Syria - What should we do if anything?

Recommended Posts

Another note regarding the Russian naval presence that I didn't think of when it was brought up: There is no way that the Russians will ever go to war for Syria. The only sane reason for the Russian government to send ships to the region is to provide a 3rd party, neutral early launch warning system, thereby rendering the launch of cruise missiles rather ineffective. The moment they'd be fired, the Syrians would be made aware of it, so knocking out their warning systems wouldn't help, and would enable them to intercept them if the Russians have sold them the means to do so.

They're there to make a small scale intervention impractical. If anyone thinks they're there to take an active part in hostilities, that person needs his head examined.

They did the same for Saddam Hussein - sold GPS jammers to make bombs miss targets.

Well some jamming equipment may be switched on 'by mistake of some young inexperienced sailor' too... You know it takes some time to teach the conscripts to deal well with those complex ship systems.

Slight side news but very interesting to say the least:

Eric Harroun, Phoenix Vet Who Fought Syrian Regime, Suddenly Gets a Sweet Plea Deal

This was an eyebrow raiser:

The original charges Harroun was arrested on, supporting a terrorist organization and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction, have been dropped

Hmmmm. Interesting charge to have set for you and then U-turned

Assad did not order Syria chemical weapons attack, says German press

Bild am Sonntag cites high-level German surveillance source suggesting Syrian president was not personally behind attacks

here's the link to the article

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/sep/08/syria-chemical-weapons-not-assad-bild

From the same article :

Addressing a closed meeting of the German parliamentary committee last week, the BND chief Gerhard Schindler said his agency shared the US view that the attack had been launched by the regime and not the rebels. But he said the spy agency had not have conclusive evidence either way, German media reported.

Eh, did you read the second page? By weapons of mass destruction, they refer to his having operated an RPG-7. US civilian laws have a quite different idea of what constitutes a weapon of mass destruction than what the military does.

They most certainly do :) Did you notice the hypocrisy as you got to page 2 also?

Well, he's probably as US agent from the beginning.

No doubt that would be possible, but I guess that would be conspiracy to utter.

Peacekeepers at the Holani heights?

Oh and don't worry they will get their support anyway. Murder of British soldier in London is the prove.

So now they're ambushing Irish troops...good luck to the rebels getting support any more support then they should from us if you kill one of our soldiers.

Well who knows who did what but the main local group is Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade and have been involved in UN kidnappings before. Is a MOWAG T-72 proof?

Attacks directly on Irish troops this month could be related to Minister Shatter's November Middle East tour. Somebody may have disagreed with something or who he met, maybe? Many people interpret a greeting and a hand shake to mean more than it actually does.

We're too late now to do anything.

Should have done so right in the beginning, then MAYBE it would have been beneficial, but now ... That country is now a terrorist pit.

Well, at least there's one upside: If we do decide to go Libya intervention on Syria, it's not like the pilots will actually have to identify which side it is they're striking, seeing as how they're pretty much all hostile to the Western world.

Easier still because that area is inside the UNDOF Area of Limitation on the Golan. Syrian heavy weapons/armour/airforce are not allowed there.

Why I've never! Mr. Assad, committing war crimes and crimes against humanity? Why, the very notion of a the son of a third world dictator dynasty even not paying the fares on a one station bus journey is absurd...

+10 internetz points to the UN for "stating the bleeding obvious". Someone remind me, how much money do we spend for that privilege?

I got to give props to the Syrian Army, the everyday soldier who appear to be fighting a real war on terror, who actually funds and supplies these terrorists? Gives them easy access to flow in and out of Syria, Turkey who initially opened her borders to them has quickly back tracked, I wonder who the other major players are in this... It seems everyone has their hands dirty, but hats off to the Syrian Army who are slogging it out town by town against what appear to be a foreign force of terrorists.

It's somewhat surreal the scale of tragedy that the Syrian people have gone through and are still going through for so long.

The Syrian regime and military are hardly super heroes as far as I'm concerned, but the crass reality is that the world isn't black and white. During the first few months of the civil war, an intervention against the regime could have lead to something better. Granted, it could very well have turned out to be another Libya, but still better. Now though, those who once fought for something we could sort of recognize in our democratic societies are DoD, Dead or Disillusioned. Either they've reached the point where they've decided that democracy and the West can screw itself for not helping out, or they've been killed fighting against the regime, or probably more likely, been kidnapped and executed by the al Qaeda groups.
