    There is more official word on the beta coming out a few weeks after E3. Also, beta content will be available on the development build pretty much right after E3. So, get the dev build and you'll likely be using the new units around June 14th.

    Arma 3 Trailer

    I was contemplating the impact of past Arma trailers, and personally none seemed to really convey the intense Arma experience, or at least sell it to me. I feel a game as immensely detailed as this deserves far more than previous clumsy gameplay trailers have provided. Perhaps rather than presenting the game as a set of features or as a narrative, exploit the games strengths as a sandbox - as a limitless combination of gameplay possibilities. For example, this could be in the form of a soldier running through various combat zones which transition through eye blinks - engaging us as one soldier part of a larger conflict. This could easily demonstrate a great deal of the Arma content as he could board a chopper and then blink and find himself in the cockpit of an F-35. Not in a boring 'we have this, this and this' presentation, but in a creative experience enticing the audience with the message that it isn't simply another shooter. That it has endless possibilities. The 'This Is War' slogan would oddly fit nicely into this scenario. The experience of war on all fronts. So I suppose I was wondering and hoping, will Arma3 try to lift it's game to advertise itself as something 'more'?

    Course they aren't as quality as Arma3 trees. The point was to demonstrate there are older trees which convey lighting much better than Arma3 trees. It's to show a contrast between lit trees and flat ones.

    johncage, you can click on the thumbnails to open them up in 1920x1080 resolution. One solution to resolve the current diffuse flat lighting would be to implement expensive ambient occlusion passes ingame. AO is already a feature when you turn post processing up but isn't very noticeable. Unfortunately, I think even with AO more prominent, it would potentially bleed too much into other areas of the game which could cause further unrealism. It looks as tho the best course of action to my knowledge would be to improve the tree texture to be more like Arma2 (texture in the shadow depth). Only bohemia would know whether shifting lighting conditions or whatever would help improve it. There was a mod created by mikebart for Arma2 which made the trees more volumetric at no extra fps cost. He claims that it actually improves performance and from a visual standpoint, looks superior to Arma's typical flat look. To have volumetric trees adds quite a significant amount of depth to the scene. Worth a look: http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9701 mikebart's system looks probably to be the more promising answer if possible. I'm including a screenshot of early morning light at 6am demonstrating the nice bump effects on the ground texture but the severe lack of any contrast from the forest. As the sun is located to the direct left of the image, the trees should feature a shadow to their right side. This may be asking too much for far distant trees which are likely very simple and don't contain enough geometry to be shaded, but for at least near to mid range trees, something perhaps worth considering. EDIT: Just tried mikebart's trees on Stratis.     It may well have been added to the tracker but I felt it warranted some discussion and demonstrations which might be lost in a ticket. This is also open to other graphical / aesthetic issues people may have. Like, when partly overcast, the land doesn't adjust to let in more light. Partly and fully overcast offer the same lighting conditions.
  7. I'm opening a thread to discuss some of the visual shortfalls of Arma 3. In particular, the current trees on Stratis. From the first time running the game, it was immediately evident that the trees appeared flat and lacklustre in the mid range and beyond. Included are screenshots of trees from Chernarus, Takistan and Stratis at the same time of day, same weather conditions (100% bad weather), near maximum graphical settings and running within Arma3. From what can be seen, the lighting conditions vary somewhat between the Arma2 maps and Arma3. Stratis is significantly darker when under a full overcast. In fact, it's still very dark even when partly overcast which looks odd. The level of light coming through of course affects the depth of trees due to lack of shadow contrast but even when in daylight, the mid-level trees are still flat as seen in the third Stratis screenshot. This isn't the case with Arma2 trees which are textured as such to appear full at a distance. I'd like to know whether BI are planning to fix this issue of flatness in their current vegetation. I love the rest but am just curious how something as important as trees to an environment could be worse than previous.     Oddly I can't find a CBA_A2 version exactly. Just a CBA which requires 'Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead Beta patch' as seen here: http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=6231 I've tested it as just a pilot in a AH-9 flying around the island with no issues. Same with flying an F-35 from Arma2. I'm beginning to suspect there is an issue with the Somato area in particular as I've mentioned before, the same tests but located to the north east ran without fault.

    I should have mentioned that I've attempted launching the same scenario running CBA_A3. CBA_OA and both together multiple times so it would have come up in the same rpt. After pasting the entire RPT into my response the page crashed. Likely due to the sheer volume of text which is why I summarised it. For the moment, will need to wait for someone to have a proper look into this issue as nothing currently works to achieve a stable experience within Sahrani. Arma 2 maps on the other hand work perfectly thus far. From what I can determine, the other errors listed refer to the removed UI pbo's from the Arma2 addons directory to be compatible with Arma3. And of course the CA_Anims_Char would be a result of Arma3 using different animations and so Arma2 anims were removed to ensure stability. Thank you again Gunter for guiding me through this. Is a little sad at this point to give up and wait for a future solution. (Included the just then generated from scratch report using all seen addons with same 'get in and move' waypoint for riflemen and open ural CDF) - summarised again as original was 600,000 characters     Cheers for the link Gunter. Seems the exact same issue remains with this version of Sahrani as well. I'm including the RPT file to be viewed for errors. So anyone else can recreate it, here is a description of the scenario: Created Blufor rifle squad > Created empty Ural open CDF > Placed waypoint for rifle squad to 'Get in' Ural and then 'Get out' at destination > Units were placed 100m east of Somato on the road near the vineyard > Destination waypoint placed south near Cayo on road. As soon as the squad enters to vehicle it crashes. Or alternatively, I've found that it crashes ~30 seconds in even if they haven't mounted. Oddly this seems to be an error that occurs in this one area of the map as I've attempted the same scenario near Bagango with far more AI mounting and dismounting the same vehicle without any issues at all. I've had to summarise the error report as was rather huge. Grabbed snapshots from all the major chunks of errors which would mostly repeat forever.     So I've managed to successfully load the Arma1 map of Sarhani into the Alpha with the help of CAA1 and the new CBA. Unfortunately there seems to be an instability issue with the AI which I'm hoping someone could help on? For instance, setting a group of riflemen to mount an open Ural will CTD the game with the final man entering the truck. I've tested with regular AI on AI engagements in random towns and results vary from quick crashes to fight-nearly-over then crash. Have also had a few crashes when getting some Ifrits to drive around. It's kinda unpredictable at times as I've had AI load up a truck and drive 200m just fine. Seems like if they load up just east of Somato, it's a guaranteed crash. Got a mate to test this and same result. Any thoughts?

    two differend particle systhems in game ??

    Overall the particle system in Arma feels dated. Needs an update to reflect realism some more. Would be nice if natively it had smoke tower a lot higher and maintained a longer presence... And perhaps add an option in video settings for it? But on topic, the particle system is one and the same. They simply added an image for smoke and left it blank for dust if that makes sense.
