USSOCOM dropped to purchase SCAR Mk16

Recommended Posts

Here is news

http://kitup.military.com/2010/06/socom-cancels-mk-16-scar.html

“The Mk-16 does not provide enough of a performance advantage over the M-4 to justify spending USSOCOM’s limited … funds when competing priorities are taken into consideration,†officials at USSOCOM said in an email response to questions from Military.com. “Currently, three of USSOCOM’s four components receive the 5.56 mm M-4 from their parent service as a service common equipment item.â€

The news also says that they have to return all Mk16 to armory and pick up their old M4s or HK416s....

But USSOCOM will purchase Mk17 (SCAR H) anyway. I wonder this situation would change unit's gear in next patch?:p

We may need HK416 and M4 with many options. :yay:

M4s and HK416s for US Army units...is needed.

Not only SF(SEAL) was testing Mk16 but 75th Rangers was also testing this weapon, for it is a part of USSOCOM.:D

US Army units in OA must be 75th Rangers, then.

But they aren't... 75th have more high speed gear... As seen on first OA ss's, units in OA were based on 82nd I guess...

Listen guys. This is an alternate timeline. In OA, the decided to purchase that weapon for the mainstream infantry. Get used to it!

This. ArmA 2/OA events != RL events, therefore this discussion = absolutely pointless (besides redundant as this is at least the third thread about it).

There have already been discussions over this issue. I'm pretty sure that BIS knows that the US Army scrapped it, but by June 25th time they had most likely completed the development as only 4 days later was the release date. They probably didn't want to delay it.

In any case, if you think the loadouts are wrong, you can just change them with a simple script... In fact, I would rarely make missions without scripts replacing equipment on all playable units and sometimes on enemy units as well when their gear doesn't fit my intentions for the missions.

You got it right. But instead of using scripts, I'm testing RH(Robert Hammer) weapons series to find the best one for US army units...lol. I could make some US Army unit mod with RH M4/HK416 series..BTW if BI can cover this with their patches, it could be better.:bounce3:

Does this mean the US Armed Forces might be switching up their main caliber?

No. This is for Special Forces only. SF has always used a variety of weapons, including customized weapons.

Not any time soon. I wouldn't be surprised if they switch to an intermediate caliber in ten years at the most, but it is a HUGE logistical issue, not just for USA, but for entire NATO, so it is a difficult change to make.

Even if just refitting current M4s it leaves the USMC to need a change too (I think the intermediate rounds looked at are as little designed for a full-length M16 as the military's 5.56mm is designed for a short weapon as a M4?).

The 5.56mm doesn't pack a lot of a punch. It tumbles badly from almost nothing at all, lacks performance at distances that an avarage rifleman can reach out to nowadays thanks to ACOGs and alike, but... it is a very light round and it allows soldiers to carry around a lot of ammunition. The 7.62x51mm is twice as heavy (if I don't recall wrong) and twice as big making it hard to carry around much of it, greatly reducing a troop's capability for fire volume, even if they now carry a high performance round.

Intermediate rounds like 6.5mm Grendel or 6.8mm SPC offers some middle ground, but I'm unsure if it'll hit the rank n' file troops anytime soon to any noteworthy extent.

I'm sick of using the M4/M16 in every F'ing game, I have no problem with the Rangers & Delta using the SCAR, I think some of you guys forget that ARMA is a game so they (BI) have the freedom to follow or to ignore RL-events.

do people not think that there is 100's of SCAR-L's in stock in the US? they wont just be left in an armoury, they will be used

so the Us in oa using them isnt unreal

theyre M4's in game already so whats the bigdeal? learn the addweapon script ;)

You can also forget the US ever adopting the 416. That will not happen.

The USMC has already adopted a variant of the 416 as the M27 (4,100 units), supposedly to replace M249s. (though most people seem to think it's just an excuse not to go through the bullshit of trying to get it as a replacement for the M4!)

Proof.

I wouldn't take the SCAR off the table for now, remeber how many times the osprey project got cancelled?

I meant as a replacement to the M4 it won't happen. 4,000 units is about <1% of what they'd have to replace. SCAR too for that matter on that scale.

But actually, what I beleive happened with the scar that confused people in the original posting is that SOCOM just moved the responsibility for purchasing the SCAR from itself to its served entities. Which is how the requisition should be/is handled for line kit. In fact I believe it means they are still evaluating the Mk17 but the Mk16 has passed its evals.

Having passed all requirements and now is out of the hands of socom and into the hands of the regular requisition orgs.

Sorry but WHY is this thread still open?

1. There were already a few threads discussing this that were moved to the Military Discussion thread in OT.

2. There is no actual suggestion here, and nothing that belongs in the Suggestions section.

Mods, is there some other reason for leaving this open?
