RKSL - British Army Lynx AH Pack for ArmA2 Released

Recommended Posts

Another great helo from RKSL! Is it normal to not hear any engine noise when in 1st person view inside the helo? I get the same thing with the RKSL Pumas as well but not the Chinook?

Yes its normal for this version of the Lynx and Puma, but it has been fixed in the new version due next week.

Hey Rock, any updates for us eager fans?

Yes, not long now. I just need to sort a couple of last minute issues. I'm waiting to hear back from the Lynx expert and add a few small tweaks and it should be live. Same for the Pumas....

Sadly you are going to have to wait for the new Lynx models for an SH-14D. That was a crude demo model converted from an RN HAS3.

All the Lynx series is being rebuilt, mainly for technical reasons but they should be better quality, have better features and a few new bits.

Damn you found it! It only took 6 months...

Seriously the internal sound issue has been done to death. Its fixed in the next version.

For those that have felt the need to whine (incessantly) in the past (and know fuck all about real world avaition). Think about this: Helicopter aircrew wear noise cancelling headsets. These take the ambient noise and invert it, then play the inverse back into the headset. Effectively cancelling the interior noise of the helicopter making communication possible. This is why it was done. It was deliberate.

I know this from my own personal experience of flying around in both civil and military helicopters, not to mention my measly 21 hours of Rotary Wing Training. My own cheap headset filters out about 95% of the ambient noise from the R22 I take lessons in. This is the idea behind the quiet cabin in both the Lynx and Puma. Its realistic. People asked for realism... now they want arcade. PFFT!

But it has the much reported affect of only turning down the helicopter itself, and not nearby gunfire, birds, etc. which blows the immersion. It also has the same effect on headset-less passengers who are expecting to climb into a seriously loud airframe.

Isn't a better option just to tweak your in game sound effects level?

Isn't a better option just to tweak your in game sound effects level?

Out of the 80+ people that voted during the beta trial (that is 3 gaming groups) over 85% voted for the reduction of the internal sound effects. All for varying reasons:

It makes on the fly briefings easier
I spend hours flying and im worried about my hearing being damaged from the white noise
It just makes the entire business of comms so much easier
If i trying adjusting my settings ingame i CTD. Lower the internal effects please
Im already partially deaf i dont need to be finished off by a game. lower the volume please
+1 no internal noise - comms is better without it
I've flown helicopters for years its not realisitic. I say mute them

I could go on if you like.

But the whiners have won. I've returned the internal noise on the public versions back to the BIS default. Those that want the proper versions PM me when the new versions are out and i'll give you the real config patch.

Comon now, wasnt whining, honest...

And i didnt know about the 6months testing period..

Havent been able to play properly until last 2-3 months

anyway...So been out of the loop...

I do know however that it will be fixed..Cause you do that..

Im looking forward to the info about the island too, mighty nice sofar...

PS: Keep the "No internal noise" please.. I too fly alot and

i tend to get abit cottony? (spell) in the head after awhile..

Cottony, like having cotton wraped around my brain..

Rock, is there no chance of utilising the userconfig folder? Having a RKSL folder with global config or something for "Realism Mode - 1 or 0" to enable this stuff? More a huge config change to service both parties? :)

For me the sound issue is LOGICAL but not practical within arma as people play the game for immersion. But I would still like the option to have it on or off, cause it definitly helps communications via TS2/3 compared to the "I CANT HEAR YOU IM FLYING A HELICOPTER" that I'm found screaming down the mic.

Regardless, good work so far and I look forward to the release!

To be perfectly honest I'm starting to lean towards the "if you don't like it, Tough shit" approach. :p Its either that of the addons stay restricted to our friends.

Now there are lots of people that don't comment or email abuse/whine via pm etc that would lose out. I'm really not happy about that but I'm sick to death of whiney children bullshitting trying to tell me what is "real". Especially when you discover their only experience is from watching TV shows and playing games.

RE the user config folder: Technically I honestly don't know. I've not really looked into that aspect. I am unsure what the MP implications would be or how to go about doing it. UNN is rather busy right now and I'm really limited on time myself, so we don't really have chance to develop a more complicated solution. So we're left looking at 3 options:

  1. Take what you are given
  2. Keep whining and lose out :D
  3. A dual system details to be decided/discovered.

Options 1 or 2 is looking favourite right now. Personally my friends and I will use the "as designed" solution. If others want something else they could always make their own addons. (that would be novel wouldn't it)

I'm waiting to see what the testers say to the latest version before deciding. Either way its going to be quieter inside than the BIS helos. I value my hearing too much.

Not that i know off, but its worthy of investigation.

I doubt it but you never know.

Your Momma is a wise woman.

---------------------------------

Just for clarity. So you know exactly where i am coming from and who is giving me advice:

My intent with all the RKSL addons is to create the most accurate, realistic models and features i can within the ArmA2 engine limits. This aim is driven by the people i play with. Most are either ex or serving military who want the same degree of realism as i do.

If you dont like these addons as they are then please dont use them.

Just so you know who the people i am taking advice from are:

- Mark P - British Army Air Corps - A current Lynx Pilot

- Andy J - Designer at Westland's for 20+ years. He designed quite a few parts on the Lynx upgrades as well as on the Merlins.

- Olly C - A British Army Air Corps maintainer working on the Lynx.

- Andrew P - ex-US Army who has flown the Lynx on exchange as well as a number of other combat helicopters

- Chas W - ex Royal Marines and a former Lynx door gunner

- Ian - Lt Cmdr, Royal Navy with 9 years on the Lynx and other types.

- Stu R - Serving RAF Pilot in training

- Chris B - Serving French Puma Aircrew

- "Big" Dave - Serving RAF Chinook Aircrew

- Poll - Serving RAF Merlin Aircrew

- Smudge - Serving RAF Regiment JTAC

All of these guys are bonefide 100% none bullshitters. Ive met several of the AAC guys and they even hosted me at the base to see the actual aircraft. Others i know from work or are friends of mine. If these guys tell me something is realistic I believe them. I don't listen to 15 year old boys who once saw a helicopter on a school trip.

PS: And "Little" Dave - Serving Captain Royal Artillery. Because he felt left out :P

poor grammar + Little Dave needed attention

I think this should put any arguments to rest... I hope...

Rock KNOWS what he's doing. And he is going to do it regardless of whether you like it or not. Let's leave it at that. :)

Be glad that you're getting kick ass stuff to clutter your ArmA 2 folder. :yay:

Well, i'll admit to being larger than average, bald and occasionally clad in a suit. But ive no idea what you "beloved LFC" is. Should I take it that it needs destroying or has somebody already set about that joyous task? :D
