Military Adviser Offering Help To Mod Teams

Recommended Posts

A Proposal

Who I am

Hello, BI community!

My name is Harry and I am currently working as a Security Consultant/Operative/Advisor or whatever else you might want to call it. I have been working for AMA Associates Ltd for a few years now and I intend to carry on my future with them. Before I worked for AMA, I had been a Sniper in the British Army, in the 1st Battalion Mercian Regiment. Hence my name is EagleSniper, as the Insignia for the Mercian Regiment is a pair of Eagles. In my spare time I read all the books I can find on anything to do with the Military. I am collecting books that explain the designs of weapons, vehicles, equipment etc. Due to my fascination with military technology.

Enough about me, now for what I am suggesting.

What I am proposing

I have been a follower of the Arma and OPF series' for a while now, not from the very beginning but for enough to time to understand the modding process, how it works and what type of things usually get modded into the games. My interest has always been in the Mods for the British Army and their weapons or units. Unfortunately it is my personal feeling that very often these Mods are not very accurate in their depiction of the weapons or the units, either because people source their material from outdated sources or simply because they cannot be bothered to spend the time researching them.

I am offering to be a military adviser for Modding Teams (not just for British Weapons, but also every other nationality). This role would include researching information, pictures, giving explanations, helping with the design process, offering websites where people can find more information and in general just trying to keep the addons authentic. Let me give you an example.

I saw an Apache AH-64 mod quite recently and the guy who made it had quite cleverly included three different weapons load-outs for the Helicopter, which in real life it does have. However! The load-outs he had specified were not actually load-outs that an Apache would be outfitted with. Now, because I spend a lot (probably too much) time reading military books, I could tell you the three different load-outs that an Apache would have and therefore the Mod would be more authentic.

This goes for other things. I could tell you what each SAS man would carry in a four-man reconaisance patrol, right down to the type of clothing he wears. I could explain to you that L115A3 Super Magnum Sniper Rifle has a folding stock which is very similar to the one the G36 uses. I could describe to you how most Special Forces sniper teams would set up a covert observation post, and what equipment they would bring with them. I could tell you from experience, how a VIP would be guarded whether he is on foot, in a vehicle or inside a building because I have experience in these things.

Now I realise that not everyone cares about those minor details but for modding teams who are interested in making the best and most authentic mods possible. I know this idea may be pretty badly trashed but I thought I would offer my expertise just incase anyone was interested.

Thanks for reading,

Eagle Sniper

@Mark: Are you referring to sounds such as Radio Chatter, like what people would actually say in military 'dialect'? Or are you talking about the sounds of gunfire, vehicles, troop movements?

@Binkowski: Thankyou.

After reading this, are you taking the piss?

Nope, like I said I read too much. When I say clothing I mean for specialist situations, seeing as I have details of the type of gear they where in NBC threat zones, Counter-Terrorism, amphibious insertion etc.

As Gary oldman says to one of his henchmen in the movie Leon....EVERYONE!!!!! LOL

sorry, just like that movie :)

Pretty much everything you have to offer us in your R/L experience with such things as radio comms, vehical sounds (in relation to close up & at distance volumes). I think you could assist all addon makers within this community :) Although I'm personally into sound myself. So I'd like as much info regarding that aspect.

Even simple things...I mean to give us the idea of what a grenade at close range would soundlike and feel like would help me do my best to emulate that. The same goes for everything else soundwise really...We could have a whole thread dedicated to questions about sounds in combat :)

Maybe us sound modders could get you on board for when beta testing?

I see what you mean, I think sound for alot of people is a major part in the realism of games like Arma and OPF.

Yes I think I could I help with most of the sounds you have mentioned, (although I have been luck enough never to have a grenade explode right next to me), and I would be happy to help out in the Beta testing.

Which regiment or you prefer not to say?

Rifles, I can say that as we have 5 Regular Battalions! It'd be difficult to ID me thankfully!

Yep you know if more of you 'experienced' guys wanted to offer help with getting things 'right' in this game you should shout up. I mean I understand there must be an element of people who'd rather stay in the shadows but the more folks willing to assist us in making A2 more realistic the better surely :)

@Eaglesniper

Thanks for the quick reply mate, I'll be intouch when I have more sounds ingame working ingame :)

@EagleSniper: Do you have any recorder radio chatter? I am making a mission and chatter sounds near radios or inside a chopper would be usefull and awesome.

Thanks!

Are you talking about PMC Apache made by me perhaps?

If so, I'm interested of hearing about the realistic loadouts.

Could you please take the time and reply any corrections/feedback you have into the apache release topic, thanks.

I do help out - with Project UK Forces, I also try and help anyone else who's making British kit. However that's as far as my expertise goes really.

Wow a lot of replies let me try and answer them all.

@Jonny: Oh the rifles nice one mate :)

@Landmine: I don't personally, but I'll either try and find some or try and record some for you. I know some techniques.

@Snake Man: Yes I was and I did not mean to offend you, but yes I shall post in the topic with the details of the load-outs used by normal Apache Squadrons. Probably tomorrow.

Hey sorry to butt in, would you mind if I join the AH-64 conversation? It's my favorite helicopter and I love to help people with at least the visual aesthetics of it

Landmine/Eaglesniper - I'm pretty certain that while it's legal for a civilian to own the equipment to listen in to radio chatter there would be pretty nasty ramifications of recording and distributing the real thing. It would be far too easy to breach the terms of any non-disclosure agreement that eagle might have signed and/or the official secrets act without intending to...

I'm sure you can do a pretty good effort with soundforge and a slightly broken microphone however.

I doubt anyone cares about such NDA type things. The greater concern is revealing operational frequencies, code words and the like which could potentially endanger the troops in the field. Bad enough that common troop movement /tactics are published all over. Pretty easy to mess someone up when you know exactly what they will do in a given situation.

thats why SF units are trained to think "outside of the book" as most military are using the same tactics it would take away their "special" status

radio comms are not a big secret as long as you update your code phrases before moving out and make sure HQ knows them and its kept a secret during the operation

so endangering troops in the field could be a little bit more difficult then you imagine

its good to see other people around here who know what they are talking about so i will say welcome Eaglesniper ;)

The military radio chatter a civilian could possibly listen to usually does not contain any sensitive information. Terminal crypto for digital data and vocoder handsets can be used to keep unauthorized persons from retrieving sensitive information. Crypto keys and Codes are both changed on a regular basis. Unless the person in question calls the modern equivalent of Bletchley park his own ... :)

Making military radio chatter is pretty easy. I just record what I want in audacity, and edit the track with the equalizer to remove the frequencies not supported by radio/telephone. Add some appropriate background noise (aircraft engine, gunfire, etc... plenty of movies to source that from)... and bingo... there you go!

The whole radio system needs rejigging imo :)

Start from scratch, rework the main dialog for faster tactical phrasing, maybe Military Advisors could assist here?

I said it before an I'll say it again... VOICE ACTORS can be aqquired for free quite easily so it would be nice this time to have slightly different phrases for each characters voice making the sound aspect of the game more immersive.

I'm going off topic here but I'm very interested in making such an addon in the future so if any one is interested in helping me ;)
