MultiDiscussion : TES5: Skyrim, BattleField 3, COD, R6 etc.

It's one of the great misconceptions about ES combat, that combat is inaccurate somehow. In fact it's not player-skill based but character-skill based. So when you swing a sword, you initiate an onscreen animation of the sword swing, but the actual combat effect itself is calculated from the various RPG factors, like your character's abilities, your opponent's abilities, your weapon's state etc.

Think of it as rolling dice rather than physics based.

Once you fully realise this, it's possible to relax a little and play it more RPG-like :)

.

This is exactly right. Although a highly immersive world, I really had to fight the urge to just quit it early on as I'm just expecting oh so much more out of the fight engine. Had to finally make the mental adjustment, and now I'm having fun.

Tho how stellar would this series be if it offered up a directional based attack/block system as well as accurate movement physics effecting damage modifiers :p

I have to wait until mods are released that take away the console menues and other helpers. I havent played it yet but from previews I really dont like that 3d map, I prefer a "dumb" map without any help (guess I have to print one out on paper and disable it ingame..

The game itself is great but as others have said the UI with mouse and keyboard is terrible, the annoying thing is Pete Hines (VP of Marketing for Bethesda) is quoted on Joystiq a couple of days ago, first complaining about how difficult it is to dev for the pc, but also saying "so the core experience is the same on all platforms, and we try to do some things with the UI for PC folks to have the best experience possible." WTF? I am not have the 'best experience possible' by any shot.

Compass and Quest markers can be disabled in the ini also. There are also options there to turn on tree and world shadows. Much better without the compass/markers/crosshair -tho Ive heard disabling quest marker may kill your Achievements if you care (I don't).

Ah yes, thanks for the tip. For those who wish to do the same, it's under Documents/My Games/Skyrim/SkyrimPrefs.ini and the setting is called "bShowCompass".

I really miss hardcore mode from Fallout: New Vegas. It gives food and sleep a sense of purpose other then a mere gimmick. I hope someone will come up with a good mod for this.

One more thing, has anyone found ways to see what guilds you are in? Like Oblivion that is. It's just now, after 17 hours, that I found out my character had Brainrot and Rockjoint (it was under spells, 'P', apparently). If it's anything I would want to change it's the interface.

Hmm, AFAIk, you can disable the menu/HUD in the options.

Anyone been to the Academy of Winterfeste (German version, doh). Feels like Hogwarts :p

aka College of Winterhold :)

And no not yet.

Since its a console port and I am playing on pc, I decided to use my 360 control, no complaints on it so far, and I've been playing since the morrowind days. :p

Steam Statistics show that 231.000 people played the game at the same time on release day (only on steam).

Cod was only played by by 75000 in MP and 45000 in SP at the same time.

Could this game be played ok on console? or is it best on PC.... just looking for a game for my PS3, this looks cool, never played the others or similar RPGs except for a bit of Fall Out 3... until i lost my dog!

As modding is a large part of TES games (And in some cases even needed) i would hightly recommend you to get the PC version, even though the consolized menu feels retarded to use on a PC. Really Bethesda? You make me navigate menus using the WASD keys?

I know how it works and what it's supposed to simulate...

But in the end when you stand there and see your character repeatedly swing the sword at an enemy and nothing happens, it's frustrating and looks stupid.

If you cannot hit someone from behind when they can't see you, you are retarded :p

Nobody can be as useless with a sword or knife as your starting character in Morrowind, who can't even land a strike on an old woman from behind with a knife.

Dice rolls are for board games. I expect better from a big budget video game than having your characters fate based on total random luck.

One bug I've discovered twice now is when speaking to people who are important to the quest line i.e the sister of the stormcloak at riverwood and the greybeard at high hrothgar, when going through every dialog with them I cannot exit from speaking, it seems to just disable the key to exit, nor can you escape from the game with any other means then stopping the process with task manager... kinda sucks if you haven't saved in a while..

Morrowind is the game that made me make a new save every 30 minutes, and quicksave about every 30 seconds. Its a habit that continued into Oblivion and still proves useful in Skyrim. :p

Anyone else encountered that Ice/Frost Troll on the way up to the Greybeards? At level 8 and with Lydia by my side it was still a huge struggle with me sprinting around trying to avoid the damn thing while she shot at it with her bow. I only did a powerattack on it if i felt it was safe, which was basically never. :p

I had less trouble killing a dragon, though i had gained 2 or 3 levels by then.

@NeMeSiS

I used my nords special ability of battle cry and the troll ran, this was after I sneak attacked it twice with my orcish bow, after he ran I chased after him and sliced him up twice with my sword and axe, he fell after two strokes :D

Hello all

As the the game being realistic..... ummm no.

it does nod to realism more than other similar games but dont expect Arma levels(!?) of realism.

(surely sim should replace the realism moniker?)

Ive confused myslef.

Anyhoo, if you are new to BF3 and havnt played its like before, it can be quite daunting. There's no tutorial whatsoever and at first you will be lost and scared and often killed.

Perservere though, and its a fun little thing.

As Pufu stated, there is no offline mode and SP is an entirely different beast to MP, one really cant compare the two.

rgds

LoK

This is my position, never played anything BF in my life, it is daunting at first (and still is), realistic ? I hope not.

I've found a little trick to ease people into the game without too much pain...

In the server filter, there is a field in which to type a server name : type "practice" and hit the refresh and save filter button...

Bobs your uncle :).

Everybody is learning to fly/tank and shoot and I've been helped and advised by people who know the game and the ins & outs.

I was pleasantly surprised by the welcome, something I was not expecting from a 3xA mega game EA Sports thing...

There is hope for mankind yet...

Good game.

Happens to me too, but I am still able to click on the "TAB - Exit" 'hint' button in the bottom right corner of the screen to exit the dialogue.

Or... your character is retarded :) Think about the many people you know IRL who would be useless at sneaking up behind someone.

Well to be fair that is how RPGs are supposed to play. Luck and character skill/ability combined. The more skilled you are, the less luck you need :) as I said, it takes a gameplay adjustment to enjoy it.

There is some amount of slight nerfing of this notion however: the lockpicking mini-game for example. Although I heavily suspect the player skill to augment the character skill there not totally replace it.

Hello,

Gotta agree with DMarkwick on the fact that RPG's are (or should be stat based) in combat.

I understand too, that swinging the sword in game and seeing it hit with no result is a tad confusing but an understandable limitation.

Pretend it bounced of the opponents armour.

What I find odd, is the way Skyrim is trying to be two things at once.

a) Console adventure

b) old school RPG

Too many people feel short-changed when a game doesn't live up to their expectations and almost take it as a personal slight.

Just remember, its a money driven industry and ones personal enjoyment i'snt as high on the list as the masses enjoyment.

I'd personally prefer it if there was one game for the players who just want a roller-coaster thrill a minute dragon stomping adventure and one game for the RPG beardy folk.

In my world there'd be no crossover in the platforms.

Leave consoles to what they do best and leave PC's to what they do best.

They're both great platforms but (especially "input wise" worlds apart (for the main))

I'm still enjoying the game though and am deliberately avoiding the main plot for the moment to see what else is out there.

I must admit, I'm fairly underwhelemed by the two times ive see a dragon. Smaug they are not in they're scaryness.

Rgds

LoK

PS

ooo another thing, I wish it was a little more roguelike in identifying of items. I seem to know instinctivley what an item is and all about it, where's the mystery?

Eh, I'd personally rather not pretend one thing while something totally different happened.

So this is still the case in Skyrim?

This would be a total no go immersion breaker for me

No, thats gone since Oblivion. However the damage is only done at the point of the crosshair, not anywhere your blade swings like in, for example, Mount&Blade. Damage itself is still pretty much statbased.

Well I think I will play as mage when I get the game (First I´ll wait for some Patches and I want to see what kind of DLC strategy the Developer is aiming at)

Does Mana regenerate itself over time or do you have to drink some poisons to get it up again?

You can do both. You also have enchanted items, such as clothes, that can improve your recharge speed or the overall amount of mana.
