Dutch marines capture somali pirates

Recommended Posts

For those who might worry, there isnt anybody being killed or injured in the video, after the pirates got sufficiently scared by all the gunfire being poured onto them they all surrendered.

It's some cool footage to see, especially since i'm Dutch :)

What is the rationale behind helmet cams, anyway? PR? AAR? Seems like a lot of trouble and weight on an already heavy piece of equipment.

used for future training or even debriefing a mission. no exuses or bullshit with a camera and you will be court marshalled for those innocents you wiped out and forgot to mention

How do you know how much it weighs? It could be very light and unnoticeable for all we know. It's a very good tool for monitoring, debriefing and accurate recording of what actually went on.

I have to admit after watching that clip it really does show how accurate they are in a sense of riding the sholder of the soldier. As i said before no doubt that in a few years boot camps will be filled with projector screens and video demonstrations rather than an officer teaching the theory from a book.

However those somalian pirates really are mean little bastards. Its about time they got whats coming to them, a bit like those pirates last year that put a capital S on stupidity by raiding a boat that just happened to be a fully armed navy vessel with over 2000 sailors, marines and badasses that welcomed them on board with a beating and an immediate tour of the brig.

After Action Review and training, that this got released for positive PR through the decision of the Navy brass is just a bonus due to equipment that they need to have on them anyway, MARSOF certainly wouldn't consider carrying additional equipment just to inform/impress outsiders.

And considering they are used to carrying upwards of 80pds of equipment with them, I doubt a few pounds more or less would matter anyway. They're not carrying that much for this kind of operation.

There have been several incidents where pirates have attacked navy vessels, or even tried to board them, increasingly so for the last 6 months. Hr Ms Tromp (a destroyer), which these SF operators were based on also got fired upon when they tried to get the pirates to surrender. This was a mistake, because if they hadn't fired on them, I doubt MARSOF would have been allowed to board the vessel.

Awesome clip, thx for sharing!

Suddenly i would love to have real hearing ai in ArmA! Imagine shouting in your mic and the ai´s getting more & more shaken depending on what you shout, if it understands your language, and how agressive your voice sounds :D

That's a very impressive clip. Seemed like a textbook operation executed very well. I have a new-found respect for the Dutch Marines. :D

Gotta love how the pirates had to act all tough against the poor, unarmed crew of that ship, and did absolutely nothing when they were stormed by someone their own size.

Kind of reminds me of the tanker mission in R6RS, just a lots less shooting and no blood at all

This Operation went really good.

BTW, what kind of helicopter did they use?

I think that the marines should be posted on random civil ships in high attack areas. I am not sure if they are already doing this and i can appreciate that most are fighting in iraq or afghanistan, however there are a lot of other european countries that are not involved with the middle east that could spare the men. i think it would make all the crew feel a bit safer when travelling out, it would deffinatly make these bastards think twice, especially if they get blown out of the water before they even get to board.

@ Archamedes, no they don´t do that, don´t ask me why. Maybe they don´t have enough men for that. In Fact they advise the Crews to not fight against the Pirates, so that nobody gets hurt....

EDIT: Thanks for the subtitels^^

From my understanding of the situation that is not practical . There are too many ships that travel in that area. It would cost a lot to have to keep flying marines from one ship to the next everytime one got into the area.

Convoys are the solution, unfortunately in today's world, a delay of a day or two costs too much money, so a lot of captains are forced by the shipping firms to sail outside of convoys.

logistics is my major and yeah i understand cost a lot.. but its almost bit "funny" how in the modern world we know where the pirates are, we know how to avoid them.. but that 3 week shipping can't take another day longer or it will increase costs too much.

Good work on the dutch soldiers..

I can only assume there is a limited amount of pirates (i realise a good thing catches on) so after a while when a lot are either arrested or dead the rest may give up. I am probably completely wrong and ignorant to the fact there could potentially be millions of them but hey i guess its an optomistic thought
