Caring about the Player

The problem with boot camp is that it requires a conscious effort for the player to run the mission in order to learn. I think the general idea currently being mooted is that this information is presented in the first couple of missions in the campaign. In a way that doesn't alienate/bore previous users.

that is hard to do. I would much rather prefer the tutorial outside the campaign, or skipable at the very least

The first thing the player sees after installing & running ArmA should be a big fat option "MIL TRAINING" in the menu tbh.

In its current form ppl seem to jump right into MP and try to join addon-ridden servers lol. ;)

Would say an additional training campaign were one can get all the basics + advanced stuff as an character of the main campaign. So the player will get into the story even if he is just training / practicise SP missions. Just add some more life into those mission instead of simple + uninspired "got there", "do that", "follow the white rabbit"...

Maybe even build somekind of friendship or challenges within the group/team.

Make the player feel that he is a part of something good & great. But please don't overdo it with national pride/patriotism and this odd/stupid yelling and shouting.

How about giving them a target and some random equipment to fulfill the mission? That would take the learning effect a bit further i guess, thinking out of the box & adapting etc.

How about a small Training campaign (one or two Missions) Viewed from the Point of some greek guerillas on Limnos? That way the player could be intruduced to everything and it would have a link to the Story.

Players may find the overly complex game of moving around, pointing and shooting very confusing so here are suggestions that will help caring about the Player.

Consider them seriously, BIS:

- add the red 'incoming fire' markers. Trying to find where shots are coming from by using ears and eyes may be very confusing for the Player

- add health regen and more health. Getting killed with 2 shots may be very confusing for the Player

- remove all AI squad commands but "follow me" and "stay here". Nobody uses other commands anyway and the sheer amount of stuff you can do with them may be very confusing for the Player

- add the sticky cover making you invulnerable like in next-gen games. Having to find a suitable cover all on your own is unrealistic and may be very confusing for the Player

- fix the damn guns. Having your barrel pointing at a wall with bullets hitting it instead of flying out of the targetting reticle may be very confusing for the Player

- add a minimap showing where all units near you are. A game requiring attention and situational awareness may be very confusing to the Player

- fix AI seeing through the concealment. Firing at AI and then hiding behind the bush won't stop AI's bullets and that may be very confusing for the Player

We all know that for the past 10 years ArmA didn't try to cater to Players and only 3.5 robots with lighting reflexes were able to play it, but it's time to change that BIS.

Incoming fire markers-maybe on some difficulty level lower than recruit (civilian difficulty level?)

Health regen-why would you need medics at all?

Remove AI squad command but stay and follow-no way,but the current command system needs to be easyer to use.

Sticky cover-Mafia II in ArmA?

Fix the guns-no guns need fixin',use sights (right click or numpad 0)

add a minimap-are you kidding me:p

fix AI seeing trough bushes-i agree.

:V At least try to look as if you´re making a point. I´ve never been talking about dumbing the game down. Everything you describe is exactly doing that... I realize you´re trying to be sarcastic, but to attack a point that on the whole hasn´t evenn been made makes you look like a ponce. Sorry to say...

Some additional helpers may or may not be worth considering. But in general, the gameplay I think can stay the same. New people just need to be introduced to it in such a manner that they don´t get frustrated by it, or run out of patience for the game. We only have one life, and people´s time is precious. I have wasted a lot of time back when I got into OFP, just learning its ropes.

I was in school back then, so I -did- have the time. Now, I don´t anymore, so I also don´t want to spend my time teaching people who want to play with me how to play the game without breaking it, and how to play it so it turns from dying-every-two-seconds frustration to dying-every-two-minutes fun.

to me smoother and more intuitive are the key words to making arma2 more accessible to new players.

making the world behave like you'd expect and not having to find work arounds.

better context menus for interactions and commands - with things the situation calls for made easy to find like: take cover, take cover behind(or in) X, fall in, retreat and fire, GTO of there, advance, advance and fire, move up and attack as a squad, assault that X, wait until I shoot, etc.

more intuitive way of giving commands (no idea how - that's a big and tough task). renaming of commands - advance could rather be called take point. Veterans of BIS probably wont stay confused as they were smart enough to learn how it works in the first place.

AI behaving more like you'd expect when under fire and when not under fire. AI working as a team a bit more with fire and manouever - staying under cover, sending out distractions, flanking, actively suppressing. AI now take cover pretty damn well - so BIS is working on better AI.

Better and more natural animation system also but i think something has been mentioned about that as well. like to mention that i find movement speed

there's always been basic training missions in bis games afair. maybe showing them off at top of menu before campaign entry (but not preventing playing the game) could help like mentioned above.

IMHO OFP was great cause you started as a just another soldier in a bigger conflict, and you learned fast as there was action but there also was lenience cause if you stuffed up, one of the AI probably had your back anyway.

The OFP way of learning as you fought was excellent. Especially since at the start of the campaign the war hadn't even started, you were taught the basic mechanics, and then learned to command troops as you were promoted. I get the feeling Arma 3 is going to start at the deep end, if the current back story is anything to go by. So comprehensive tutorials have to be the way to go. I agree with InstaGoat, I haven't got the time to spend my days learning the game anymore as I did back in school.

It'd also cut down on the new guys posting for help about the most basic things.

'How do I do this?'

'Oh that's easy, just play through section 5 on the armour tutorial, talks you straight through it.'

I'm not sure if you guys realise but... a lot of the arma serie "vets" sound very smug and condescending... a bit like a bunch of old peoples watching the youngsters do things they can't understand.

I'm one of those oldies myself, and sadly i hardly play OFP/Arma anymore because, even if i love the game, this game has a real problem at giving it back.

Making the mission of your dream is atrocious, the engine and editor is entirely geared toward macro gestion and because of this, there is no way to orchestrate any kind of mini events or making the player feel he lived something special.

In the end i'm mostly playing Team Fortress 2...

I really want to play Arma, i bought every DLCs and even considered getting a VBS2 license.

But yeah Arma is a but like this cute but vicious animal, you want to hug it and it claw at your face.

What and thats how the game has survived 10 yrs while while every other 'next gen' shooter has been forgoten inside of 18 months.

Typing on a phone is horrible so ill keep it short

Opf took about 15-20 missions before giving us complete control and throwing us in the deep. Arma2 took about 3 before lettinf you figure out everything yourself,includimf essential thinfs like commanding

NeMeSiS is right. With OFP, it eased the player in, but in the ArmA campaigns and missions, you are just thrown in a dark room with no light.

The PC gamer article hinted at even BI studio members not getting the game when they were faced with it for the first time. Arma is a pretty peculiar breed of game, and nothing will prepare you for it, is the message of that as far as I can see it. People who say it´s easy and that this is not an area BIS should pay attention to are not looking at it objectively.

I just hope that we´ll also get external tutorials again for the more advanced stuff. Maybe some tactics videos explaining how to run a squad, sort of like the training videos in the old longbow and armored fist games?
