Personally I can't see how any comparison in a mature discussion can be deemed as flamebaiting. Simply disregarding things is easy and disagreeing aswell, and I can see why bn880 decided to draw a parallel between the current situation in Israel and what happened under Hitler's regime, although not as drastic and appauling, it is comparable.

Anyhoo... To my question!

This question is indeed related to the incident with bn880 and the PR handed out, here goes;

What do moderatorors consider debating technique, and what do moderators consider "flamebaiting" ? Sometimes, as said the only way to get your point across is to actually draw a parallel, no matter how exaggerated it may be. Do you take the context into account before laying down the law?

Thank you for your time smile_o.gif

EDIT: Remade one of my sentences to be much better, and more correct.

it's easier to say that making accusations without any substantiated proof is a good example of flaming/flame baiting.

an example would be:

<insert name of country> is the best because <insert some nationalistic crap>

which has absolutely no basis and is not a good contribution.

if only way to get the point across is drawing parallel, then perm banning would be another way. just becuase something is same in many aspects doesn't necessarily make it equal as the other. for example, an increase in gas price does not mean either supply is decreasing or demand is increasing. both events can lead to increase in gas price, and it's upto thorough analysis of each to see what really happend.

unfortunately it is with deep regret that humans on general level do not have requisite for such, and we keep getting idiots, in all sides.

a good argument would be relying on logical analysis of each point, without resorting to emotional element, or provoking it.

i can't tell you how many idiots from this side of the pond were kicked out of this forum for their decision to avoid posting stupid/flamatory remarks, but same goes for the other side too. It seems like anti-US is the "truth" but in fact they are blinded just as "anti-old europe" people, and act just like them.

Debating (IMO) = calmly and politely discussing a topic whether pro or con within the confines of forum rules.

With regard to the definition of flaming and flame baiting there's a reasonably good and valid description about each at http://www.wordiq.com/.

Often the situation is a grey one at which point a moderator uses his/her best possible judgment, sometimes resulting in upsetting one or more with the decision but such is life.

Thank you for the replies and clearing things up, but I have another follow-up-question loosely related to the previous one:

Sometimes my skills in using the English language fail me (quite often really) and I have to resort to clumsy analogies and other such things. It is quite possible that you have seen one of these bad analogies / clumsy sentences loitering around a few of the forums threads, and from that you can gather that my English is less than picture perfect.

I imagine linguistical difficulties is another "grey zone" as most of the moderators seem to be native English speakers whilst many of the forumites are not. But really, how do moderators cope with linguinal barriers and how does moderators really tell the difference between intentional flames/flame baits and accidental ones?

EDIT: Also, sorry for askin such complex questions. Bear with me smile_o.gif

Oh come on... My english sucks - badly. I mean, im happy if i understand myself. And i do belive that i can avoid flaiming others. And if i would start flaming people (i reckon i did that once ages ago in the ME thread) it wouldnt be because of my language barriers. :o)

Thanks for your understanding GoOB

Personally I think cultural differences are more of an issue with what's sonidered flaming than language barriers. For example I remember when someone said "what are you smoking?" which really really drove the target person up the wall (another metaphore). While coming from the US saying something like that is not such a bad thing, to the target person from abroad it sounded pretty nasty. tounge_o.gif

As always it's down to trying to use our best judgment in each situation, we've had instances in the past where a member has flamed and their lack of English as a 1st language has been a factor so there's been a dialogue between member and moderator to try to make sure that the member understands the situation with regard to what's right and wrong so they can ensure it doesn't happen in the future smile_o.gif

I think he is leaching off Avon and transfering posts from all those "1 post" members over to him biggrin_o.gif

Think about it logically. For every punishable spam message she writes, she loses a few hundred posts and Ralph gains one. Now combine this with the Suggestion thread in the OFP2 section. "This has already been suggested. WHACK! This has already been suggested. WHACK!" tounge_o.gif

speaking of m21man's OFP2 section, I'd like to take this chance to say that 4 month rule is exception for suggestion forum, as long as it's not spam.
