walker 0 Posted December 22, 2010 (edited) Hi all As some of you may have noticed the leading IP Phone network, Skype, is down for Millions of its users across the world. Skype Service Disrupted WorldwideBy: Sara Yin 12.22.2010 Has Murphy's Law gone into effect at Skype? Just one day after two-month CEO Tony Bates talked up Skype's expansion plans at MercuryNews.com, the VoIP service went down this morning. "We are currently investigating and we're sorry for the disruption to our users conversations. Our engineers and site operations team are working non-stop to get things back to normal. Please continue to follow @skype on Twitter for updates," a spokeswoman for Skype told PCMag. This morning, Skype had tweeted, "Some of you may have problems signing in to Skype – we're investigating, and we're sorry for the disruption to your conversations." ... http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2374651,00.asp As always follow the link to the original text in full Like many we use its video phone capability to get together with distant family members over the holidays, hope it is fixed soon. As we begin to rely on the facilities of the cloud more outages of this kind can for some people and businesses be serious events. Hans Ludwig 0 Posted December 23, 2010 Skype sucks. This is the perfect time to check for alternatives. ;) Or one could buy vent/TS server.
PuFu 4600 Posted December 23, 2010 (edited) Or one could buy vent/TS server. It is not the same. My clan owns a TS3 server (on our own server - nothing rented or that sort). I still use skype daily for IM rather than voice. I love it since i can use it from multiple locations (home, work, iphone etc), and it saves all my conversations "server" side. Deadfast 43 Posted December 23, 2010 ...it saves all my conversations server side. Huh? There are no servers in peer-to-peer.
PuFu 4600 Posted December 23, 2010 yeah, i know there is no server as such, but what i mean by "server" is that i have all the previous conversations no matter from where i connect.

walker 0 Posted December 23, 2010 Hi all Up and running for me now again. I was one of the earliest users of Skype when there were less than 200 thousand. So far I have not found a product as good as Skype, there is only one that competes on price and that is an open source product which suffers from the usual interface and functionality problems that seem to plague so many Open Source projects. I can use it no problem but my family members and many of my friends would never fathom it. I would just end up being Billy no mates, like all the others that use it. Perhaps the proposed Google VOIP product, when it comes out, will give us a decent competitor to Skype but at the moment it is a one horse race. jblackrupert 14 Posted December 23, 2010 Skype is good but the client bloat is not. It's heading the same direction ICQ took.
[aps]gnat 28 Posted December 24, 2010 Skype is good but the client bloat is not. It's heading the same direction ICQ took. Yes, totally agree. So many good programs just "evolve" into crappy, huge and slow bloatware. There has to be a new job opened in these Software companies. The job is the "The Line-in-the-Sand Guy" or "The Enough-is-Enough Girl"

Placebo 29 Posted December 25, 2010 I use Skype constantly, especially to call family in the UK for free (minus the subscription of course), would be lost without it but I refuse to upgrade past 3.8 all of the later clients were horrific and if they ever disable 3.8 I'll have to find some alternative to Skype.
