Arma-2-Guru 55 Posted May 10, 2010 (edited) First, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Mark but obviously my username is BushWookie. I have only recently started playing this game and I have to say it's probably the best game I have played, ever. I got my username from the Battlefield Bad Company 2 term "bush wookie", based on snipers who just hide in bushes and spam bullets through others skulls. Anyway, I would like to ask, what was your first ArmA II experience? Mine was watching my friend play it for the first time (he got me into the game) and he was just showing the command system. He was in a helicopter as a pilot and was telling all his AI teammates to eject, it was so funny as they were not very high from the ground so they were pretty much just splatting as soon as their parachute deployed, share your first time as well please. :) Oh, I did play Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis briefly a while back. Kristian 47 Posted May 11, 2010 Well my first ArmA2 experience was trying out new stuff on LHD. But I've been around BIS games since OFP. My first RV-engine experience was when my friend showed me civillian cesna plane and russians in OFP
Darkhorse 1-6 16 Posted May 11, 2010 My first ArmA II experience (I played ArmA 1 and OFP tho) was me joining a server, and getting shot because some idiot wanted my humvee.
last_apoc 10 Posted May 11, 2010 I only started playing ARMA II (I have NO IDEA how I had never heard of ofp, arma I, even arma II for so long!) in around august last year. I looked at a video of it one night on some forum, and thought it looked alright so I put the demo to download on steam and when I get up the next morning I tried it and went through all the demos, the funnest one was learning how to use high command, when I placed the move order and watched my platoon go it was incredible!! Flash Thunder 10 Posted May 11, 2010 It was horrible, I had to change all the controls, find that "sweespot" with the graphics settings. the experience was me getting killed from the terminator bots in the editor. Obviously I like the game alot more after testing and playing. Plus mods like Robert Hammers weapon packs, Christains packs, Binko's units, the whole ACE 2 mod dev team and a whole bunch of others. this game without mod support= in garbage bin MONTHS ago. :)
Zipper5 74 Posted May 11, 2010 (edited) My first OFP experience was the first mission ("Training") in the Cold War Crisis campaign. Couldn't have chosen a better way to start. :D But my first Arma 2 experience was (attempting) to play through the coop campaign with Rellikki. It was a hell of a lot of fun, partially due to the bugs we encountered, like this one: MkCcgZw0HOs :p Edited May 11, 2010 by Zipper5
SnR 1 Posted May 11, 2010 My first Arma II experience was attempting to read German, which didn't really matter as the first couple of Crash to Desktops is bi lingual for all :p Nothing gives you that winning feeling more than the Arma series once conquered. Steakslim 1 Posted May 11, 2010 I jumped into an mp session in the demo. Killed some guy i stumbled upon not too long into it while sneaking, I think he thought I was on his team, as I also thought the same for a moment. Anywho I took his m24, and proceeded to snipe some folks. Of course this didn't last all too long and I was killed, and the performance on the demo was horrid compared to now...but it was all good. walker 0 Posted May 11, 2010 (edited) Hi all Ahh! a long way back... BIS's OFP demo a decade or so back in fact. I remember the music and the sunrise and peninsula with beach and the lighthouse. I crashed the jeep several times eventually I got the team to the truck and boarded it where my character went in to a long exposition about how to fight; which was probably worth listening too as it had clues. I arrived at the debus point at the time I did not know that was what they were called. I ran 30 yards and got shot dead. I reloaded from the save, ran 25 yards got shot dead. I reloaded from the save, ran 30 yards got shot dead. Some time latter... Reload; I walked 50 yards got shot dead. Reload; I walked 60 yards (different route) got shot dead. Reload; I walked 40 yards (same route as above) got shot dead. Reload; I walked 30 yards threw a grenade, walked 20 yards fired my gun, at what I do not know probably a bush and I got shot dead. Reload; I walked 30 yards threw a grenade at something this time, walked 20 yards fired my gun, at the same thing and I got shot dead. Reload; I walked 30 yards threw a grenade at something hit it, walked 20 yards fired my gun, at the same thing and it shot me dead. Reload; I walked 30 yards threw a grenade at something hit it, walked 20 yards fired my gun at it but it was already dead, had I killed it? I do not know for as I was thinking that I got shot dead. Some time later... I ran 25 yards crawled 10 threw a grenade at something and hit it. I then crawled about 200 yards a battle happened, I saw none of it, my officer shouted at me a lot there was some smoke rising into the sky and I got shot dead. I ran 25 yards crawled 10 threw a grenade at something and hit it. I then crawled about 20 yards towards it, it was still alive and I shot it! I shot it! I shot it and I killed it! And then I got shot dead. Some time later... I ran 25 yards crawled 10 threw a grenade at something and hit it. I then crawled about 20 towards it it was dead as were its two mates. I was close to it and something popped up on the screen in the corner I pressed enter and up came its gear, it had a much bigger gun than me something called a PK I took it was MY GUN! I then ran 50 yards then crawled until I could see the enemy, lots of little moving blobs and dots and stick figures! I opened up and fired at them; some of the bullets even went toward them, honest! Then I got shot dead. Some time later... Reload from a user save point.. I was in a bush.. It was the same bush.. It was my only user save point.. it was always the same bush.. There was a BMP.. I did not dare move.. I had a gun.. There was a body, an enemy with an RPG, and beyond it a barbed wire obstacle and some ammo boxes.. All my buddies were dead.. All the enemy were dead except for the BMP, I had even killed some of them, 5 or 6 I think.. The BMP was playing squash the bush.. It was a very angry BMP.. It was whizzing around from bush to bush at top speed, then spinning around, its tracks squeaking and clanking.. It was worse when it was behind me as I could not move to look at it.. It would whizz toward me from behind and I would close my eyes because, I think it saw me.. Some times it would whizz past my bush inches from my elbow.. It would whizz past me and make a great display of spining round and round on the chosen offending bush.. Then it would whizz off to squash another bush, sometimes in front of me, sometines behind me.. Some times I ran for the RPG and... Some time later... I was in a bush.. It was the same bush.. There was a BMP.. I was scared.. The BMP was behind me.. I will never like the sound of a BMP behind me.. Ever, ever, ever.. I ran for the RPG, gear, reload, point blank fire.. I am alive! I am Alive! I AM ALIVE! :yay: And the BMP is dead! That damned demented dalek of a BMP is dead Dead DEAD! :D A big sigh, I look at the sky; it is good to be alive! What is that sound? Birds tweeting. :) No not that sound that sound? Tracks! I use the binoculars I got of my officers body. A BMP and Two Tanks! You have got to be kidding me! I run for the houses. God Damn should have reloaded at the ammo boxes, one god damn user save.. Some time later... I was in a bush.. It was the same bush.. There was a BMP... One day I finished it, it was before the game was released for sale, I played that demo until it wore groves in my hard drive. I even got so good that I used do the whole mission all on my own by driving the commander south of Houdan then ramboing it and going to the town where the tanks were holed up killing its crew stealing the tank and killing them all before they even got to Houdan. There has never been a game as good as this one. Kind Regards walker Edited May 13, 2010 by walker
Zipper5 74 Posted May 11, 2010 Ah... Good times Walker. I actually saved both the CWC and Resistance demos to my FTP in case all download links to them in the future are dead. :p
eggbeast 3685 Posted May 11, 2010 haha yes that reminds me of the sniper mission in arma 1. i got dropped off in a humvee with an M24. mission was to take out an enemy resupply convoy. Now I'm pretty good with a bolt action and can rack 100 kills to 10 deaths in MP on call of duty... so... ran up a hill near to a massive water tower. was thrilled to see an AI oppo planting a satchel IED. climbed the tower, waited.... waited.... trucks heard then appeared. man was I tense. took a deep breath, relaxed my right palm. scoped the IED and the road, established killzone. identified the area of defillade I had to try to prevent them reaching. trucks hit the IED and BOOM! people spilling out of trucks and spreading out. i could hear commands. I took aim and... they shot me dead. after 20 tries (short version) i realised the AI can see you through objects if you're on top of them. good to know. so disappointed I hid in a bush and retried. after another 20 goes I got them all even after they surged in on me throwing nades and i resorted to lying behind a rock and pistoling them as they appeared. hunted down the last few who had made the defillade. then the attack on corazol (or was this before?) there was a big attack going on i got an order to run for the truck. all my buddieswere in it but i wanted to rob bodies for rockets. i got to the truck and... it drove off. i tried to keep up with it, but it lost me in dolores. i heard the orders for disembarking, the guys spotting targets and opening up on them. a massive fight was underway in the distance. i could see smoke. i ran towards it. when i got there the battle was over. arma2 was similar. i had played arma 1 for nearly 2 years so i put it on veteran... STUPID or what? started the mission, realised I had no HUD markers and couldnt make any... it was dark. there werebushes everywhere and the nightsky was blinding me and making my NVG very very dark. i stumbled through a wood. my AI oppos spotted enemy and gave orders. i realised the target they intended me to take out was in another village, i was on the other side of the wood. i ran to catch up. when i got to the right village i ran into a loadofguys thinking "phew! I'm back lads lets get cracking..." and as they turned around I saw they were holding AK's... i gave up SP until the nightvision fix mod came out... awesome game - like life though it's flawed to hell. mchide 0 Posted May 11, 2010 (edited) OPF demo... it was from PC Gamer CD. I was browsing true games and i soo name Operation Flashpoint, wtf isnt that a that game i readed about a year ago? I remember this pictures from that times And from my head now: Binoculars, i soo BMP and something running... little dots on my 15 inch monitor. Fps was too low for playing. I quited next moment, lovered my resoulution and quited again... ... i purcased GF32MB next day. Loading mission... Smooth BMP and smooth dots... Jeep drive was briliant. My first driving was crash, wrrrr crash right, wrrr crash left. I soo a group of soldiers in the distance, i stoped and juped out, i fired my riffle, i think 3 of them fell down dead... FLASH on other side, next moment i was DEAD. Of course it was BRAVO team. It was not an enemy... Next few days i played that mission 1000 times until i was alive at the end. It was really allmost the same expiriance as Walker describe. Edited May 11, 2010 by mchide
nettrucker 144 Posted May 12, 2010 I also started my first experience back in OFP days and they were very much the same as Walker described, when reading his reply, it made me laugh a bit :D because I had the same experience maybe in different circumstances because I never played the demo. In any case my first ArmA II experience was that I couldn't even get it to run. I upgraded everything but my video card which was absolutely crap. So I started to play the first time after 1 month that ArmA II had been released. In the meantime I was reading throughout the forums and everyone was complaining about the buggy campaign with a lot of flaws. since my favourite part of the game was always the editor I didn't even bother to play the campaign and went straight into the editor experimenting some stuff. I played throughout the campaign after patch 1.04 has been released. I liked the campaign apart the warfare missions, which in my opinion, shouldn't have been implemented in the campaign, but this is just a personal opinion of mine. One of the most stunning moments were in the editor when I was working on a mission. The game was patched at that time 1.02 where the AI was really unforgiving. I experienced for the first time enemy AI putting up heavy surpression fire when they detected my position. I was pinned down meanwhile some AI were flanking my position and the rest kept my position under continious fire. As soon as I tried to move I got my butt handed over. That was freaking hilarious. It was hard to spot the enemy due to all the clutter and it is still hard today. In any case I love this game even there are flaws, but I can live with that given the magnitude of it. regards:D
jw custom 56 Posted May 12, 2010 My first ArmA 2 experience was multiplayer coop in the demo, the Kamenyy mission to be exact. My first multiplayer experience in full ArmA 2 was a Domination game, got run over by a A10 tard who took off from the taxiway! I played OpF but missed out on ArmA 1! Arma-2-Guru 55 Posted May 13, 2010 Some really cool stories, the thing about getting run over by the A-10 gave me a good giggle.
WimpoD 10 Posted May 13, 2010 (edited) **EDIT** Deleted pics, they were too big! **EDIT** Some awesome stories there, real fun read. ArmA2, suprisingly, is the first of the OPF/ArmA games I've ever got into (played OPF and loved it however, but never stayed with it). I'm a real sucker for realism, absolutely love it, so when I installed this and eventually found the right settings for my computer (low), I jumped into a multiplayer game. Once getting my head over the controls, I started the game. What happened next was a peachy introduction to ArmA2. I had (and regularly still have to this day) one of the best gaming experiences of my life. I shadowed some players on the server that seemed to know what they were doing. We boarded a chopper and set off to the objective. The chopper dropped us off just south of the target and we set off on foot towards it, at which point I branch off from the bigger group with 1 other player. We come to the top of a banking, covered by the treeline, that slopes into one of the villages. Myself and my comrade sprint down the banking, vault a fence, and head toward a farmhouse. On the other side I can hear the incessant rumble of a tank engine. After hugging the walls of the farmhouse all the way around, and peeking the corner slowly, we saw a tank and a few troops. Suddenly, as my comrade was looking around the side, he was shot...dead. That was that. I couldn't save him. So there I am, on my first online experience with ArmA2, stuck behind a farmhouse, poopin' my pants because there's a mother-trucking tank on the other side which I have no idea how to deal with. I do what any noob would do in this situation, I called in backup. I had no idea about laser designators and the sort, so I pull out my GPS and start giving co-ordinates out over team chat. I express my urgency, but nothing happens. About 3 or 4 minutes go by, and I'm wondering where the hell backup/airstrike is, so I go back into chat and type, "Please! Someone take out this tank....." Just as I press enter to send the message, a rocket screams past me and BOOM goes straight into the tank. The explosion was HUGE, killing the 3 or so enemies gathered round the tank. The next thing I hear is the distinctive A-10 engines flying over head, as I spot the plane up above gliding off to it's next objective. I wave quielty at my computer screen, as if to say 'thanks for the help', realising that this isn't like any other game, and that the pilot had literally set off from the airstrip after I'd called it in. I sit back thinking about the most intense 5 minutes in my videogame history. I am a complete gamer after getting ArmA2, and have solely been saving up to update my PC before the released of OA at the end of June. The 'battlefield moments' are unlike any other game, the way a battle unfolds is utterly fantastical. Thankyou Bohemia, and thankyou community members for making online such a pleasure to play. dmarkwick 261 Posted May 13, 2010 Like many others here, I guess my first ArmA2 experience is actually my first OFP experience. I am ashamed to say that after trying OFP when it was first released, I took it back to the shop :D I later found out that it was a fault on my keyboard that was causing the poor experience, so I bought it again. Still I was finding it tough, I would have said at the time that it was unnecessarily tough, what's the point of punishing the player for each & every mistake relentlessly? For not knowing what's going on in a confusing and chaotic situation? But then a friend of mine took me through the editor, and a few things started to become apparent: 1. The player is not the center of the game. This means that for the first time, I had a game that I could set up a scenario, and that scenario was in no way dependant on the actions of the player. Stuff happened by itself regardless of whether the player was even there or not. I liked that :) 2. All scenarios could very easily be randomised to a point where even the mission maker had no real idea of what was likely to happen, without it being a totally random mess. 3. Treating the game as though it were not a game, and you really would die if you died ingame, was the correct way to play it. This meant that if in real life I would be too wary to cross an open field, then ingame I would go around it's perimeter instead, just like RL. Also, of course, the wealth of addons and scripts really put the top hat on it. In particular I liked the DAC addon script suite, that system is just made with me in mind I love it :) I eventually put together a hybrid mission blending a custom CTI mission and a finely balanced DAC setup to give me what I considered to be an almost perfect game setup. A small group of us at Frugalsworld played it exclusively until ArmA was released :) and it always provided unexpected and terrific gameplay. I still consider it the best thing I've made :)

Arma-2-Guru 55 Posted May 13, 2010 It's my thread, I don't care if people talk about something other than what the title says. Chat away people. :) And ArmA II is just like a better version of Operation Flashpoint, it's still on topic because it's a Bohemia Interactive game and you can have pretty much the same experiences in both games, peace.
