Warin 0 Posted September 29, 2003 Gamespy has an article today about the 25 most under rated games of all time. They put OFP at 21 on the list of the most under rated games of all time. I totally agree with them. the game was not properly promoted in the US, and as such it is the realm of die hard fans like us, rather than having wider acceptance among gamers. I know that i get a blank stare still when I talk about Flashpoint with people. And I have turned at least 4-5 people onto the game here just by telling them how cool it is and suggesting the GOTY pack. Can we hope that OFP2 will get the promotion and hype that OFP1 deserved and didnt get?

NurEinMensch 0 Posted September 29, 2003 From a "die hard fan" pov it's rather good not to have everyone and his grandma play this game. Best example is a certain HL mod that used to be interesting until it suddenly was mainstream. On the other hand it's clear from a developer point of view you want to sell what you make to as many people as possible. So go ahead and promote OFP2 as much as you wish (I'm generous today eh) as long as you don't pull a HL2.
The Frenchman 0 Posted September 29, 2003 Well it is us, the die hard fan's job to covert BF1942 kiddies into OFP extremist, where every game looks like shite. I converted a kid to Empire Earth and I am bound to convert someone to OFP!
Jester983 0 Posted September 29, 2003 yea i got that daily gamespy newsletter and i read that. And i too agree. I wish the promotion in the US would've been better. Im just glad i got it how i got it.
edc 0 Posted September 29, 2003 Maybe we'll have to stop calling gamespy, gayspy . Though, OFP should be the #1 under-rated game IMO
Major Fubar 0 Posted September 30, 2003 Interesting article...but almost unreadable from the popups and overlay ads. Â
Bluesman 0 Posted September 30, 2003 You can close those ads with the "close" button. I personally think gamespy.s ad policy is better than many other game sites. Plus more important; They have ads that actually interest many gamers instead of totally irrelevant crap that most popup ads have on other sites (or worse like Gator popup). Plus they are free and with descent content at that. I agree that OFP is underrated but I also think that OFP were one of those games that grew with age thanks to the fantastic mod community it has. When people visit sites like ofp.info and see the steady flow of cool add-ons they probably think about getting this game. BM
sanctuary 19 Posted September 30, 2003 Well, you can always disable Active Scripting to prevent any pops up to appear (and enable it again when browsing a website that use it for its navigation). That way, no need of any pop-up killer program. One of the most underrated game in the RTS category was Conquer Frontier Wars , a great RTS in my opinion with good AI and tactic possibilities , but not helped very well by its editor ubi soft (lack of) marketing department , the developers (FeverPitch Studios) even left ubi soft edition after that , then they were bought by Warthog and became Warthog Texas. Major Fubar 0 Posted September 30, 2003 You can close those ads with the "close" button. *smacks forehead* Of course, why didn't I think of that... When I'm browsing at work and trying to be somewhat discreet about what sites I am surfing the last thing I need is some giant popup with a Gamespy logo on it...and those overlay ads really, really piss me off, no matter what their content. Anyway, Sanctuary, thanks for the suggestions. So now, back ontopic: In strategy games, I think the Warlords series is vastly underrated. The thing that makes Warlords so great it that it is turn based (as opposed to real time), allowing for more strategy than spasmodic Tetris-like button clicking. I have managed to acquire the entire series up to date (1, 2 & 3 including expansions), but the first two are DOS based, which makes them difficult to play on my Win XP system...good news is Warlords 2 is soon coming out for Pocket PC, which will be playable on desktops, and has been developed under an NT based platform, so it will run on Win XP. Â The other great advantage of turn based games is that you can play MP on one PC...hotseat play. Not so much of an issue now with every man and his dog being on the internet and/or on a LAN, but way back when the first was released (1993, I think) it was a BIG selling feature. When Warlords released the Battlecry series (1&2), they went real time, and I totally lost interest (just another Age of Empires/CAC clone IMHO), but they are back on track with Warlords 4, to be released later this year. Â [edit]For anyone interested, you can download Warlords and Warlords 2 from this site http://www.warlorders.com/ , modified to run under all Win OS. They are there with the game makers approval, so I'm not advocating warez [/edit]
The Frenchman 0 Posted September 30, 2003 totally irrelevant crap that most popup ads have on other sites (or worse like Gator popup). I got a p0rn pop up from visiting this site before.
Bluesman 0 Posted September 30, 2003 I understand your concern Fubar but it's either ads or pay to read content nowadays. Even gamershell has resorted to ads nowadays. Cool about Warlords for PocketPC. I wonder if another classic(also underrated) Master of Magic is being done for PocketPC as well? If so then I will go buy one soon . toadlife 3 Posted September 30, 2003 The article was pretty good. You guys wouldn't have to complain about pop-ups and banners if you would use a real web browser.
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted September 30, 2003 And just when Gamespy makes a good call, they proceed to shoot themselves in the foot by ranking Codename: Eagle ahead of OFP on their list. That game was underrated in the sense that while most reviewers gave it 2/10 or 1/5, it really deserved more like 4/10 and 2/5. Coincidentally, it's BF1942's (a title conspicuously absent from their list of overrated games) predecessor, so you can guess how bad it had to be for people to not like that style of play. Judge Rabbi 0 Posted October 1, 2003 Codename Eagle was fun at times, although the control system is poor. OPF underated? I thought this game sold over 1 million copies! That can't be really underated...until I found the amount sold in America. So...most of the copies were sold in Europe and in the Eastern Europe! Wow, thats a suprise.
Dwarden 1125 Posted October 2, 2003 if i'm coorrect OFP sold over 2.5 million of copies , some more were RH and another 1+ was Resistance ... strange is one thing, MORE PLAYERS FOR MP NEEDED lol and toad, for these who can't use real browser , there is small heal named MyIE2
Badgerboy 0 Posted October 2, 2003 I agree with their stance on Grim Fandango. Please tell me everyone on this forum has played it. Genius.....
kegetys 2 Posted October 2, 2003 Looks like System Shock will be quite high on that list ;) Or if it won't be there at all, then all credibility from Gamespy will be lost :P
RED 0 Posted October 2, 2003 I couldn't agree more with Planescape: Torment being on the list, this game got me hooked on RPGs. Yeah I reckon system shock will be high up on the list too Kegetys. RED

Winters 1 Posted October 2, 2003 OFP sadly, got no promotion in the US, i literally stumbled onto the game at EB Games and the only reason i bought it was because it took place in 1985, the year i joined the US Army. I have been a staunch advocate of OFP ever since, and if i can meet some friends who have money to spend maybe i can help boost the sales a bit
DangerTooTH 0 Posted October 2, 2003 In the states, we had an absolutely awful review from PC Gamer mag, giving it a 70%, right around the same time that they gave a dubious 93% to Ghost Recon. In the OFP review, they said don't buy OFP. Wait next month for GR(that was roughly the gist of it). And then the GR review wasn't even a review at all. Just a fantasy story about being a soldier. Listen up, pukes! You wanna be a soldier, right? Get off yer butt and get this game!(and that was roughly the gist of that one). Their motives were highly questionable, as their extreme bias was apparent(and I like GR too, but 70% to 93%...cmon!). The OFP review stated that the game didn't know which way it was going. First you're a foot soldier, then you jump in a tank and you're a tank commander? Too disorienting. And the reticle moves about on your screen like it's an auto-aim reticle. Auto-aim sucks. Sorry if I don't remember all the facts correctly(paraphrasing at best), but at the time it made everyone I know absolutely furious, we dropped our subscriptions immediately, and considered them as being payed off(or coerced) by UBI. If anyone here remembers the debacle, and recalls the 2 articles, you know there was no other way to see it. Opinions are opinions, but this was over the top. They probably killed alot of OFP's US sales with that nonsense. GR = good OFP = great
