Do I want this game?

Recommended Posts

Folks...

Son and I play COD-MW and COD-WaW...

Considering getting Arma 2. I know Arma 2 is more technical/realistic than any other 'FPS', but not sure if I will have the patience to learn/ struggle through the learning curve required ...(I could not get the 'demo' to work...something about '3daudio error'...)

It really depends how much you're interested in the things you learn. If you find it interesting to learn how to, say, use certain rocket launchers, drive tanks, fly aircraft, make adjustments for first-shot-hit with a sniper rifle, and general infantry/tank/helicopter/airplane tactics, then the learning curve will actually be enjoyable rather than something that will turn you off of the game. If you just want to run around by yourself and shoot stuff with your weapon-of-choice, then this game is not such a great investment, although many servers let you do that as well if you really want to do that (though there are games that do that better IMO).

It's nothing like, say, COD4's multiplayer learning curve, where you need to learn spawn locations, unlock weapons, and learn to properly do stuff like sprint-jump-aim-shoot or other stupid tricks in order to be able to kill without being killed. It's a lot more about learning how the stuff in the game work, at least assuming you already know how to aim a weapon with the mouse and run with the keyboard.

I play Cod4 as well as other mainstream shooters all the time. And let me stress "play" here.

When I've had enough with the games, I start Arma 2. Arma isn't a "game". It's a state!

A state of frustration, confusion, anger and fear.

You are not going to have a good time dude! At least not in the sense you are used to "having a good time". Like "hey let's go over there and kill some doodz with machine gun YAY!" Arma 2 isn't FUN TO PLAY! It's a trial by fire or some shit like that.

But once you understand what this game is about there AINT NO GOING BACK!

Hi there

Well I played all COD series up to MW but in the end I got always back to ArmA. A learning curve is only required if you are going into mission making or modelling . If you want to have fun playing a challenging game than ArmA 2 is the way to go. Learning how to play ArmA can be fun and there is no steep learning curve in case you just want to play the missions provided with the game.

These are the responses I expected. Interesting...I will try it.

For the record, we play COD-WaW on what we call a 'tactical/crouch' server. Our clan website is 'RAW(rebels at war) Old Farts Tactical'. Our style of play/ rules has drawn a great response. The rules slow the game down, and make it more realistic. We use 'TeamSpeak' for in-game chat.

On our public game server, our rules are:

* 'No running'- move in the crouch-position only. May only 'run' if under

direct fire/or grenade. Camping is allowed.

* No 'martyrdom', no 'last-chance', no 'Arty', no 'dogs', and no 'bunny-

hopping'...if you 'walk', it must be w/ gun sights 'up'...

This is our clan website:

http://www.rebelsatwar.net/index.php

Oh, BTW, my username on our site is [RAW] DF Wallace...

This is our 'Raw' Old Farts Tactical Server'...server is located in Chicago...

http://cache.www.gametracker.com/server_info/205.234.153.10:28960/

Some of our folks are interested in ARMA2....I will pass along info...THX guys.

I play linear games and open ended realistic ones for example flight simulations. But Arma 2 is something else. I play only single player and I really enjoying it. The campaign for me is fantastic.

Its worth it. Definitely. The mod community is already pretty decent, give it until next year and there should be enough new content to keep you busy for a long time. The game isnt half as glitchy as people make out, its perfectly fine for me. Learning curve isnt too bad either, just take some time to memorize basic controls and your good. Save often when you first start too.

In that case you should have a great (possibly frustrating) time adapting those tactics to the wide open spaces and lopsided engagements in Chernarus.

I could not get the 'demo' to work...something about '3daudio error'...

lets get your demo working, and you can decide for yourself!

X3DAudio1_6.dll

If you receive the following error on launching the demo: "Demo failed to launch, X3DAudio1_6.dll was not found," you need to make sure you have the latest Directx 9 Redistributable installed. It can be downloaded here :

http://download.microsoft.com/download/3/C/4/3C46A69A-CB0F-4CCA-B1E8-248D43270D5F/directx_mar2009_redist.exe.

It's possible that extracting the demo with winzip can cause a CRC or corruption error to be reported, we recommend you use 7zip to extract the demo from the archive.

In my experience...ARMA 2 takes work. It is not like COD in the respects that you and your son can just sit down and have a go at it for 30 minutes and expect to have "fun" it is more of an experiment/study military sim in the ways I use it.

It is not streamlined or has the simplistic interfaces necessary for quick casual play. If you want something above COD and still want a quick play I might recommend the Battlefield series.

I play COD and Battlefield and I play COD on the hardcore settings to help un-noob it as much as possible and it is a ton of fun for semi-mindless play. But you really need to invest time into ARMA2, just keep that in mind.

Not saying you won't like ARMA2 but you really can't compare the "gaming" experience of ARMA to COD

Oh agreed, the guys are insanely talented, its just there arent the hundreds upon hundreds of mods out for it yet that are out for ARMA1, OPF etc... Its just a matter of time waiting for those. I meant no disrespect to the guys who make them, they are brilliant, best ive ever seen on a game.

I had the same issue downloading the demo from gamespot i think it was.

If you have steam, download it through there, mine worked first time. If you dont have steam, get it, its free, and do that. Worked for me.

You can only install it in the default location I guess... Just click next every time and I should be good if you dont have an uber funky system :)

That's what I mean...there was no default location listed...

OK, I installed the new direct x items and installed. Now the demo works. Had to configure my mouse in the game....a bit primitive in it's presentation. Can't try out yet...no time. Maybe later. We just got new maps for COD-WaW on our server, and I have to place them into my 'RCon' prog that we use to 'admin' ...

No other game has given me the awesome experience i get from these series. i have played most other easier FPS games as well, but none of them has given me that "real life" feeling that ARMA does. The openess of the maps will put you in so many different situations, and together with random weather and 24h days day/night cycles it brings something extra to that experience you get. Every game can be completely different thanks to that, but also thanks to the amount of awesome addons this community produces. Addons that give you basically any experience you want. Plus all the missions. You arent just choosing side plus map to play on. You choose side(s), map(s), addon(s), mission(s), gear and more.

Some people ive met couldnt handle ARMA as it holds so many options (ways to play), and they were into the easier setups like explained (chose side and map - go!). This game you have to dig into a bit to find what suits you, what makes you real happy. Just scratching the surface (only testing the stock missions and nothing else) might get you bored. But if you start searching for addons & missions you will most definatelly end up with a superb mix that will leave you with endless tactical fun. Remember that ARMA is slower game style - just like the rules you enforce on your server. Here you dont have to apply those rules because this is slower & clunkier - just like reality. :)

But remember to test addons and missions out and not just judge the game from the content that it ships with. Bohemia Interactive knows that this community create tons and tons of addons/mods and they provide us with the core game. I have to say though that you might not need any addons at first. The game is fun as hell as it is. Im just saying that if you think there is something lacking from the core game then know that it doesnt stop there. Far from it.

Hope it helped.

EDIT: When you pick up ARMA2 remember to check this site everyday for news on addons, missions, official patches and more: www.armaholic.com

I think you'll love it, It has that crazy amount of satisfaction when you take out an entire group of OPFOR by yourself. :yay:

Plus tons and tons of features.

Learning curve can get you but just press on and ask alot of questions on here you'll need too.

Thx for your help, guys. I really like the enthusiasm you've shown for ARMA2.

Check out our COD-WaW clan site that I posted before....think you'll like it. We are an older group of players, with the game server set up (rules listed in my post) to discourage the 'run 'n gun ADHD' crowd...

Thx, guys... I'll check out the demo....if I like it, I hope the game isn't @ $50.

Lets sum it up this way..

CoD , DoD etc. etc. = checkers.

ArmA2 = chess.

You decide... :D

Nah, Cod, DoD etc = chess/checkers.

ArmA2 = igo (go)!!

Because there are endless choices in ArmA, granted, some are really bad but hey, that's why it's awesome.

Also ... go rocks hard :D
