How many of us have ever tried making addon?

Recommended Posts

So after watching this topic, I deciced to ask this question from community, so that we could see that how many of us know about addon making and how hard work it is.

Me, myself, have made few models and somekinda textures and I'm, whenever I have time, trying to learn more. I have a lot of ideas adout addons, but I won't ask them here, 'cos I'm gonna try to make them myself.

So please answer, let everybody know... smile_o.gif

Yepster, I've tried. Stopped when Oxygen decided not to accept my textures.

I have made some expiremental models. Yesh, it's a pain in the ass. Though configs are even worse, me thinks.

Hmmm.... rock.gif

I seem to be the only one so far that has answered no. I have tried config editing though, and even thats is frustrating and time consuming. I can't begin to imagine how it is with modelling, texturing etc.... crazy_o.gif

My current project has taken 9 months so far. There's a link to it on our forums (PUKF) if anyone's interested - 'BennyBoy's Scorpion' in the Off Topic section. Couldnt be bothered to link directly.

I think the people who have not tried it (in any serious attempt) will not vote, simply becuase then it will be proven that arguements made don't have a leg to stand on.

Ive voted yes, I did try making an addon once... The thing is i found it too damn frustrating and time consuming just to make a basic shap (a box) with all the Lods and config ect..

Personally i found it too difficult, too time consuming, and too complicated to make addons so i havnt botherd to attempt again.

On the other hand i find making Island addons much much more user friendly, less compicated and much more enjoyble.

Although my main talents are mission making and scripting.

...how hard work it is you say? *trying to scratch back while comfortably strapped in straitjacket*

In retrospect I wouldn't come near the pitfalls of "Oxygen", the treacherous dungeons of "Config.cpp", the backstabbing witch of "binarize", the luring temptress "of gizmo-mapping", the evil...you get the pic...

Advice to beginners: Don't do it. It's not worth it.  blues.gif

Not that I'm normally one to go against the grain, but I find making addons to be quite relaxing (apart from when you get a damn 'encountered ";" instead of "}" error" in a config.cpp that you just cannot trace). Granted, addon-making can be frustrating, but it all depends on your attitude towards the whole process. If you grab O2 and notepad, and expect to make a complicated addon in 5 minutes, you're going to be greatly disappointed. If however you see the bigger picture and understand the many levels of processes involved - the modelling, the config writing, the testing, the tweaking etc. and make allowances for these seperate phases, the whole experience is much more enjoyable. I, like many other addon-makers, do it not for money nor fame, but for the fun of doing it.

I couldn't express this better.

and that is exactly what i would say smile_o.gif

Also the question is wrong. It should have read "Who has ever completed an addon, tutorials not included", because this way people that have made a box in O2 will count themselves as addonmakers.

Also, from the poll results uptil now, I can conclude that all mods should have been completed already as there are so many addonmakers around rock.gif

there is plenty of addonmakers

some of them are talented some of them arent

some of them are workaholics and some arent

is it so strange ?

this topic is aimed to let ppl know that making a mod is not easy task

we know that

we also know that "playng" with own fans, selling them bullshit is not nice thing to do

but hey :-) it shouldnt bother you LtHunter, if i remember good addonmakers are making addons for themselfs in first place ? and for fun ?

so who needs fans ? ;-)

After reading bresseb's and col.klink's tutorials i made a De Havilland Mosquito and a Supermarine S5 which are ingame but in basic alpha stage, the thing is that they are far from finished and will most likely never see the light of day 'cos i suck in all aspects of addon making and simply dont have skill (cockpits and textures are evil) or the time to learn more about it. Funnily enough, even if stressed out by my ignorance on the subject, i found addon making to be an extremely satisfying hobby.

A big Thank You to all addonmakers, may you live long and breed happily ever after.

I've tried on several occasions. It's bloody hard.

yep.

I stick to missionmaking. it's less rewarded by the community, but I do it for my squad smile_o.gif .

I tried making some addons, but after completing some I was just thinking... "wasn't this made before?" , and it has been hybernating on my HD since.

I tried animating (poor russian crewmember) , but found that what I wanted to do with it could not be done (not until aras / ofp2 atleast ; animating vehicles)

etc etc. Missionmaking is something I enjoy the most.

OFP Addon making is a tricky subject for several reasons.

1. It is modible unlike any other app to-date. That's a +

2. It lacks docs, serious tools (O2 may be easy but it's like painting with your feet), pluggins, exporters. That's a -

So, in order to make sth amazing, you must poses stamina, patience, talent obviously and lots and lots of guts.

I tryed O2 before and got frustrated with problems even before I had a chance to make a simple square.

Now I'm trying when I'm in the mood and when RL give me chance, but texturing I really find it a lot easyer. I love Photoshop, but I know I haven't discovered or learned to use the full potential of it, and retexturing something to experiment and learn, and find that it actually works well in game, that's more reward than I was expecting.

I don't know if I'll ever finish an addon, and I'm not in a rush to do so because I consider mission making more important, but the same thing gos to mission making, because RL is more important.

One of my biggest problems is other peoples addons. They are too bloody good and I just expend valuable time playing with them. I think that I should set certain days for playing and certain days for editing biggrin_o.gif  and then OFP would stop being fun crazy_o.gif I don't really have that much time for OFP. sad_o.gif

Regards.

@CERO.
