Spokesperson 0 Posted June 12, 2008 How do you avoid the bike bug? When will it get fixed? It's made the bikes useless for long time already.
sparks50 0 Posted June 12, 2008 It was supposed to be fixed in 1.09, but that proved untrue. Its especially annoying at special forces missions and RPGs like City Life and SL, bikes are such a great type of vehicles, too bad we cant use them.
Infam0us 10 Posted June 12, 2008 How do you avoid the bike bug? Either don't drive them, or decrease your speed when approaching hills and hope for the best ...
SWAT_BigBear 0 Posted June 13, 2008 use it to your advantage and do a 5km wheelie.
Infam0us 10 Posted June 13, 2008 use it to your advantage and do a 5km wheelie. Ha I used to do that, drive into a Tree Stump in the North and take screenshots!
hailstorm 4 Posted June 13, 2008 does anyone else think it's stupid that a 650cc off-road dirtbike cannot go faster than 56 km/h over terrain? if there's one ArmA vehicle that could go at it's maximum speed over rough ground, it should be the damn trailbike! try it for yourself in the armory (it shows your speed) - you can't go any faster unless you sit on a road for more than ten seconds. and slowing down (from 56! ) to avoid death (while a short-term solution) is ridiculous. I've come off my bike at 60. I buggered my wrist and got bruised up, but I'm not exactly dead!
suma 8 Posted June 13, 2008 If anyone can provide a reliable step by step repro for this, chance is we will find what is causing it and fix it. So far we were unable to reproduce the issue.
Jex =TE= 0 Posted June 13, 2008 I've fallen off once after many trips and ridden the bike for 5 minutes and not fallen off (X-countyr and on roads). In 1.12 it was fixed, in 1.13 it was back again and now it seems fine to me.
hailstorm 4 Posted June 13, 2008 If anyone can provide a reliable step by step repro for this, chance is we will find what is causing it and fix it. So far we were unable to reproduce the issue. unfortunately, suma, can't help you on the death issue - only had it happen to me once, but it was when flew off the side of a hill and landed on my head - but i assume that was a built-in vulnerability of the bike, so not really a bug. but my perspective is purely singleplayer - so it doesn't help much. maybe it's a lag/sync bug that somehow makes the program think the bike is inverted (or close to) and ejects the player? factoring in player damage when they eject from a moving vehicle at high speed - possibly leading to player death? unsure about that one, but regardless, the bike's top speed over rough ground (and also it's weight values) need an increase. xeno 234 Posted June 14, 2008 If anyone can provide a reliable step by step repro for this, chance is we will find what is causing it and fix it. So far we were unable to reproduce the issue. The problem is, there is no reliable step by step repro for this, and that is the problem. I often die (in MP) when driving from Paraiso airfield to Corazol near the gas station on the road to Corazol (straight road, no curves). But sometimes I also die when driving 100 m only, no regularity. Just play a MP mission with, let's say more than 10 players that has motorbikes and you'll die (though you probably won't need 10 players for that). And if you are on it please fix one other annoying MP bug: falling of a parachute some meters above the ground (and no, no enemy near you that could shoot you out of the parachute). Mainly happens near hills (I guess height detection provides some wrong results here). Xeno
Infam0us 10 Posted June 14, 2008 If anyone can provide a reliable step by step repro for this, chance is we will find what is causing it and fix it. So far we were unable to reproduce the issue. Hey Suma, off the top of my head you can recreate it by driving over a Tree Stump in the North at full speed straight on in a bike. Then once you hit it the front tyre will stay up providing you keep the speed up. I can try it again if you want it in more detail? Of course if you where referring to falling off the bike itself, it seems to happen when you go over any form of bump at speed, the bike seems to lose control and flip you over with it. Hope that helps
Casimir 0 Posted June 14, 2008 i have a video of it happening if that will help? [edit - Video Added] Im not sure this is the actual bug although i have suffered many variations fo the bug, from incidences like this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr2KcMaoJMg however there have been times where simply driving a bike i have falen and died for no apparent reason. Spokesperson 0 Posted June 14, 2008 Yes, it's hard to reproduce. But I've only experienced it in multiplayer (as that's the only mode I play). It happens at all different speeds. Usually within a few minutes of driving. You just get ejected when you shouldn't. Problem should be within that deciding function. It overreacts to small (but maybe sharp) changes in terrain. When you have your legs damaged, it seems that you get ejected in a prone position (not sure about this).
suma 8 Posted June 14, 2008 maybe it's a lag/sync bug that somehow makes the program think the bike is inverted (or close to) and ejects the player? factoring in player damage when they eject from a moving vehicle at high speed - possibly leading to player death? You just get ejected when you shouldn't. Problem should be within that deciding function. It overreacts to small (but maybe sharp) changes in terrain. Thanks for the description, it helped. While the Spokesperson's theory behind it (with the detection function) was not correct, the posts helped me to understand the problem. The problem was not that you could be directly killed while driving in MP (this is something which we have already fixed in 1.09), the problem was you could be erroneously ejected, which sometimes might have lead into a kill. The ejection was caused only MP because it was a result of your remote images simulated on other computers. If such remote image got into a situation where eject was expected, it forced the eject, which was a bug, because it was only a remote image which should have no authority over the simulation. I am fixing this in a code base. (And before you ask: I am unable to tell know when and how the fix will be distributed).
suma 8 Posted June 14, 2008 And if you are on it please fix one other annoying MP bug: falling of a parachute some meters above the ground (and no, no enemy near you that could shoot you out of the parachute). Mainly happens near hills (I guess height detection provides some wrong results here). Normally I would disregard any bug reports mixed into an unrelated thread, but in this case it was a related one. The underlying cause was exactly the same: the ejection from the parachute was caused by a remote image ground contact. Fix implemented.

-=seany=- 5 Posted June 14, 2008 Great news this is fixed. After Suma's first post I thought to myself, how could it not be reproducible? Every time I get on the damn thing I die (multiplayer). But then I loaded up Arma and did a test drive around Sahrani in the Single player mission editor. Its the furthest I have ever driven that bike in Arma. Never died for the whole time. celery 8 Posted June 15, 2008 Has the multiplayer bouncy bike bug been fixed already? The one that causes bikes to jump like crazy and eventually break when nobody is riding them. Usually caused by a very slight push by a dude or an explosive and the dampers do the rest.

Out of interest, not having ridden one myself - what IS the sort of speed that can be safely sustained by such a bike over moderately rough terrain in real life? "and slowing down (from 56! ) to avoid death (while a short-term solution) is ridiculous. I've come off my bike at 60. I buggered my wrist and got bruised up, but I'm not exactly dead!" Don't assume "death" in the game necessarily means death - there's no modelling of: alive but unconscious, alive but in shock and not properly aware of the world around you, or alive but with several broken limbs and in massive pain and unable to move or fire any weapon.
