Arma II & OA User Video Thread

Really well made vid! I much prefer these sorts of videos to the mass explosions and action. Music from some of my favourite films to boot. Been trying to make something contemplative myself, unfortunately my hardware doesn't quite stand up to the task of fluidity.

Excellent work!

I wonder if ArmA 2 supports frame rendering for making videos and such.

Hello guys -

I hope I'm not being too presumptuous by starting a thread for this, but since it's been awhile since my last project, The Bombmaker, I thought I'd share this.

This was a complicated and challenging project - a lot of work went into it. I hope that you guys enjoy it. (Full link first, then the embedded version)

Thanks,

WP

Aweosme! Very well done!

This was a complicated and challenging project - a lot of work went into it.

You managed to create a clear feeling, and were able to sustain it over a not-inconsiderable time-span, which is challenging. Somehow, the lack of music in the opening reminded me of

... (but, really, I'm just a massive fan-boy so you can probably ignore that :p).

A couple of tips: the HDR effects (for example when his hands are 'shining' bright white), can be solved by tweaking the in-game aperture. This will create a more consistent presentation of the luminosity of reflective or white surfaces where the level of black in the scene is heavy, or reducing the glow/ flicker when the black is dynamic.

If, however, the high contrast is just what your looking for, you can add it back in afterwards in PP by, say, tweaking the luma curves. Speaking of which, overall, you might think about adding subtle PP effects. Generally, I dislike aggressive PP tweaking, and sometimes its just best left well alone, but it can draw the eye more naturally into the scene.

Best,

RiE

, amazing the difference it makes, isn't it ?

First I had the idea of putting this speech as subtitles, wasn't expecting the voice would fit so well with animations.

I'm planning on using more voices from this movie for the rest of the machinima, I hope it will work.

Awesome advice - thank you! I think of myself as a storyteller first, and I kind of bring the technical elements together as I go. So there's always lots of room for improvement. Will keep all of this in mind for future projects :)

Glad you guys are liking the video. I definitely had strong influences from I Am Legend (lots of scenes) and The Road (in particular the scene with the hanging), plus elements of other films as well (There Will Be Blood, No Country, Full Metal Jacket, Moon etc) though some influences are a lot more subtle.

The main inspiration came from an old episode of the Twilight Zone with Charles Bronson and Elizabeth Montgomery called "two." That had love story elements sprinkled in that don't apply, but the underlying theme - reconciliation between enemies (US/Russians no less) with no reason left to fight - was carried over.

Anyway, I apologize for forcing the mods to merge the thread, I just wasn't sure how best to share this. I am glad you guys have enjoyed it though and I do appreciate the feedback!

Wow, nice to see such good videos popping up lately. Both of you, good videos!

Warpoet, I liked how your movie was able to make the viewer look past the editing shortages and just appreciate it for the idea. I was at first thinking about various things you could do in terms of editing and directing, but later in the video I just kind of ignored that and focused on the plot.

Basically it was a great concept that managed to show itself enough to hide any other downsides. There aren't really downsides, but rather, this project can be recreated very differently with the same exact plot and look even MORE atmospheric - be it filmed in real life, another more powerful engine, or even ArmA 2 but with more effects or other things.

So good on you for that, looking forward to more.

Nicely made machinima, only criticism I had was that not really anything happened. Who were those guys visiting the farmer and what did it have to do with the bomb going off in the city streets?

Thanks guys

Well it's supposed to be the intro of the movie. those guy in the CVPI are baaad people, from the government, and they went to that farm to tell that poor farmer (ex FS guy) they need him for a special operation "over there", that's basically what you saw in the trailer.

So yeah nothing happens but the shit shoot seriously start in the 2nd part, and once I'll put all the part together it will make more sense.

I just wanted to start the story in the US and then the guy fly to the danger zone, lol.

@Warpoet. Could totally see the Road influences in there, almost felt just like the book, but with lots of color. Well told story and very nice direction mate. Good work!

@Macadam Cow. As always, lovely stuff. Tears were brewing.

If you had gone through all the epic maps over the 10 years in your BIS dedication I would have cried lol. Really I would have!

Keep it up fellas

you pussies :D

I know many maps are missing but the song ended at a precise moment and I had to make a choice.

I actually have shots of every single map (from ArmA2 and also most of ArmA1 map). This really make me realise how incredible and talented map makers were.

We are so lucky they let us play with their creation for free.

I do have plans for other community tributes (addons, mod,map,...) so...stay tuned :)

Thanks a lot guys
