Good job.

This has the potential to be a VERY good map, there's just a few things that really need to be added before it feels "complete":

-Shape

You usually don't find gigantic square islands in reality. If you could find a way to even out the edges of the Island to make it look more natural it would improve the map leaps and bounds.

-Lack of Objects

I like where you're going with the desert theme, but even deserts have some trees. Adding the occasional stand of palms, bushes, rocks, and maybe a few villages would really help the map feel more "real". It won't really effect performace unless you're planning on putting in a forest.

-Water

I like the canyons! But we need water flowing continuously through them! One thing I hated abotu Sahrani was the lack of rivers/canals/marshes. This map is so close to having an extensive river system, all you need to do it raise the water. Make sure to throw some rocks and greenery around the water for more realism.

Also, the two rivers don't look to realistic running the way they are. Parhaps you could eliminate one, or incorporate them. Adding some tributaries and streams would be awesome too.

Once again, I'm really looking forward to seeing where this map goes. Good job.

Dont talk about something not beeing realistic, heres the pic of the acctual site.

iranirqbrd2lz6.jpg

There are 2 dryed up riverbeds, there is not alot of vegetation in this part of the desert, there are no real settlements in real life on this location.

But again, dont worry we will make it nice, about the shape of the island, i'll see if i can make it a bit more island like.

Again, read bit up in this forum, we are working on Roads, Vegetation, colors, and some other important settings and parameters.

I'm sure we cant please everybody but if this is going to be a A1 project it would not be hard to build more and different islands, so again dont worry, everybody will have his or her perfect island in the future.

No real progress for now on some issues, but tonight i'll take up the fight with visitor again.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Later,

Alphons

Very nice work and I only hope to see a series of these based on all parts of the earth smile_o.gif

With this particular part of the world I think having too many palm trees scattered around wouldn't be as effective as more rocks and if you can, a lot of brown deserty bushes in the valleys and such. I only say that about palm trees because my impression is that on high altitude areas like that (which is what i get but may be wrong) trees don't really grow and are really just replaced by shrubs etc. Bushes would at least offer some decent cover for multiplayer games etc without looking out of place and being too cluttered.

One thing I noticed in the map also that wasn't mentioned was the lighting seemed too dim. There weren't any highlights on rifles etc so i guess the sun needs to take off it's umbrella.

highlights on rifles !!!!

Good point, this is yet another config worry for me.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Fictional at the minute, but hey its a WIP so It will be adjusted.  smile_o.gif

sorry, i had to ask this but will it be easy/hard to portray the realistic dimentions well in ArmA maps?

Will you or can you portray the realistic proportions to these future projects?

because when i tested the map the montains seemed very close to each other. I just stop for a while and thought how i would creat a mission in this map. It was challenging.. I know you will add/improve with more things. I just kinda felt i was in Mars with all those bumps very closed to each other (sort of expression exagerated)

edit:typo

Elevate the terrain above sea level all the way to the map border and it will become extruded ad infinitum, this will give it a sense of vastness.

bravo 6, Sand dunes, ever seen one?

Besides, Looking at the natural contours on that satellite pic it the terrain looks fairly real

I'm not saying other wise. I'm impressed with their work, i really liked it. Don't take me wrong about that.

I just want a more realistic environment wink_o.gif

maybe you could download images directly from some database

like nasa's worldwind;

software; http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/

earth database; http://www.worldwinddata.com/

it's even got height and vegetation information - though not too precise

i'm fairly confident there's free databases somewhere for some specific locations in high detail aswell

Update on map,

Hope to release a the final map within 2 weeks.

Theres some more settlements, couple roads and dirttracks, fully operational airport(ILS), more vegetation, better drivebility for vehicles off road, better colors on textures.

Still some work needs to be done, but i really think to be ready within 2 weeks from now.

Later,

Allie

I'm in love with this map. It inspired me to get back into Arma, good framerates, great visibility and very realistic feeling.

I can't wait to give them a go on the final version.

GIJOE94 where do you put the border.pbo file ?

Never heard anybody about the island is crashing the game.

Update on map:

Very good results yesterday on the last little problems i had with the map.

It will be released within 2 weeks for sure, trying to get it out sooner.

There is really a lot of improvement.

I placed it in the addons folder. At the map selection screen, it's there, but when I try and open it in the editor it crashes.

Maybe it's conflicting with another addon? Try removing all other addons, then add on by one to systematically filter through where there might be a conflict.

Hi !

I have just tested this island: it's quite nice and runs fine. Did some quick battles with armor, helicopter and infantry. The rolling hills make for very good tactics !

Otherwise, the main ground texture is too redish, in my opinion, they may need to be a bit toned down (blend). The soldiers look too weird, as if they had been drawn on another colour palette.

Keep up the good work !

Malick
