Anyone have a good recomendation for me?cheers A 5770 costs about that much and seems to be good value. Make sure your psu can handle it.
Gruman 123 Posted June 4, 2010 Hi all, im thinking to upgrade my PC a little bit. At the moment i have a Q6600 @ 3.0ghz, evga 780i Motherboard, evga Ggtx285. everything on H2o. Running he game on Normal settings and getting in chernarus mostly below 30fps. My question: what would be the priority to upgrade? A x58 & i7 or a new graphic card (gtx 480 / 5870)? Is there a big difference between a q6600 @ 3.0 and a i7 at about 3ghz? Cant upgrade everything because of my adicction to H2O cooling (expEnsive). Written in iphone ... ;)

With a similar setup (see my sig) I play with a mixture of medium, high and very high settings - and 30FPS is pretty much my minimum, which only happens in big towns like Chernogorsk. You can probably squeeze a whole truckload of performance out of that rig with a bit of tweaking and perhaps some software updates. Can you go into a bit more detail about your system and in-game settings? To be more specific: - All Arma2 video settings. Best would be a screenshot of the advanced settings screen. - Arma2 version. (using beta?) - NVidia driver version. - Any special driver settings for Arma2, for example VSync disabled?
Gruman 123 Posted June 4, 2010 @MadDogX Thanks for your answer. Well, i guess my system is a little bit trashy . Finaly time for a FORMAT. :D - All Arma2 video settings. Best would be a screenshot of the advanced settings screen. - Arma2 version. (using beta?) Arma 1.05 with ACE and some TF86 Addons - NVidia driver version. An Old-One: 196.21 - Any special driver settings for Arma2, for example VSync disabled? only the VSync disabled and i force 3D modus all the time. Sometimes the Graphiccard clocked down to 2d Mode while i was playing Arma... Thanks
maddogx 13 Posted June 5, 2010 Here are some suggestions for your Arma2 video settings: - Set Objects detail to normal. - Shadows to very high. - Anisotropic filtering to very high. - Antialiasing to low. Objects detail on very high tends to slow my system down a lot and doesn't provide much better visuals in most cases. Similar with antialiasing - there isn't much visual difference for me between low and normal, but the performance difference is quite significant. Setting aniso filtering to very high shouldn't really affect your performance. As for shadows, try them on very high. I know it may sound counter-intuitive, but I feel I get better performance on very high than on high. May be due to load shifting between CPU and GPU. Also, consider trying a beta patch. Betas are basically installed as mods, so you don't need to worry about having to "revert" if it causes you any problems. Just grab the latest one here (see the green bar at the top of the page). After installing it, you'll need to make sure you adjust the way you start the game, because it can be tricky if you're trying it the first time. I can help with that too, if you want to try it. Mucky88 10 Posted June 5, 2010 I posted my specs a few pages back, and since I've been reading up on ArmA 2 alot recently while waiting on my compy to arrive, I've been worrying that the i7 920XM will be too slow for the CPU hungry engine. Intel Core i7 920XM 2.0GHz (3.2GHz Turbo Mode, 8MB Cache) ----------- Is this bad?

Dont worry, it's fast enough, just dont forget to add -cpucount=4 (or 2 if it's a dualcore, dont really know intel mobile chips) to the shortcut. You can adapt settings in arma 2 to your cpu and gpu to give you adequate performance with lots of eyecandy, and since no pc in existance totday can max out arma 2 there'll always be a use for a faster processor/gpu. Yeah, it's a 4 core. I have confidence in my GPU setup (xfire 5870s) but I guess I won't know how it performs until I actually benchmark it once it arrives. Gruman 123 Posted June 6, 2010 @MadDogX Thanks for your advice. After the reinstalling of win7 and installing Arma2 on a SSD i tryied your settings and it looks good. Tried some of the proper mods too. Will see how that goes in the next TF86OP I often tried Betas, but since i joined TF86, i havent, because they arent used there. but thanks for your offer. But back to my first question. If i would have to choose, which one would you take: A GTX-480 or a new MB X58 with a I7 930 OC@4Ghz? Thanks best regards
Pyronick 21 Posted June 6, 2010 But back to my first question. If i would have to choose, which one would you take: A GTX-480 or a new MB X58 with a I7 930 OC@4Ghz?Thanks best regards I know I would go for the latter one.I skipped the GTX-480, way too expensive, need to replace my PSU and my case. I think I'll wait for the new AMD Southern Islands series.
bangtail 0 Posted June 6, 2010 The 480s are great but as you don't have an i7 yet, I'd go with the i7/mobo first. You can pick up a next gen video card later on :D
Wolfstriked 11 Posted June 6, 2010 I just got my GTX480.Pretty sweet card although A2 still chugs in dense forests and city areas.I also have lucked out as I purchased a Q9550 at 2.83 and instantly overclocked to 3.6 with stock air cooler and no voltage increase. It sucks that I spent $700 dollars and it still chugs but its way better than before. RogueScotsman 10 Posted June 6, 2010 (edited) Hey guys I need some advice on graphic cards, I'm gonna try to get either a NVIDIA GT240,250 or a Geforce 9800. Which do you guys think would be the best for Arma? and what kind of powersupply would I need for them, cause I need to upgrade that too. On their specifications they say around 300-450 watts, I thought that was kinda low so was gonna double check before I bought one. Thanks guys Edit: Hey, just started looking at ATI cards, anybody know what their cards are like compared to NVIDIA? NVIDIA has a list on their site showing their cards in order or performance, was wondering if ATI had something like that or if you guys know a good ATI card thats equal to the ones I listed above, or better, around same price Edited June 6, 2010 by RogueScotsman
Wolfstriked 11 Posted June 7, 2010 Is this what you need? http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-graphics-card-geforce-gtx-480,review-31866-6.html
RogueScotsman 10 Posted June 7, 2010 (edited) Yeah, I found that earlier but wasnt sure if it was a good list or not. I'm gonna check into a bit more in a sec. Theres a 10% off gift card going out from Best Buy this month, I went there and checked what they had in. This is the ones that seemed good, ATI Cards: HD 5570 1GB DDR3 $99.99, HD 4650 $79.99, HD 5450 512mb DDR3 79.99, HD 4670 1GB DDR3 $139.99. NVIDIA: 9800GT 1GB DDR3 $119.99, and a 240GT for around $99.99 (didnt take a pic of that one so not sure). I'm gonna check that list now and compare them, but if anybody has any personal experience or suggestions I'd appreciate it, and thank you Wolf for the link man EDIT: It seems like the 9800 is the best bet, I'm gonna look into the HD 4670 and the HD 5570 a bit more though. Alright checked them out, the 4670 seems to be better than the 5570 but worse than a 9600 GT, so I'm assuming the 9800 is better than the 9600 making it the best performing and best priced of all of those. I dunno lol, my comp fried like 5 years ago and I havent dealt with another one until I got this new one last week, I'm so behind now its not even funny Edited June 7, 2010 by RogueScotsman
ohitsduy 10 Posted June 7, 2010 Hey guys I have been playing the operation flashpoint series every since it came out and i finally found arma II at my local bestbuy! I have a few question i would like to ask y'all what mods would y'all recommended that would make the game play more exciting!? Plus what are some of the graphic cards are y'all using? I might have to upgrade mine real soon! XD
no use for a name 0 Posted June 7, 2010 Really there's so many mods out there you really just need to search the Mods/Addons: Released forum; or go to armaholic.com and search their dl section. The main one is Ace2 which adds too much to list here; but there are lots of others to make it more "exciting". Graphics, AI improvements, special effects (dust, smoke, fire, etc.) Right now I'm using a GTX 260 and have no problems running the game near maxed detail; but my CPU is the bottleneck as this game is more CPU dependent than GPU. In empty/low populated maps or multiplayer (since the server is taking most of the CPU load) I get 30-40FPS and smooth. When I play singleplayer and/or super populated maps my system crawls to 12-15fps You might list you system specs so we know if you need an upgrade
ohitsduy 10 Posted June 7, 2010 Ohhh i seee! well my specs are AMD Phenom X4 9500 quad core with 6gb windows vista 64 bit edition and my graphics card is Nvida Geforce 8600 GT

RogueScotsman 10 Posted June 7, 2010 I've been checking around for the same thing man, I have a list of the cards I found in-store at Best Buy on the other page. I really think the 9800 is the best bet though, and in-store I think they usually have 450w, 500w, 650w, and 900w, but they seem too expensive to me, best deal I saw so far was a 500w for $79.99. Also check around some for the 10% off card their giving away this month, I got one in the mail randomly so it shouldnt be too hard to find and get one mailed to you.
