Well to be fair that is how RPGs are supposed to play. Luck and character skill/ability combined. The more skilled you are, the less luck you need :) as I said, it takes a gameplay adjustment to enjoy it.

And this is exactly why I hate classic RPGs, yet I can enjoy a game like Skyrim. It has just enough player-based skill and participation to make it interesting.

From a marketing perspective, I believe that Bethesda has made a shrewd move in combining aspects of classic RPG with action-based gameplay: It definitely broadens their audience.

Hullo there,

Practice? Excellent stuff! I had no idea servers like that existed.

I'm still confused as to how RUSH mode works so that will help me immensely.

Also, Just unlocked my second IRNV sight. Amazing things, but do they make things too simple?

Im happy with my acog on PP2000 or M16a4 most of the time.

MW3 cost: $60 + $15/map pack

Lifetime: 12 months until the next CoD comes out

ArmA X cost: $56.72 + $0/addon

Lifetime: 10 years and counting

:yay:

Is it just me, or are some rush servers completely unplayable because most of the defending team are either sniper/MG camping or saturating the area around the target thingys with mortars?

Call it a lack of imagination, but I can't think of a way to counter such a "strategy". Even if you learn the location of some of the campers and manage to take them out, you can be sure that another one already has you in his crosshairs.

Btw. the most hilarious weapon I've seen is a suppressed SAW with IR sight. People camping with that weapon tend to have the highest kill count and lowest death count in any match. Talk about balance...

counter mortar fire is how i deal with mortars+ campers

enemy mortars show up on your map when they fire, take those out and any campers you spot, be sure to move before the mortar guys respawn

works best when you have 2-3 people doing it

Or... your character is retarded :) Think about the many people you know IRL who would be useless at sneaking up behind someone.

Well to be fair that is how RPGs are supposed to play. Luck and character skill/ability combined.

Yea but it can be handled in a different way that actually gives the player some control. A little more budget on the animations so you at least see it being dodged/deflected. Why do RPGs not bother animating things that simpler arcade games do?

If it hits them visually, then it should mean that you actually hit them. Just have it deal less damage.

It should rather be:

The more skilled you are, the less time and effort you need :)

Luck is for board games and gambling, not big budget video games. So much advancement in graphics should come with advancement in gameplay.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not totally hating on the game. I just think this could have been done in a better way that would make combat more enjoyable.

How similar is this to BF1942? No, I'm not kidding.

And then imagine what BIS could do if they had Infinity Ward's budget...

Anyway, my point is that BIS doesn't rip you off with overpriced games that are worthless in a year. My brother tried to trade Black Ops in for Modern Warfare 3 and they laughed in his face. Call of Duty games are like Paris fashions - they only last a year until the next line is released.

Meanwhile, BIS doesn't charge an arm and a leg and creates a game that actually gets better with time.

Hunt the sniper, hunt the sniper.

Balance is not a word that can be applied to this game but yes there are too many snipers & scopes.

I know 3 people who have this game (real people, not internetz people) one has the PC version the other two have the PS3 version.

They are all sniping.

Noobs...

Nothing wrong with sniping, just so long as you're being useful in that position.

I don't have BF3 but in BF2142 I play either Recon or Engineer.

- Sneaking past enemy lines and setting up a spawn point as Squad leader.

- Blowing up commander assets keeping him blind and obsessed with dealing with me

instead of paying attention to the battlefield.

- Clearing motion mines and APM's for vehicles and infrantry.

- Spotting

- Acting as bait to keep enemies distracted or firing to give their positions away

In both roles It's not uncommon for me to get next to no kills simply because

doing the above things was more import.

Maybe set up a server with reserved slots for Arma players who don't give a hoot about K/D ratios and scores.

I haven't looked at my final score in Battlefield in years.

Thats why i only buy CoD every two years, because thats actually how long it lasts on its own.

I cant think of a single rpg game that had a good combat system, they were always stat based on rolls and crit and bunch of other percentage stackers.

maybe the RPG devs should look into fighting games for better combat system implementation?

IMHO, RPGs should stay like that, as there is no way to realisticly depict progress of a character in such a game, without the statistics.

Hmm, well, no :) if I might politely try to explain... it's an RPG game, and that's what RPG games do, they roll the dice in response to your (the player) request. Advancement in gameplay in this instance means changing the gameplay... away from RPG, which would be the wrong thing to do.

Think of it in terms of ArmA, how the core of the game differs from other FPS shooters, and your reaction to changing the gameplay to be more "big budget video game" ;) it's simply how that style of game works, and in fact even the first person viewpoint is somewhat of a diversion from the gameplay paradigm, it used to be a 3rd person orthographic game originally I believe. The first-person viewpoint enables a more immersive gameplay, but it also generates an expectation in players that they should control the character's skill, instead of being subject to the character's skill.

It's a halfway house, and not a bad one at that. You just got to play the game with that in mind :) all said & done, I'm having quite a good time of it so far in Skyrim. I caught a couple of illnesses yesterday in the game that caused me to go into parts of the gameplay that I normally wouldn't :)

That's RPG for you, that's what it does. The most appropriate ingame mechanism would be to animate the fighting better based on the calculated outcome, but to give the player absolute control of the combat itself, is another game style and not an RPG.

Quite loving Skyrim, put over 30 hours in that beast already over the weekend, money's worth! :)

Re the fighting system, I too was a little put off by it, but this is mostly because The Witcher 2 has spoiled me in this area, and i've come to terms already with it.

@MaddMatt & Igneous01; If you like a good fighting system, grab the Witcher 2 (grab patch 2.0!), you need to learn some skills to get to the really great fighting...

Fighting is btw not the only great part about that game, I would give it a 9.8 rating (1-10).

Sure sleep (but not too much!), it's rather some of the other things I ignore sometimes :P

And of course 11-11-11 was day-off-work, play from early morning to late night :D

'Course he sleeps. Whenever he finds an abandoned bandit bedroll he sleeps.
Haha :D Actually, now you mention it, I haven't actually touched any beds in game just yet.... "You sleep enough once you're dead" :P

:)

I did try sleeping, just to see if there were any positive effects. Turns out it's a waste of time :D

BTW, anyone know where I can get some good archery practice? I found one archery target but it was stored away in a tower, I remember Oblivion had some active ranges to use but I haven't found any in Skyrim yet.

Apparently they're thinking about adding a counter measure against mortars. Not sure I like their choice though.

hello there

Sleeping/resting is a nice way to get your hp/mana back to full quickly. The enemy distance/safe to sleep measurement isnt too high. Bit of an exploit tho.

There is sort of one at dragonsreach, just go up the stairs behind the throneroom and out the door, there are two targets right and left, sometimes an archer practices on the right with steel arrows, good way to make money if you dont mind waiting :p

Some bugs I've come across so far.
