INDIAN PM writes to Medvedev, condemns Moscow blasts

New Delhi, March 29 (IANS) Strongly condemning the Moscow bombings, India Monday underlined its solidarity with Russia in combating terrorism and hoped the terrorists would be brought to justice soon.

In a letter to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said: 'It is with great anguish that I have learnt of the bomb blasts in Moscow, which have led to the loss of so many innocent lives.'

Describing the blasts as 'a most tragic and horrific act of violence', Manmohan Singh said: 'At this difficult hour our thoughts are with you, the people of Russia and the families and friends of the victims of this terrible tragedy.

'On behalf of the government and people of India, I convey our deepest condolences. I wish to assure you that India stands united with Russia in combating the forces of violence and terrorism,' he said.

Scores of people were killed when two suspected female suicide bombers blew themselves up on Moscow Metro trains in the morning rush hour Monday. It was the worst terror attack in Moscow since 2004.

'We stand by Russia in its hour of tragedy and condemn terrorism in all forms and countries,' External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna told reporters here.

'These were horrendous attacks. We sympathise with those who have died and suffered,' he said.

'India strongly condemns the bomb blasts and extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed by these acts of targeted violence,' the external affairs ministry said.

'India expresses its solidarity with the government and the people of the Russian Federation and hopes that the perpetrators of these senseless attacks will be brought to justice,' it said.

This is so bad now, no one can feel safe. I remeber in '99 when terrorists bombed low income apartment in Moscow, where 300 died and injured more than 1000. Or 2003 when female terrorists detonated their belts at the rock concert in Moscow too. Not to mention massive hostage taking resulting in many deaths.

And you think that they're doing the exact same thing as Russia is? Some of them may be, but ca. 100000 civilian deaths and disappearances in Chechnya since 1994 frankly makes all Chechen responses on Russian soil very insignificant. Unless you think that the life of a Russian citizen is over 100x more valuable than that of a Chechen, or that it's less cowardly to slaughter a whole village with artillery and airplane bombs than taking your own life to do a fraction of that damage.

I mean Russia has a long, proud tradition of slaughtering the families of known or suspected terrorists and "terrorists." Whether that means bombing Grozny to dust, vacuum-bombing mountain villages (or just pounding them with rockets). The motivation of these terrorists is not difficult to divine. They could have been Girl Scouts rather than Muslim fanatics and I would not be surprised.

So if we're just talking in terms of medieval vengeance and tribalism, it is Russia's turn to pay the blood price.

When you use it right back against the general population of the terrorists tenfold, their cause will become somewhat ennobled in the eyes of the world. Many craters in Basque Country and Londonderry these days? Meanwhile, if you're cousin-in-law is a Chechen mujahedin, the police will burn down your house and beat up your aunt.
