The mountains in the island's center began to be used as artillery nests and over watch positions by the rebels towards the end of 2015. Previously the government had fortified the mountains and a stalemate ensued due to the harsh climate in the high peaks. This changed because of a rebel offensive in which victory was achieved with the help of the Russian Volunteer Legion, who some claim single handedly won the battle. DSS botched their attempt at driving through a detour, which unsuspectingly turned out to be enter into a lower-level Maldenian rebel encampment. With the airport just 5 minutes from their location, they lose 2 officers one without even hope of medevac who lost his life in the rear of a civilian van.
