Friedchiken 0 Posted October 27, 2004 Whenever the games media ever talks about Rainbow Six as the original tactical shooter, I wonder if they were paying attention to one game that came out the same year as DOOM. *Stands on Soap-Box I'm talking about Seal Team (1993), a wargame that faithfully recreated the SEAL's experience in Vietnam. Â You could do so many things in that game: Â Take prisoners, set demolitions, call support, etc. Â IMO, Seal Team is now even more fun than Rainbow Six 3 in terms of single player. Â I was a wee child back when it was released but I can say now that Seal Team is still one of the most realistic experiences among games. I just wonder why the game didn't make a serious impact at its time or even now. Maybe I'm making too big a deal of the gaming press but what do you guys think? Tovarish 0 Posted October 27, 2004 I remember it, great fun.You could call in air support from Hueys or Broncos, there were Swift boats, you could ambush enemy boats, many different weapons to choose from, and I loved that you could take prisioners....till the one time that a few Viet Congs I had taken prisioner somehow opened fire on me again - from that point on I took no prisioners. John C Flett 0 Posted October 27, 2004 I remember it as being kind of buggy and limited by the technology but, yes, it had a lot to offer and it was years ahead of its time. I especially remember the shouting in Vietnamese and those damn trip wires. Thing about Rainbow is it was the first PC tactical shooter to be a hit and as so often its money that counts. Take consolation in the fact that other people still remember Seal Team.
SpongeBob 0 Posted October 27, 2004 Wish there was a way to play that game now, I still have the book and all the disks that came with it, but I can't get the game to run. I wonder if the BIS team played this game in the day and inspired them to make OFP.
Placebo 29 Posted October 29, 2004 I think you'll find most mature gamers from the Opf community have fond memories of Seal Team, hell old ones like me have fond memories of Airborne Ranger and Midwinter which also had pre-Opf opf elements
hellfish6 7 Posted October 29, 2004 I remember hearing about that game, but I didn't have much interest in it. Of course, I was only about 15 at the time, and a complete idiot.
Akira 0 Posted October 29, 2004 Then I got some good news for you: One should always check Underdogs for games that have been released into the public domain or copyrights have expired. You can find all kinds of games on there.
hardrock 1 Posted October 29, 2004 hmmm . . . now I come to think of it . . . I was only 6 at this time, and I didn't show much interest either <s>On which platform was it based?</s> edit: oh you posted a link. Does it support DirectX 9?
Blake 0 Posted October 29, 2004 Yeah Seal Team was great, I remember finally getting it to run smoothly on 486DX2-66. Midwinter was another great game, so was Damocles on Amiga where you travel several planets in 3d and utilizing different vehicles. Same type of game was Armour-Geddon from Psygnosis. I also loved Carrier Command. Another rather forgotten Amiga game was Hunter where yould use helicopter, boats and cars in 3d environment - kind of distant forerunner to what is now possible in OFP. Acecombat 0 Posted October 29, 2004 Quote[/b] ]and a complete idiot. Hellfish this is debatable still And i think the Marek clearly mentions seal team (1993) as an inspiration for OFP along with another tank? (m1 platoon) game i remember it was listed in that PC gamezone mag article.

You can find all kinds of games on there. I know that site. It's just that I wanted to ask Hellfish whether it was ok to post it. (As you see, I'm really lazy online. Also, do we consider abandonware OK? I mean there is no way to make money off of it now.) Ok, now I use the program called DosBox and it runs Seal Team fairly well on XP. lemme link it. About the prisoners: They are supposed to backstab you when you guys are preoccupied.  That why Seal Team has one of the greatest inventory options - Handcuffs  No, really, I had a great adrenaline rush after seeing those in the equip screen. And the best, it runs under XP! MfG Lee
Akira 0 Posted October 29, 2004 I think it is ok, as it is abandonware and games who's copyrights no longer apply, thus making them public domain (ie legal to post the whole game). It's not warez. That site is really good about putting things up, but also of taking things down. They had Sid Meiers Pirates up for awhile, but as soon as the announced a new Pirates, and I assume the licensing was renewed, it was taken down from the site. EDIT: There is a great game on there based on a PnP game called Twilight:2000. One of the greatest DnD style games ever. I wish someone would make a new Twilight:2000 mod or game OFP style. ShadowY 0 Posted October 30, 2004 Panzer General I still play it sometimes, how addictive this game was\still is Fight your way from Poland to Washington in the campaign. For free, so go d\l it
Akira 0 Posted October 30, 2004 In the hopes that someone will make a OFP version of Twilight:2000 here is the game: I used to play it a lot (the PnP version). I remember it was interesting because you had different nationalities, and different skills. Download the game and just go through the character generation and you will see what I mean. The video game had only a portion of what was possible in making your characters.
sputnik monroe 102 Posted October 30, 2004 Screenshots? Does it run completely fine under XP?
Akira 0 Posted October 30, 2004 Screenshots?Does it run completely fine under XP? No screenshots and its 1992 so don't expect 3D goodness. But it will run under XP if you open it in a DOS window....but for some reason....it doesn't SAVE the game. I played it on a laptop and kept the laptop and game running for a week to mess around with it. Which is why I want someone to make an OFP version
DracoPaladore 0 Posted October 30, 2004 Holy shiznit! Descent Freespace 2 is full and avaliable! I used to play the demo alot, but never could find it!
Akira 0 Posted October 30, 2004 Holy shiznit! Descent Freespace 2 is full and avaliable!I used to play the demo alot, but never could find it! They also have full Falcon 4.0 which I believe was recently released. I downloaded it but never messed around with it. EDIT: Should also note that for older games that they think are really good but hard to find now (and aren't released), they usually have a link to buy the game
joltan 0 Posted October 30, 2004 Ah, nice to see dosbox has improved quite a bit. I had some problems when I tried Seal Team before, but now it's playble: I think I might have to raise the simulation cycles a bit more, tho. Good find!
kegetys 2 Posted October 30, 2004 I think it is ok, as it is abandonware and games who's copyrights no longer apply, thus making them public domain (ie legal to post the whole game). It's not warez. Abandonware means games that are old, that you usually cant find from stores anymore. I dont think you can find any computer games that would be old enough for the copyrights to have expired(In pretty much all countries it takes a very long time, ie. 70 years or so for the copyrights to expire.), and thus most of the abandonware games are indeed still illegal to distribute. Most of the copyright holders don't care though, or dont even exist anymore as a company to care...
Placebo 29 Posted October 30, 2004 Abandonware legally is at best a gray area, at worst as illegal as other "warez". It has been said before that posting links to such things on these forums is not on, I'm tempted to give a warning level to everyone who has posted a link making me have to edit their post
