Prydain 1 Posted December 29, 2010 Rented it on iTunes. American soldiers in a sort-of pointless FOB getting killed... meh. By extension it tells the story of Afghanistan, a fruitless attempt to bring things westerners value to a country that has and wants nothing but this story has been told before over and over. binkster 0 Posted December 29, 2010 I watched it on netflix. Which the FOB was not pointless but to stabalize that area for a road being constructed. There is no story its just basically there day to day lifes at the FOB which they built a fire base and named it after their medic "Restrepo" who was killed. I believe they said around 60% to 70% of all bombs dropped in Afghanistan was in that area. Very touching documentary because you cant help to feel sorry for the soldiers but at the same time you see innocent civilians including children being bombed and its very sad. jblackrupert 14 Posted April 22, 2011 (edited) After that episode in Iraq with those guys taken out by the Apaches a few months ago you'd think the press guys would be extremely careful especially if you are imbedding yourself with the weaker side. Those guys in in Iraq were begging for trouble imbedding with insurgants and dressing in the same style of clothes with no PRESS markings. I'm talking about being shoulder to shoulder imbedded with Insurgents or in this case the Rebels who despite UN air support are like it or not the little guys untrained, ill equipped amateurs. Ya you get great upclose footage but when their opponent brings the rain you're gonna regret it. The video of that press team in Iraq being lit up by Apaches it proof of that. The Apache pilots in that case were not at falult, the press guys were standing next to guys with at least 1 RPG and everyone else armed with AK's clearly trying to ambush the marines in the area. I think we called the future Taliban "Freedom fighters" during Russia's little tour of Afghanistan...... In 10....20 years will we be dealing with this new crop of "freedom fighters" who decide they want to go to war against the west once they gain power. You'd have to blind not to see the guy carrying an RPG. it's visible in the early parts of the footage when they were in the open area. They were observed scoping out nearby Marines and the camera man was hiding behind walls beside them taking shots of the marines with a long lens camera. Assuming for second he was fearfull of kidnapping... The large camera he's holding with any extra gear would mark him as press to any potential kidnappers on the ground. It was that behavior and the no PRESS markets that got the apaches called in. You walk like a duck, quack like a duck, duck hunters are going to take notice Also. The same goes for war., dress appropriately for the occasion or stay home. Al-jazeera is in a competion with Al Arabiya. The networks in Europe and North America and craving closer, more grittier stuff. Photographers and journalists get paid BIG dollars to provide up close and personal footage of events like wars the closer you get, the bloodier more exciting the picture, the more money you get. These guys took huge risks and lost. Sometimes the quest for money overrides common sense. Not saying that about the guys in Libya but the boys in Iraq made some seriously bad choices.
