GodHammer 0 Posted April 15, 2008 I made a fast model today, but it will be a fixed Sam site, not a mobile one. Anyway I found it really easy to model out, but do not ask me how to make it work, because I'm ZERO on scripting... Collaborating will be the fastest and best solution Everybody! SA-5 Gammon W.i.p. This is the main body of the bad boy, then I'll model the launcher.
Karaya1 0 Posted April 15, 2008 Very very nice model but is the SA-5 really useful for Arma? IIRC it is an extremely long-legged SAM with a minimum range of 40-50km and a maximum range of ~200km intended to intercept high altitude strategic bombers. A SA-2 and SA-6 site would be sooo cool! Again the model is brilliant, simply the usefulness of the system is questionable.
mechastalin 0 Posted April 15, 2008 Very very very nice model and textures, I don't know if I have the time or drive but if its completely finished I could try my hand at it. Perhaps more sams will be on the way if this one is successful, we need more of them in ArmA for sure. At the very least it'll be a very pretty unique mission target. Also, if you want the shadow to be as pretty as possible make sure you keep as many vertices closed as possible.

It have 4 veicals with rockets and 1 radar in batery. But hey any sam to the army is cool. Just make theam more.
Col. Faulkner 0 Posted April 15, 2008 Might as well be a Saturn 5 for all the practical use it'd be! It'll give speshul forces something to blow up I suppose.
mechastalin 0 Posted April 15, 2008 Yeah, as a mission target it'll be nice, the problem with most missions where you attack airfields or whatever is the complete lack of any long range AA weapons or similar systems. Also, even though this system wont be of much use on Sahrani, I imagine once we start getting much larger custom islands things will change.
GodHammer 0 Posted April 15, 2008 Most of all it's SCARY in its 10.7 meters of lenght! I agree that usefulness was not a parameter I followed when I decided to build this one, but still it could be a good target for AT guns, helos, spec ops... Would just need a static basic animation and the possibility to be tracked-locked as a target. What do you guys think?
MEDICUS 0 Posted April 15, 2008 What do you guys think? Do it!
GodHammer 0 Posted April 16, 2008 Missile is almost done, needs just fins and some weathering Cheers, GH.
wld427 1705 Posted April 16, 2008 incredible textures bud. That rocket is amazing especially for just tinkering......
CameronMcDonald 146 Posted April 16, 2008 It's definitely an imposing missile, as far as missiles go. Nice work mate.
Gargantua 0 Posted April 16, 2008 looking good. but imho if you want to make smth static... better stick to smth short range like S-125 (SA-2) Quote[/b] ]Would just need a static basic animation and the possibility to be tracked-locked as a target. What do you guys think? yep, can be great in static. especially if you model some radar station too i even saw pictures of ural based so.. but SA-6 is my favorite anyway. and still used even in modern conflicts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Radar_kub1.jpg
GodHammer 0 Posted April 16, 2008 Added rust, panels and some more writings. I'm adding tail's fins then this baby goes to Aimpoint for a masterclass Normal Mapping Cheers, GH.
xnodunitx 0 Posted April 16, 2008 Is there by chance a possibility of you making a texturing tutorial? Yours is quite impressive and I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one to appreciate a few tips and tricks of how you do it
PSYCHOSIM 0 Posted April 16, 2008 Very cool, nice work, though I do tend to agree that smaller SAM systems would be of better use.
mattxr 9 Posted April 16, 2008 Wow i cant wait for this badboy ingame. Theres already other sams in the making, if the guy wants big let him make big This could be ideal actually. Story: The SLA have acuried 4 new SAM systems with massive range, this is stopping our airforces from flying send in spec ops etc etc and many other possibiilties.. It also doesnt have to be configed for to fire at Air twice the size of sharani.
roberthammer 582 Posted April 16, 2008 OH Really awesome AA rocket GH great for some missions, btw when i spotted this 1st time i meaned is it some space rocket
orson 0 Posted April 16, 2008 Ye its not bad looking ... leading edge on the fins is too square .. merge those points . tbh tho it is way too big for anything other than eye candy and for that end you might as well have aimed even bigger as for usable SAM's in arma and ofp ... i think SA-2 is about right for the bigger size . wld427 1705 Posted April 16, 2008 well i think its sweet. One launcher on monte pesto could cover the entire map..... so fly below it......or go "wild weasel" on it. Besides has anybody gotten past the AI not engaging anythin at long distances? as far as i know not.
GodHammer 0 Posted April 16, 2008 Thank you all for comments and advices, really apreciated! I'm working on the launcher, a real pain, unfortunately just a lot of different pics but no blueprint ! About tutorial I'll write one soon, as I get 5 minutes free Here's a fast preview of the launcher main body, just 24 faces so far, it has too many cylinders, it would raise the poly count to outer space modeling all... Daniel 0 Posted April 16, 2008 Dude, even if that only got fired in a cutscene, still looks feakin awesome! As someone else said, that'll look very imposing in game. Hope you churn out a smaller range system too.
landdon 0 Posted April 16, 2008 I say build it and the mission makers will come! I think a country could have an In-Depth Missile Defense System consisting of various High, Medium, Low, Fixed, Mobile and MANPAD systems. Also, if you used the Mando Missile system too one could always change the parameters of the missile itself. Think of it a surplus system a 3rd world country got for next to nothing. Dark SudoNix 1 Posted April 17, 2008 For one, do you guys know how big a surface to air missile actually is?!? those cute little man portable surface to air missle that can also be attached to bmps ect. are mostly used to take out small slow moving aircraft... ie. helos, c130's (cargo aircraft), and maybe a few jets... but a surface to air missile has to be big to hold enough fuel to even catch up with a fast moving jet. Think about it... by the time the missile is launched, think about how far it actually has to travel before it hits its target... that and the rate the fuel is being burned to make it go so fast. a small missile, like a stinger... or something like that doesnt have range on it...
Dark SudoNix 1 Posted April 17, 2008 another thing, i think the mando missile system is a bad idea... i say just use the config for the stingers or strellas in game... that way chaff. can still be used against it... not everyone uses or even knows how to use mando missile lab or whatever else... you forget that not the whole community knows how to mess with config files and all that... GodHammer 0 Posted April 17, 2008 Thanks again everybody for comments, tips and advices. I'm merging soon my 3D with Wld427's one, in order to work together and work faster. I've spot nice ideas around in the Forum, the plans are to add a vast selection of SAMs, from fixed postations to mobile wheeled or tracked ones. We need most of all help in texturing, compiling everything you want and can. Every little help would be really apreciated! I'm trying to build up a goodlooking and realistic Gammon, I'd like to see it ingame with good scripts, would be marvellous having a working one, maybe the minimum range could be turned a bit down, so it could be useful and a real treath for Airborne. Consider also that it can bring a nuclear warhead, a good objective for Spec Ops and a fearsome menace for everybody on the field. Having a non working model would just take away adrenaline, I mean " it does not work, it's not dangerous ". Handling a really dangerous menace, instead, would keep everybody's attention focused on the mission's goal. Unfortunately I cannot help with scripts... I'd like an easy to use missile, ready to be put in a mission for the "weekend modder", but more complicated scripts like Mando's ones are more than welcome for sure. Flexibility is my goal, and also a lot of fun for everybody! Cheers, GH
