would benefit massively from your skill!

One thing I will point out is that the video of the AK animations is a bit old, the timings on the version we use are far, far better! Later, with permission from toadie I might upload some game footage.

Animation is still kind of like an Arcane Art- lots of hearsay and "it just works" still involved, and few people openly practicing it. Extending that analogy, animation for ArmA is like a branch of that which the knowledge of is only transferred down bloodlines through the generations, stumbling on it's existence is so rare most people are convinced it isn't real.

That, and trying to animate in Oxygen is an exercise in tedium, I don't think that helps either.

3ds max (using kiory workflow i assume). you don't rig an animation btw, you rig a character, and create an animation

Woah, very good job on the animations. I'll say the assets aren't the best, but I'm sure that could easily be remedied. They at least look up to par with A2 stuff, if not quite up to the A3 level or perty. But then, none of the other weapon addons ATM do really. Awesome job, totally following this closely :)

Watching your video that got almost 1000 views it makes me think that people want to learn how to make good looking animations that you produce.Not only that but I noticed

that you put description in video almost like a few pointers about rigging.Maybe you could consider making tutorial or livestream to banish arcane art analogy ; D

Fukken amazing. Srsly, proper reloading animations do so much to enhance the weapons feel. No more need to use hacked stock animations! I hope other gun modders will make ample use of this so generously provided rtm pack. I am looking forward to this so much now!

If you want some good photos of a black AK-47U I own one in semi auto. You will have to tweak it add full auto and 1-2 rivit/pins but I can take photos of it in detail if need be. Even has a Russian Can on it. Also have a Rifle Dynamics AK which has seen some use by contractors. That one is in a olive drab.
