Is there a demand for this?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am in the process of creating a ripped library of objects and gibs (broken bits) from other games. However to save me the hassle of doing something that wont be needed in the Arma 2 community I just want to ask whether anyone will have use for these. I mainly want to design this addon for use in Mission Making to add more diversity with objects to missions. I am just learning at the moment how to export the stuff into 02 and it will take time.

I have objects from the following games:

-Call Of Duty Modern Warfare: SAS Soldiers, Weapon Models, Small objects e.g. (TV's, Magazines, Bullets, Mobile Phones), Large Objects (Burnt out tanks, Destroyed Cars)

-Tomb Raider Anniversary: Vegetation (Small Bushes, Plants), Lara Croft (Wetsuit Skin)

-Crysis Direct X9 version: Objects and Household Items, KPA Boat and Humvee.

-Tom Clancys H.A.W.X DX9: FA/18, F15 Strike Eagle, F22 Raptor, Su47 Berkut, Mig21 Fishbed. **Note** these models do not have any interior modelling its all just external so it would need some work e.g. for Cockpit.

Other games I am extracting some models in the future: BF2, OFP:DR, FIFA 10.

If anyone is interested in any of these items please let me know.

Îœy friend I don't want to piss in your soup but Arma hardly ever gives you a chance to admire/interact with objects.

I am just saying, go easy, as most of us still try to avoid clutter in our missions...

More addOns are always welcome, but have you got the permissions for porting all that over to Arma 2?

I have changed alot of the models slightly and most of the ones Im gonna use e.g. small items I hope will not be too "big" a thing.

It will obviously not be for profit and I will acknowledge their sources, is that enough?

if you are familiar with the IW boys then probably not mate... I wouldn't go around publicising that you got them from retail games. Although i am curious how you managed to get the Cod models with now tools or radiant having been released for their engine since cod2...

A "ripped library" of contents from multiple game? For some reason I believe there are... certain issues... with the legality of such a thing.

I would seriously get express written permission from the game devs BEFORE trying to rip those, or you could find yourself on the receiving end of a nice big lawsuit.

Its a tool called 3D ripper DX. You play a game and then like Fraps you press a button and it extracts everything from that Frame in the video buffer memory and creates a file that can be opened with 3dsMax. You can then remove what you dont want and change it around or only use bits.

I wasnt worried because other games like Garrys Mod have had downloads available for COD models and other game mods have been using stuff from CoD4 with no visible complaints.

If its gonna be a big problem then I will just remove the CoD4 stuff. To be honest though most of it wouldnt really fit into Arma2 as the stuff e.g. Soldiers, Weapons are all a bit cliche and superficial.

Has a mod with ripped models/textures EVER resulted in a lawsuit?

The only Mod that I know about that caused a lawsuit was the Hot Coffee mod but that was against Take Two not the mod maker.

The Gmod team doesn't do anything but make the game. The users make 99% of the content. That CoD model pack was ripped by users, not Devs. Besides he's protected by the good ole' creative commons license. ;)

He can rip what he wants, as long as he doesn't call it his own, change it or, most importantly, get money for it.

Ripping is not the same as using it though.

If I remember correctly from say BF2 modding (one of the "future" examples in this thread) EA doesnt even allow for BF series content in other BF series games.

The Creative Commons license only applies to stuff that is licensed under creative commons. The content of interactive media is always 100% copyright. Creative commons doesn't protect a warm cup of piss in that case.

To answer your question,

After considering the legal implications and the way most of the arma community use objects......

not realy

If your serious about learning O2 or modeling in general, sure poke about other models maybe to see what they're made of, but there are plenty of free legit models out there for that, and better choice would be to pick a simple object that you think you can manage and then give it a try.

You wont get praise from noobs who don't understand the difference between a rip and an effort but you'll learn heaps more on the way

Those russian loyalists from cod MW would be cool :P

would give a nice atmosphere to a mission.

But ofcourse only if they give you permission for a port.

[music]SPAM, SPAm, SPam, Spam spam...S.P.A.M[/music]

What i'm not allowed to spam this topic...when there is talk about ripping tools, ripping models for other dev. teams, sites that promote and host ripped official and community (without permission) models....

Thou-shalt-not-steal.jpg

Good luck, but i guess there is a good change if you be able to port some of that stuff you will become the next praised god around here (by those that do'nt care at least).

@Mods: I don't care if you PR or ban me. I did my part for this community and your bosses. If they don't care...Lets at least keep the boards clean!

Well its up to the community.

If they would like this stuff then I will start porting it to Arma. Judging by the response I would say most people are in favour of this stuff.

Will do small models first like Magazines and Weapons until I get more confident.
