CAT Afghanistan v1.6 for ArmA 2 by PMC.

This is Afghanistan terrain and objects addon from Operation Flashpoint ported into ArmA 2. Its a advanced port, several modeling errors were fixed, textures merged and models optimized as well as config tweaked. No content have been added (except terrain has no ocean now, ie this is a terrain, not an island) or removed. Also the terrain uses now satellite texture / mask. There are no soldiers or vehicles in this addon.

Please... just... stop it.

I can really hardly imagine someone will use this Island in its current state for anything else but making jokes about.

Your work and effort are much appreciated as always, but please take your time with the satellite-map. I gave you some advice in how you can improve the sat-map with some fairly easy steps.

CAT-Afghanistan was a truly epic island, but this is - as currently released - unacceptable as a Final Version. I even doubt you have all the necessary permissions for porting this Addon.

I haven't tried the map yet, but other then the Sat Map thing, what else is wrong with the map aside from it's general "OFP"'ishness?

There's a lot of issues already visible by just checking the screenshots.

1) Road pieces are not alligned, there are small gaps between them

2) Clutter coming through the road pieces

3) The terrain still seems to have its 50m cell size

4) The building textures are simply totally outdated in 2010

This terrain would be great if all issues would be fixed and OA objects would be used instead the old OFP stuff which had issues already back then.

The building on the right in the 3rd picture shows how fubar'd the models are already.

Jeez Mondy, take it easy will you?

I am happy that you're bringing the most excellent island ever made to A2, however as mondkalb (quite brutishly) stated, the textures need some work. Perhaps when we get to use the OA buildings, those would fit snugly onto there.

Keep up the good work bro!

Why you can't simply pick one of your favourite projects and make it on par with A2+OA? Is there something or someone who is forcing you to release fugly addons?? Should we call some elite fastmovers or an AC-130 Gunship? Please, take your time and dont rush anything!!

If people would like to see OFPish looking addons/mods they should better install + play OFP. ;)

Please... just... stop it.

Excuse me?

I can really hardly imagine someone will use this Island in its current state for anything else but making jokes about.

I was discussing about this addon some time ago in my dev circles and mentioned that since Takistan is such Afghan theme, dunno if I even want to release CAT Afghanistan, it was then requested quite enthusiastically that please do release this one. So I did.

I gave you some advice in how you can improve the sat-map with some fairly easy steps.

Yes, you gave those advices when I was in final steps of putting this release together, I appreciate the advices and try to improve my photoshop skills, but if any results, they will show up on my future releases.

In other words, the timing of those advices was too late for this release which was already on way during our discussion.

CAT-Afghanistan was a truly epic island, but this is - as currently released - unacceptable as a Final Version.

True, that's why I never claimed it to be one.

I even doubt you have all the necessary permissions for porting this Addon.

Ah I can see now, you're just pulling trouble out of thing air, makes your earlier comments be seen in different light already.

Sorry to sound harsh, but you're loosing your "Reputation" as described in your "How to mod"-Section of the PMC-Wiki., beacuse this is simply is, and I quote:

Okay now you are totally out of line, comment all you want about artistic parts of the release but don't come saying something that is completely false.

The guide is to help people make technically sound addons, not to teach modeling tricks or texturing skills. This release I made is technically sound, sure there are couple of RPT errors which I'm working on, but other than that, feel free to point out how this is wrongly done.

I'm very saddened by such hostility, I mean did I do something wrong as you act like this?

1) Road pieces are not alligned, there are small gaps between them

Something on those ArmA 2 roads that make them different for OFP/ArmA ones.

2) Clutter coming through the road pieces

Yes, mentioned in the manual.

3) The terrain still seems to have its 50m cell size

So? It never was in this projects scope to add higer resolution terrain.

4) The building textures are simply totally outdated in 2010

I mentioned in the manual that there is texture streching, so we sort of can play this both ways, but yeah, known issue and mentioned in the manual.

This terrain would be great if all issues would be fixed and OA objects would be used

Then you have totally missed the point of CAT Afghanistan port.

Why on earth I would release OFP quality addon for presenting Afghanistan terrain when BIS has just released excellent takistan? The whole idea of this addon is to have that "OFP catintro" feeling.

Guys, I really don't understand where these ideas come from. I never said this is competion for OA, hehe.

Why you can't simply pick one of your favourite projects and make it on par with A2+OA? Is there something or someone who is forcing you to release fugly addons??

Heard that one before.

As general comment to the mood of this topic

I find it interesting that so much utterly worthless crap gets released in the community but nobody says a word, then when I put out properly (technically!) ported addon I get lynched on the forum. Real nice community here eh.

I have absolutely no problem with constructive criticism as feedback, I take that against no feedback any day, but most of the replies in this topic is made with totally wrong assumptions (and some with pure hostility I might add). I would very much like you guys to understand that.

Oh and I guess its pointless to say that, if you don't like the addon, don't say nothing and move along...

I for one am pleased to see this map over. I'll be honest, I won't be using it. But it was an important landmark in OFP, and it feels like a part of our heritage, so....

I sincerely and truly apologize. :(

My intent is in no way to be hostile or being "out for trouble", otherwise I wouldn't have helped you in the first place.

It is just... that these Satellite-map lacks of credibility. (Maybe this sounds less harming.)

I sincerely and truly apologize. :(

Apology accepted. No harm done :)

And again I thank you for the advices/help you gave me on PM, its very much appreciated and your every word has been saved so I can truly learn from them. I'm hoping to cooperate with you in the future, to improve my skills and for me to provide help to others (our wiki) from what I've learned. Maybe in the mix I can help you also if there is anything I can do :)

I definitely want to learn and fix the sharp edge satellite feature seen here and in my other terrain.

This used to be one of my favourite OFP islands! Great to actually see it again!

Wow, yeah! compared to the new terrains it does show its age a little now... still - it is what it is and we were all running around there being amazed not so very long ago.

If you do decide to update, particularly that sat-image, may I suggest you bang something out with L3DT? - it'll happily generate a decent quality sat with matching mask pretty quickly if you just feed it the heightmap... OK, so it'll decide for itself what texture goes where, so they may not correspond exactly to the current layout, but its a reasonably smart program - it should produce a decent "base" to work from with the minimum of effort...

Feel free to PM me about that SnakeMan, this was an old favourite, so I'll even do a basic A2 sat, mask and clutter for you if you like (though I'd need a copy of the heightmap), then you can adapt it anyway you want...

Nostalgia trip trap.

Allot of nostalgic ideas sound really great when you are talking casual with people that all have found memories of the original. Just porting it with no additions or update usually however becomes redundant. I never played opfor MP, or owned Arma 1 and I dont really have any comments about this release, nor do I know how many people will use it or not, but in my view, as a none opfor mp guy, it just looks as nostalgia taken a bit to far to me.

Of course you are free to do whatever you want with your time, but I dont think many outside your closest circle will find these kinds of ports useful and I also think most friends, specially if they asked for it, wont be honest enough to say that its not like they expected because there memories.

Enad, Fox'09

Would you both be so kind and stop spamming this thread with your nonsense no one cares about? Sort that by PM if you must.

Snake Man

I must admit that I have not read the manual. :o

But still it would be nice if the issues would be fixed some time and make this famous terrain at least somewhat up to "new standards".

So from what I've read SnakeMan isn't finished here?

Well at least I hope he isn't because, as said before, this was a truly epic OFP map next to Tonal, it would be nice to wander out over the mountains to the remote villages again, you could maybe add some more poppy fields :)

Yes its not finished, nowhere in my post there is any mention that this is final version. I would want to fix those textures on objects and satellite, any help would be great.

So please post bug reports / feedback and I'll see what I can do to fix issues.

Excellent, it seems those who appeared to be "bagging your work" genuinely want to help so thats good. From what I've read around the forums Bushlurker is good with Satellite Textures so you should take him up on his offer. ;)

Remember any of the follow feed back is meant to be positive. :)

So from wandering around the other night i noticed the buildings textures almost look inside out (have no better way to describe it), also they overlap the road a bit. Also am I right in saying the buildings you are using are different to the CAT ones? (My old rig died a horrible death and i have lost my beloved OFP with all its beautiful addons so i cant compare to the final release in OFP).

Its pedantic I know, in Mazar O Sharif the mosque in town is missing? From memory it even had shoes out the front, very nice touch, and the little markets around all the towns.

And really once the textures are fixed up the rocky valley roads should look a heap better also.

Are you thinking a direct port or the probably massive job of replacing some with OA ones?

Again I don't know the first thing about map making and re reading this post it looks more like I'm spouting my vision for CAT Afghan :D

Anyway I'll wander around again and check out some more.

Again thanks for doing this its a much loved map and I reckon even though there is a lot of desert action at the moment it'll go down well for nostalgia's sake with all the vets.
