Question about performance in demo vs full version

Recommended Posts

1. how good is performance, in particular on a Gtx280 in Sli, and I7 940, with settings maxed.

2. How are bugs being handled and fixed.

3. How good is the AI?

1. Okayish. In CPU heavy missions (Think hundreds of AI fighting at the same time) your FPS wont be awesome, but thats because they havent made the PC that can handle such things yet. The default campaign/MP will run fine though.

2. Good, currently patched to 1.05 and there have been dozens of betapatches released so far, BI takes care of their games.

3. Good, they may not always look very convincing but you have to consider that they are operating in a completely dynamic enviroment and considering that and the scale they are pretty impressive. Far from perfect though.

1. it will be less than other games you are used to. But a constant 40FPS in ArmA2 is very playable environment. 8/10

2. Great! BIS has been working together with the community to get rid of the bugs. The CIT is the living example of it, as well as the numerous beta patches released, and BI developers activity on those forums. 9/10

3. With 1.05, better than before. They still surprise me from time to time, even though i have been playing BIS games for almost 10 years. 8/10

1) I depends on how "maxed" you consider things being "maxed". On its top most user settings (everything set to very high, 10km view distance, superwide screen and 200% 3D resolution etc...) I believe Arma 2 can make any rig crawl and beg for mercy and will continue to do so for the next couple of years. You can even push the game further by hand tweaking the config files... So in a sense, "Max" is when your computer cannot handle it anymore in this game...

The game runs fine on most rigs, but occasionally doesn't like a specific set of components and some ultra-high rigs, while it flies on lower-machines... There are bottlenecks we are not always aware of...

If you plan to build a monster PC for Arma 2, get rid of a card and get a SSD disk instead. Arma 2 uses a streaming technology that can benefit A LOT from it.

In any case, get the DEMO to see it for yourself. Bear in mind it's not the most up to date (1.02, while the game is now 1.05 with improved AI and performance for instance) but it will give you an idea.

I don't know about SLI, but a single 280 should give you a nice and steady FPS to play with with very high settings. But it will not be as frantic (120 FPS) as others games because we are dealing with over 220 square kilometers of terrain and over a million objects and hundreds of AI...

The campaign is quite a powerhog at times but the editor and single missions give you supersmooth gameplay most of the time.

2) Bugs : the support of BIS is unparalleled... they listen, take note and deliver new patches on a regular basis, even though perfection is still a long way for such a complex game (always a thing to tweak).

3) AI : it is simply the BEST non-scripted AI on the market. Not perfect, sometimes retards, but STILL THE BEST by a long range when you consider the amount of things it does without pre-placed cover system, respawn point and scripted actions.

1 - You will max it out with good frames but don´t expect 60-100 fps. 30 Fps for this game is good enough. Don´t expect too to set vision distance to 10Km and 3D resolution to 200%

2 - With last pach 1.05 few bugs remains, don´t recommend the main campaign, it´s full of scripts errors, this game is form MP, COOP, tons of mods and the Editor.

3 - It´s not perfect, but i dare someone post me other game that has a better AI than this one, i love them, with ACE or GL4 mods it makes even better!

It is only a game. You won't have to sell your kids to buy it.

There have been so may threads like this on the forum, why can't people search?

There is a demo, try it.

That isn't armas fault, that's bad mission making.. Dynamic spawn ftw!

Well, my CPU is well above the minumum but i still cant be too picky about my FPS in Manhattan or that campaign mission where you assault the city. Its playable, but i do feel that my FPS is quite low.

And i dont even see that many AI units in those missions. :p

(I dont have a FPS meter anymore, i want to play the game instead of worrying about my FPS and turning the damn thing off works. ;) )

1. You should get about 60 FPS, which for this game is excellent.

2. The bugs are definitely there, but in six months BIS has come out with 5 different patches. They are making steady progress in fixing them, and doing a very good job. You have to consider how ambitious this game is.

3. The AI gets the job done, and the patches are continually making the AI better.

Buy the game. You will not be disappointed.

Hi all,

I'm trying to find out if there has been much of a performance improvement from the demo to the latest version. The demo ran ok (not sure of the frames, I should check) but it felt like more were needed to smooth things a bit.

My hardware, should it matter, is: i7 920 (can OC to 3.8Ghz if it helps), 6GB DDR3, ATI 5770 1GB (this can was temporary until the new nvidia range appears). Resolution: 1680x1050.

Should I assume that the demo performance is what I'll get from the game, or has there been optimisation?

Thanks.

Since 1.05, has been optimized (mlods switching faster, general improvements especially in big towns...) it's quiet smooth now.

you should be ok, you will find your balance, IQ to performance.

No. The game is much better. They should release a new DEMO, bet they will with OA.

The performance in 1.05 is better and more consistent. And if you have such a system I'm sure you can spend 15 euro's to get the full version from play.com

Is this so? I tried the demo yesterday, am getting roughly 15 fps on my old Alienware P4.

The original Arma runs at about 30 fps. Will the 1.05 version get close to that in fps?

@Seirrah80

Your rig is very similar to mine and it runs ArmA 2 without any problems with current settings:

I doubt it will, ArmA 2 will eat your rig as a snack :)

Have to say I like the game, combines some strategy with first person shooter.. But before I buy, I just have a few questions if someone would be so kind to try and answer.. screenshots always help..

1. Does your profile actually keep track of stats? Kills, etc..

2. What actually shows up under the Armory? Weapons you purchased? Is that the only means of getting newer weapons, equipment? or do you earn them for completing achievements of some sort.

3. Demo is a little buggy, assuming the patches have fixed a ton? Even the basic training missions were bugged?

4. Multiplayer seems a little dead? normal or just because demo only has access to play with other newbies?

5.Sorta a follow up to question 1, after missions is there a summary of some sort? all I saw was list of objectives completed.

6. I do like playing certain aspects of the game with a gamepad such as driving. I tested with the xbox controller.. The demo didnt let me customize, is that true of the real game?

I have more, but will start with these.. thanks all for any sort of response...

1. No and thank god for that(else it would turn into a COD/BF score race)

2. Dunno never tried the armory thing(you can use the editor and easily try all weapons and vehicles)

3. Yes patches has fixed a lot also performance has increased

4. I have no problems finding a populated server here in europe

5. Yes you see a list with kill types and numbers, numbers of deaths etc.

6. Dunno but i think i've read about people using controllers

2. What actually shows up under the Armory? Weapons you purchased? Is that the only means of getting newer weapons, equipment? or do you earn them for completing achievements of some sort.

The Armory just lets you play with guns and vehicles. If you complete missions in the armory, then you get access to more stuff to play with in the Armory. The Armory does not affect SP pr MP gameplay. In both SP and MP missions, you can choose weapons out of whatever pool the mission design thought was appropriate.

3. Demo is a little buggy, assuming the patches have fixed a ton? Even the basic training missions were bugged?

Patches have fixed a lot of the bugs, and BIS has a good record of supporting its games with patches. The original OFP was released in 2001, and BIS was actively fixing and adding to it until 2004.

4. Multiplayer seems a little dead? normal or just because demo only has access to play with other newbies?

Usually it's better if you join a clan or something like that. I don't play much MP, there's basically an infinite amount of stuff you can do in the editor, especially since lots of addons are being released.

5.Sorta a follow up to question 1, after missions is there a summary of some sort? all I saw was list of objectives completed.

After SP missions? Sure, you can get a list of what units you killed/destroyed. You could track more info if you wanted to, but the mission designer would have to handle that.

Hello and welcome.

First of all, free your mind of all BF/CoD leftovers. ArmA 2 works completely different. Although there are a few missions which have stats, in general you don't have such a thing in ArmA 2.

In this game, the main reason to play is to accomplish a mission, not to lead a ranking of any sort. Therefor, your ingame profile will never hold any info about kills.

A lot of us are quite happy to finish a mission without a kill if we could help to accomplish by doing air taxi service from start/spawn point to the frontline or other sort of support.

Will not mean you are forced to do that, just as an example that mission goal goes before kill stats.

In the armory you can watch and try all content from ArmA 2, be it default BIS stuff or addons you've installed. You can get familiar with all equipement. Some things are locked at the beginning but you can unlock them by winning missions. You can't purchase weapons, at least in most missions. There are some which have a "buy weapon" function in it, most popular the Warfare missions. But it's not like buying a weapon in mission XY and then you can have it in mission TZ also.

Each mission has it's own setup and only mission designer does decide what weaponry you can access and where.

Maybe at first you think this is lame but at the end it is a matter of mission balancing. Imagine your mission is to kill a unit standing in the middle of a field. With a sniper rifle it would be way too easy....but not if you only have a pistol. The mission makers will decide what weapons are present to keep the mission balanced...not too easy but not impossible either.

Demo is buggy but fullgame has received a few patches already. I wouldn't call it bugfree yet but at least there are no showstoppers left and the game is well playable.

About multiplayer...hmm...ok...if you compare to CS:S or BF:BC or CoD i have to agree. The online community is, compared to other popular games, not so big.

Mostly i think this is because ArmA 2 has no ranking/awarding system with which some define how 1337 they are. The ArmA 2 community is more mature. We can stand back and live with less kills than others if it helps to accomplish the mission as good as ever possible. There is much less competition between players, also a reason why coop games are much more popular than TvT or even PvP gametypes. Although they exist and surely have theyr players all the time.

There is a summary which include a kill statistic...IIRC at the end scrren at bottom right is a icon to switch displayed site. On page 2 you should find your statistics.

About the Gamepad...i'm sorry, i don't own one but i "guess" that you should be able to assign buttons without problems.

1) I´ve a feeling the counter on some of our killstats would´ve gone over 999999 and reverted back to 0 by now :D

6) xbox360 pad working perfectly fine here. I only use it for flying though.
