BBC News Article: Zombies help ageing title Arma II top video game charts

Recommended Posts

It worries me a slight bit how popular this is getting. People are not buying ArmA because it's a military simulator. They are buying ArmA to play DayZ. It also worries me that the ArmA military simulator fanbase is now the minority and are no longer important to Bohemia Interactive.

I do hope that Bohemia Interactive splits this off as a separate game. That way, we can have the military simulator and the zombie simulatorâ„¢.

You have the Arma fan base, and the DayZ fan base. The Arma fan base is what matters to BIS, the DayZ fan base matters to DayZ team

DayZ...it's an interesting thing. How long will it retain people's interest? Plenty of new players are at it for sure, but will it retain them?

It makes me laugh and laugh that the most popular game in the world is a mod that is designed to, among other things, piss you off. It puts all of this punch pulling, player pandering, health regenerating, epic cutscene foolishness in perspective.

DayZ players don't have ADD.

I don't see them showing up on Arma servers running around shooting and blowing things up like a small but annoying minority group of free players.

If anything, all that walking and walking and walking, creeping around and dieing 50 times a night is excellent training for playing Arma.

Not so sure about that. They recently released that map pack stating that it would be great for your "Zombie Hunts".

DayZ does not piss me off, I enjoy it quite a bit, I just have fears that Bohemia Interactive will soon brush aside the military simulator fan base.

I don't think anyone here has stated that DayZ players have ADD.

It's quite unfortunate. Any new ArmA III video that comes out, it seems most of the comments are "DayZ will look amazing in ArmA III!"

I was commenting on the stated intent of the creator, and contrasting it to the gaming industry norms.

Not here but a lot of Youtube and other forums comments are about how DayZ players are ruining Arma.

The "we need DayZ for this!!!!!111" comments on everything related to Arma 3 is a little tiresome though.

Bohemia is going to have a huge influx of money for developement of Arma, hopefully they'll put that extra cash into giving us the things they put off doing because of costs.

And we finally got maps without having to buy special editions like Arma X. All copies of Arma 3 might ship with maps now.

Rocket might be plotting to overthrow Marek Španěl and take his beanz.

Before DayZ came out, it was, "FDF will look amazing in ArmA I", "ACE will look amazing in ArmA II!" etc (yes, FDF and ACE are realism-based enhancements, DayZ is part fiction, but it is still showing that people are looking forward to a mod and not the actual game). Some day "DayZ" will be replaced by the name of the latest next-big-thing mod.

It's called a sense of humour. ;)

These mods, however, don't necessarily change the scope of ArmA being a milsim. DayZ is more of a surival/PvP thing.

Right. So now ArmA2 is popular, but it's popular for the wrong reasons. Guys should just chill the fuck out & all. Military gamers are not going to be forgotten.

ArmA's military-simulation elements (armour, damage, detection, targetting, counter-measures) are really pretty slap-dash. Its primary strength and true identity is as an open world sandbox which is the foundation on which both the military gaming and role-playing (including Day Z) have always depended. I actually think it'd be a good thing for BI to focus on the sandbox a little more, if you truly dig the military simulation then you really ought to be using ACE anyway, vanilla systems are just too irritating and inconsistent.

They need to push the realism a little farther, though. Many of ACE's features have to be awkwardly tacked on with scripts because the game doesn't provide a good base.

That said, the most important thing they can do is improve playability of controls and UI (without sacrificing depth) and improving. the. ever. loving. AI.

More customers for BIS product equals better product for us why are you guys always fucking tripping out about it.

Really....

BIS isn't going to dumb down Arma for DayZ, if anything it will become its own IP.

On the other hand, maybe Day Z buys us a few more days at the firing range with recording equipment, or an Xaitment license...

It's funny how people running around handing out parking tickets in Chernarus Life or whatever it's called didn't cause this much fuss.

Probably because that wasn't on the scale that DayZ is. Currently, I'm sure that DayZ-only players out number the ArmA military sim players. Those others mods didn't make the primary userbase the minority.

Lol how are you all so sure Arma is a military simulator? For me it simulates nothing. It's just a really fun game.

I've seen plenty of nights in a row were the "Life" servers were completely full and Arma servers empty or damn near empty.

In fact before DayZ appeared the Life servers were consistently beating regular public servers in terms of numbers.

People who bought Arma to play DayZ are not joining Arma servers asking "Where are the zombies, this server needs zombiiesss!!"

the ones I've seen join and know the controls, understand thats it a big sandbox game, death is 1 bullet away, stealth and tactics are nessesary to survive.

If you join a vanilla Chernarus server and there are people causing problems it's more then likely they are Arma 2 Free players

who saw the word FREE and downloaded it without doing any research about what they are grabbing.

This chicken little sky cries of the sky is falling because of DayZ is beyond nonsense.

QFT

It really is quite amusing tbh.

DayZ does nothing but help the ArmA franchise, I can't see any downside whatsoever.

It offers a 'zombie' scenario that nobody else can, because of the awesomeness that is the editor, and a little imagination.

What could be more compelling?

Might want to read what Max Power was actually talking about.
