Few questions relating Arma 2 being on consoles

Recommended Posts

Before some of you start bashing this thread, which I'm sure some would, I would like to confront that I used the search engine, and I didn't find the clear answears to what I been looking for. So if anyone kind enough to answear these, then I wouldn't care if this thread get's closed or whatever.

I also played Arma, but my PC isn't souped enough for Arma 2, and well, most of my gaming activities belong to Xbox, so my questions are:

1) Is this game really confirmed for 360 version? If so, can you please link me the article that contains the developer stating that.

2) Also, I don't think I will get a straight answear out of this, but will it release at the same time as PC, or release somewhere in Summer. I assume that release date of the console version will probably be later than the PC one.

3) I would also like know if there are any upcomming events that Bohemia is planning to release lots of uncovered info, where, I/we(console players) might look forward to for more details on console version Arma 2.

The Xbox version is not confirmed yet. The 'official' status is TBD (To be decided/determined)

If there is a console version then it most probably will be released after the PC version. Thanks to BIS for not developing a console game first and then make a crappy port like most other companies. :)

Probably they will, if and when the console version is officially announced.

Can't find the captions....

Mouse over the arrow in the bottom right corner of the video window. It's the icon with CC. Click on it, and captions will come up if it's red. If it's gray, there will be no captions.

Officially, no, but from many videos we've seen, suggesting that they're developing 360 version alongside the PC version.

2) Also, I don't think I will get a straight answear out of this, but will it release at the same time as PC, or release somewhere in Summer. I assume that release date of the console version will probably be later than the PC one.

Accoding to BIS, they're planning a simultaneous release for ArmA2 worldwide, I can't remember hearing anything about the consoles, but I'd assume the same goes for the console version.

3) I would also like know if there are any upcomming events that Bohemia is planning to release lots of uncovered info, where, I/we(console players) might look forward to for more details on console version Arma 2.

New info about the game is being released constantly, over various sources such as ArmA2 website, ArmA2 Facebook and Steam groups. If you're asking about events like E3 and the likes, last such event was GCD'09, and IDEA confirmed ArmA2 being present there, but there wasn't much information coming from there, as far as I'm aware. I can only assume it was a closed display for publishers or whatever.

The reason they can't officially announce an Xbox version is because of legal issues. Something to do with they need a publisher and rights to create the game before they can legally claim to be making it for the Xbox. I might have misinterpreted it, though.

If you're referring to this post, I don't interpret it actual legal issues, though it can be interpreted like that.

Looks promising. So, it seems that 360 version for this game is pretty much set.

I was anticipating OFP 2 for a while, but seeing that CM is failing on deliver gameplay and being so secretive about the game, not to mention the extermination of mission editor for consoles, kind of makes me want to have another option, like this game, which in a lot of ways seems superior to OFP 2.

I'm going to stick to these forums for a while, to find more info about the console version of this game.

My last question, is, doesn't this community have a newsletter like OFP 2 forums has, where you subscribe you get email alerts when ever there is new info out?

Thanks for everybody's help here.

You could be right, any idea why there is such a rule?

I don't know really, it's a possibility that they purely want to make sure that they've got all the technicalities done before promising anything. Just like it's kind of obligatory to deliver a console game without show-stopping bugs.

IMHO....

that it will be for xbox. The xbox and pc are closer to hardware platforms then the PS3 and BE Cell processor. Even major studios like Ubisoft had trouble porting early titles to the PS3. They are getting better at it, but for BI it may be too much to do.

Hopefully we'll see at PS3 version, when ArmA III comes out.

I like the thought that they will do the PC first, get a good solid release, then work on a console port, and all it's idiosyncrasies.

It's going to be PC for me this version.

I was under the impression that most multi-console games are parallel developed nowadays? That seems to be the case with ArmA2 as well according to that interview.

Thank you so much for this comment, at least BIS shows some brains and dont follow the marketing campaign of Microsoft and other companies!

To the OP:

It is expected, that ArmA2 will run better on multicore PCs, because it will support them which ArmA1 didnt. So keep your hopes up and if not, buy a new pc, it will be a complete different gameplay: mouse, trackir (if you have it), mission editor, anti aliasing, anisotropic filter and especially MODS!

I'm just hoping they are developing it for PS3 too. BIS should not forget that both consoles have large amounts of fans, and there IS profit to be made on the Sony console too.

There are large amounts of PS3 owners on this forum who wish to see it on said console. Elsewhere, there are also PS3 owners awaiting ArmA 2 just as eagerly.

Now would be a good time to dominate Codemasters...I'm not talking about formally announcing an X360 or PS3 version...but to develop for both consoles, with a rudimentary mission editor *cough*templates*cough* would draw in a huge amount of profit, and usurp a large fanbase from OFP: DR.

Please BIS, don't leave the PS3 owners behind. A simulation like this is too good to only make it to the X360 and PS3. There are a large amount of PS3 owners looking forward to this, some even willing to buy it on PC and PS3 (as I will) to play it with their friends on PS3 and to play it in a hardcore manner on PC.

This has pretty much 100% of the same net effect for the PC version.

Nerf.

Parallel development still involves porting the software to other platforms.

The core software which is then ported to all platforms is still built with consoles design parameters in mind.

Hi all

The problem with pure PC platform development is that it leads to bloatware and unoptimised code.

Restrict what resources a programmer has and they will come up with new innovative solutions to get round it; and be more careful with their code. They also get that external audit of their software and beta test programs and systems as part of the package.

Developing for consoles improves what we get on PC.

Kind Regards walker

The difference there is that it was not parallel developed. The port was done after the console version by a seperate company.

Many games that are parallel developed turn out quite well and optimised on PC. Recent examples would be FEAR 2 and HAWX. Both run and look great on my old PC.

COD4, L4D, Mirror's Edge, all of them run really well on my outdated PC despite being developed for the devil console as well.

Also I have a feeling all of the games mentioned in the post above are indeed ported, but I may be wrong.

Either way, I trust BIS on this one, and there's just no way they'll pass up an opportunity to get this released on consoles as well unless they're completely certain it will turn the PC version to shit, which it won't. We can't expect them to lose potential finances for future projects because some of us are paranoid about consoles..?

It's not the console's fault those developers were unable to develop the games properly. See the many other examples where the games came out fine

I'm sure they'd rather just spend a few extra month on the development then, especially since there's no set release date (atleast not officially, as far as I know?).

I believe L4D and Mirror's Edge are pc to console ports. One game I know of that suffered from console developement was Oblivion. It was developed for consoles initially then ported to PC (granted released the same day on both platforms). The performance issues among other things were painful. Now I'm not saying all console to pc ported games are poor, but it is a reoccuring theme with quite a few games, where as Matt mentioned, the developers treat the PC release as the afterbirth.

Also how does developing for consoles improve what we get for the PC? They're still stuck in DX9 (DX9.1c?). Hopefully Windows 7 will drag the majority of the XP enthusiasts over after Vista's shakey reputation. That'll at least convince more dev's to put money into the technology. Contrary to what many believe, DX10 is a better GUI. This can be said for anyone who has coded a game native to DX10 (not DX9 games with some DX10 features tacked on which is what most DX10 titles were) will say nothing but positive things over the old DX9 gui, and this is from indie developers as well as larger developers.

2 games i was looking forward to, and i know were developed in parallel were farcry2 and Fallout3. Both dissapointed me (farcry 2 didn't have a fire selector because quote = " there were not enough buttons on a console pad...")

so while i want BIS to hit the console market = more money for them, i prefer having a stable/optimized PC release (yes, all features on the keyboard) and then the console version.

I do believe they are gonna release it only to xbox360, which is all fine though, but i will prly buy it for my ps3 if it comes to it
