"Beginner's guide to ArmA Modding" Project

hello, i wanted to know how can i add masks(like the ones that chernarus insurgents are using) so i cant select them at the select face menu

but i wanted my own mask with moddifications.. how do i edit it ?

using custom faces is not as good as this way

I suspect they are modelled on. Im not in a position to check atm (my laptop doesnt like ArmA2 very much.

So in the short term you cant add them because we dont have access to the editable (MLOD) format models. You can either create your own character models and add them or wait and see if BIS release them in MLOD format.

Without resorting to creating your own unit from ther BIS ArmA1 MLODs you can Hex edit the addons to a a new texture path.

All you need is a Hex editor eg Ultrapad. I've never done it myself but there are some guides in the ArmA1 Editing section of this forum i think. If you search for "Hex edit" you should find some help there.

Most a2 models support hidden selections - more at OFPEC:

http://www.ofpec.com/forum/index.php?topic=33537

That method only seems to work on vehicles not units. I dont know why but several people have said they tried and it didn't work. I haven't had chance to look myself but at least one person i know confirms it so Hex Editing maybe the only route left.

typing while in a moving car is not easy.

Lately I'm trying to make a sound mod for ArmA2, obviously, but I have no idea where to look at to understand ArmA2's config file for sounds. I wonder if its anywhere like ARmA1's config file. I just need to understand it is all and what is what and where and how and why.

Great post RKSL-Rock!

When I read this post, see an individual who truly loves the game, and wants to keep something great lasting for a long time! You’ve got the right idea my friend.

Now, I don’t know if this was mentioned yet, but now that we have VTC instructional training software available, some even free, I encourage people with knowledge to start using it. For example, I used Camtasia Studio to make this short lesson on unloading a group of infantry and having them move to a specified location along their own waypoint. (nothing fancy, but it's my first).

What these fourms need is a very organized section where users can upload their instructional videos to relevant sections that pertain to specific editor functions. We need well experienced scriptures, modelers, and mission editors to start using some of this VTC software to produce visual tutorials. For example, I think of all the very experienced people with 3d modeling skills in applications such as 3dsMax, Maya, softimage to name a few, whom are not able to do exercise their talents because of barriers in how this game tools, and files function. It’s a shame. We have sites like ofpec loaded with lessons, but you can’t find a simple scripting lesson than breaks things down for the newbees. I think it was someone else above me who said, people are simply adding to information, as thought everyone was scripting when it was just OFP. It’s a shame because it’s only going to shrink the community, and when that happens, everything else follows.

Start making videos, and posting them, here, or on Youtube, or anywhere.

Thanks

And I've replied via email 3 times now. Check you junkmail maybe? Nor have i got any msn or skype contact details... I'll paste the email into a PM then.

I dont see what this is to do with the Beginners guide either.

Hugely looking forward to this - Been wanting to get into modding ever since OFP but never had time nor motivation really, but I am on sick leave for about six months starting october, hoping to get started on making a small island during that period. Thanks to all involved, and indeed, all who will be involved. Tutorials for the people!

I'm really looking forward to this as i plan on working on a addon for the 1st time ever a few months down the track when i'm not so busy with personal life. It will be a awesome place to visit and learm something.

Great idea

I remember the days of OFP when i use to spend so much time d/l'n and trying addons ;)

Check out the amount of aircraft alone and then the vehicles:

http://ofp.gamepark.cz/index.php?special=articles/addons.html

Actually a good reference site for modders to get ideas for arma2 too

Also forgot to mention that arma wasn't around as long as OFP was so i wouldn't have expected as much mods/addons.

Hope ARMA2 has what OFP had or more as this game is going to be around a while, especially since BIS is taking a break from this type of game for a while after its completed if the rumour is true.

Hello there. Such an endeavour as this would be very useful for me. As I'm about to make a mod for the first time and it is a bit overwhelming. I have no experience in modelling, coding, texturing and very basic scripting knowledge. Which material/resource should I consult first to get started?

oh god, i forgot about this thread..pity it didn't took off as rock wanted (but there is still time)

@topgun: it seems you lack the experience in ALL the needed aspects of mod making (especially when you've set your aim as high as you did).

start small, then move up while you learn some stuff. use the editing part of those forums or the armastack.info to pose your questions but remember no one will hold your hand and tut you through everything
