Ability to roll

Recommended Posts

not sure if this has been covered before

when you walk up to a fence and press STEP OVER you do a scissor step in slow motion.

what would be good is to connect this action to the speed/animation state of your character, so if you are sprinting then you jump and roll, coming up kneeling, weapon raised.

it would lend a lot of excitement to a dash across open ground, where you could jump and roll and come up kneeling behind a pile of tyres, or a vehicle.

If you wanted to step over you would run up to it, stop briefly and press STEP OVER.

I'm sure a modder could make this easily enough - but is there an animation for it?

Concerning realism... with a backpack you would not be able to perform such a roll... maybe except with very tiny ones, such as the Czech vest pouch.

Yeah, maybe if you're a civilian. Try it with a plate carrier and all that goes with it

How about just a jump, not a roll?

EDIT: PvP anim mod has some features like this.

Jumping down is easy BUT how high could an average Arma2 soldier jump with helmet, kevlar, lbe/webbing, weapon, magazines & ammo, boots, grenades, flares, knife, GPS, NVG, batteries, sidearm, binoculars etc? And this doesn't include things like food, water, tools, flashlight and additional clothing, which soldiers tend to carry in the real world.

Whoops, I meant jumping over fences when sprinting towards them. Obviously, just randomly jumping around is pretty of place for ArmA 2. :D

why do you want the ability to troll?

Trolls have more fun.

The soldier are basically always "in combat" in Arma, so they can be considered not to be carrying anything other than what they need for the task at hand.

If Arma had realistic weight and encumberance penalties, would you be carrying extra clothes, food and all that with you, or leave it to your transport/starting point as soon as the mission begins?

the way the jumping over the fence is done in the game is the proper way the army does it. and you cant move all to fast with full gear on.

In many missions, you don't know what you will encounter ... so you try to make reasonable guesses. ACE2 has weight and encumberance penalties ... you wouldn't want to use a M107 sniper rifle for clearing a house room by room. Also, what would be the point of wearing a helmet in the game?

The main point of a simulation is the realism ...

Because the AI cannot use bridges. Therefore the ability to monitor under-bridge areas becomes a necessity.

Yeah. I was saying that in the average Arma mission the soldiers would realistically not be carrying all their non-combat gear (foods, extra clothes, hygiene products etc) with them. Even if they were, they would get rid of it as soon as the shooting starts.

So restricting movement based on the guess that they carry EVERYTHING at all times sounds absurd to me.

Wouldn't matter, why risk breaking your main survival tool (gun) anyway?

It isn't going to function too well with a bent barrel or wrecked optics, or god forbid you pull the trigger with a massive clump of grass stuffed up the barrel.

There are times (in Arma especially) when fast legs are far more important to your survival than a gun.

I think a "gears of war" style roll would be completely fine and realistic, especially if you could do it anytime you wanted.

There is nothing realistic about how it's done in Gears of War.

In real world dudes would have broken necks very fast like that

Lol I know. I was being sarcastic. Especially since you can roll down stairs and such.

If there ever is a roll added, I think it should be where if you are running to a fence or something about waist high, instead of slowly scissoring it, you "barrel roll" over it. Put your chest on the fence and "flop" over it, landing on your back, then rolling to the normal prone position.

if a real soldier did that they would break their back or break some ribs.. the way it is already done in ArmA 2 is the proper way to do it

Hmm, I guess so. But I'm sure there would be a way to prevent any accidental rib breakage. Perhaps if you continued rolling? Put in enough barrel rolls there to expend the energy of the fall? Or maybe if you were carrying light enough gear? Mind you I'm not talking about chest high fences or anything, just knee to waist maybe. I've never been in full combat gear before though, so I wouldn't know.

Personally, i would like some sort of "Evasive manuver" sort of action.

We've all been in that situation where you ready your AT, at the exact moment a AI pops round that corner. All you can do is sit there waiting for the animation to finish and hope. Or just in a fire fight when you just need that extra bit of speed to hit the dirt.

All im suggesting is something like pressing shift Z would mean you would

Dive/falling with style, to the dirt in the direction your facing

Interupts any animation your currently in

The screen literary "hits the dirt" (mud on screen, large shaking)

Takes a bit of time and stamina(to avoid abuse) to actualy be able to do anything (second or so to pick up rifle, etc)

Im not talking anything hollywood, just a something to get in cover quickly.

full combat gear is pretty heavy i have used it.. if you did any kind of dive in the body armour you would do some damage but the special forces are trained how to avoid it.
