LockDOwn 0 Posted January 29, 2010 2. Game is only fun on weekends because of too few cogamers online. This hasn't been discussed deeply. And I can't follow the threadopener with this as I already stated in the fourth post of this thread. And I tell you why: I had hundreds if not thousands of 1 vs 1 (take it literally!) CTI games that on average gave me thrills for 60 min up to five hours each (!) game. I just wanna say - you DON'T need many cogamers to have fun with Arma2 online. Only with few people you can really cooperate not with 20 of them. Ever had 20 gamers on Teamspeak - no, thank you. Don't need that. No more serious tactical gamin' that way. So - the second aspect of the original post -: Don't wait for the weekend do a 1 vs 1 or a 2 vs AI on one of the 700 servers steadily there for you. Exactly. Having to play AI online in order to have a populated server has turned many people away. Most people do NOT want to play AI online as this game has proven. mosh 0 Posted January 29, 2010 Exactly. Having to play AI online in order to have a populated server has turned many people away. Most people do NOT want to play AI online as this game has proven. :j: yeah sure... I prefer PvP myself, but the few populated PvP servers that have it vs the many populated servers that play coop against ai... tells me you're way off. Try again. galzohar 31 Posted January 29, 2010 It's more because you can play domination with even just 1 guy but a PvP mission with less than 10 players would be pretty retardedly boring and even with 10 it'd need to be pretty damn small to actually work.
nettrucker 142 Posted January 29, 2010 Here are my 2 cents. 1.) In case you have a big budget and a powerful marketing machine at your disposal you can even sell s**t. Best example Dragon Rising, just to mention one. 2.) Buggy game releases. ArmA I and ArmA II were not fit for release poor quality control especially the ArmA II campaign had some game breaking issues. ArmA I campaign was just average compared to OFP campaigns. 3.) Bad reviews in gaming magazines on release made a huge impact. people are reading other peoples review and judge them before even played for themselves. 4.) Bad mouth to mouth pubblicity of people who just don't get the sprit of this game and don't get satisfaction in playing it. 5.) People got scared of all the technical issues reported and the system specs to run the game. People with ueberigs having problems to run the game properly and without issues. I guess that scared a few people. But there was nothing BIS could do under that aspect. We're not talking about a console game which all have the same technical hardware layout. How may different setups have we here in the community when talking about PC's? That was a mission impossible form beginning IMHO, so I don't blame them for that. 6.) Multiplayer is not in issue as long as you stay away from public servers. There are a lot of organized squads out there and it's fun. I played some preparation battles on Charlie Foxtrot server and it was a great fun. More than 40 people per side connected on Teamspeak. Never had any issues with communication. Very disciplined game play. You talk only in case you have to report something otherwise you keep your mouth shut and you report it to your teamleader, teamleader relays to HQ without jamming the teamspeak channels. It was a pitty I had to stop due to real life issues because it was amazing. In any case that's the main reasons in my opinion. regards
bangtail 0 Posted January 29, 2010 Avibird1 is a console fanboy that finds it hard that a BIS won't make Arma 2 for that platform. He really believes they will someday and trys to keep his thread alive, begging for them to sticky it. Dreams die hard for some people. Maybe Operation Arrowhead,eh? /QFT I wish he'd stop derailing threads with his BS. It's not being made for console, get over it already.
76 0 Posted January 29, 2010 (edited) The most played types of games on the PC TODAY are still role playing games,RTS, flight sim, and turn base mil sim. FPS are not! FPS is the number one type of games played on a console this is a fact. Proof, references, links to this info... you seem to be the only that has it. Every day more and more PC players are switching from PC to consoles this is a fact (for many reasons). Yes, I know PC are better in many ways but consoles are just easier and fit into players lifes better to just play games at home to relax after a hard days work. What a lot of horse shit. Yes, I know ARMA is not like your average FPS on the console but, There is a need, want and large market of console players who want this type of game. A lot of the so called little console kids that grew up with the XBOX and XBOX 360 lets so 10-20 years old are now 20-30+ years old. We all know what happens with age, your taste changes with time this a fact.If BOHEMIA can make the game work and they are working on it. This game will be a great hit with most console players in that age range which is a lot bigger then the PC FPS market. BOHEMIA will make better profits and more game companies will copy the formula. This game will be more popular. This was the question of the trhead. What do you guys think, I know what the die hard PC boys are going to say but stop and think what was the question of the thread. Here is the real answer like it or not. The truth be told by me. I knew it! I didn't just 'lose' my crack pipe... Edited January 29, 2010 by

bangtail 0 Posted January 30, 2010 Agreed. Do we really want it to be more popular? In a word, No. The word "gamer" now doesn't mean what it meant even 10 years ago. avibird 1 155 Posted January 30, 2010 (edited) Not to be a prick or anything, but can you please backup your facts with statistics, research etc? Stating things like they are fact really need some proof. And even though consoles might be taking bigger parts of the market, is this because of PC gamers switching to consoles or new gamers starting with consoles? Things like that matter when you're posting things like a "fact".Again: don't take this the wrong way. I'd just like some proof if people are claiming to know "the truth" (if that even exists). Word : Username : Filter : . dragoncyber 08-08-2008 at 05:58:41 PM .These days there something that worries me a great deal. The articles I read on various websites about how PC gaming is slowly dying. Or how when I walk into a Best Buy, or EB Games, or any other electronic outlet there is a huge decrease in available options for purchase when it comes to software and PC accessories. So I will get right into it then. Have any of you realized the lack of support for PC products as I have? It seems everywhere I go now the PC sections are getting smaller and smaller. When I walk into EB games or other similar shops they tell me now that they are phasing out PC games and that their entire PC inventory is on sale for discounted prices. I go to Wal-Mart and what used to be a two section isle has been converted into a 5 ft long shelf with 15-20 titles to choose from( unfortunately all priced wrong, and with the wrong stickers attached to the shelving units as is Wal-Mart’s standard operating procedure). I go to Target and find what used to be a sizeable selection of recent PC software and gaming titles reduced to almost nothing but again a 5 foot long shelf. I used to have one good standby, COMPUSA which always had an excellent selection of PC Software, now out-of -business. Circuit city used to be pretty good, they to are now removing their PC Software inventory and everything is currently being marked down, and the best part, they are on their way out the door too, trying to sell out. So with all the vendors and retailers removing PC stock(including performance parts and hardware) from their shelves where does this leave all of us?? Sure you can say the internet!! But that doesn’t help you when even most of our larger sites our trimming down their offerings as well. And what about the excitement you get when you get to pick up the box look at the graphics and read the titles description. There is a tangible sense of value when you are holding the box in your hands. All of this leaves me with a huge sense of worry. I know this must be disheartening for software programmers and game design firms out there trying to make a living. I honestly have been a PC gamer almost my entire life, I used to play the first Wolfenstein and Doom games when they were on little floppy disk's. I have been playing Blizzards' games since the first Warcraft, and Unreal since it's first version. Command and Conquer when it looked like little green squares driving around in the snow ( those were tanks) and Wing Commander too. The first Mech Warrior games. I have played them all. I also collect the boxes and keep all of my games in their original boxes. I currently have 80 mint condition game boxes. I never pirated any of the games I have played, and I think pirating sucks. I believe pirated software is the number one reason why PC gaming is going the way of the dinosaurs. My biggest concern comes however from the hardware side of the matter, as Nvidia and ATi are at war with each other trying to build the greatest graphics cards known to man, and many of us are willingly buying them, and stacking our computers with 4+ GB of ram, and quad processors and extreme cooling systems all to be able to play the newest games at the most maxed out graphics options. Many of know that our PC's are often times 5-10 times faster than even the PS3. It's actual graphics solution is based off of the Nvidia 7800 series GPU. Take (2) GTX280's and you could easily be 10 X faster on any current game on the market compared to the PS3. But what happens to all of us if PC gaming DIES?? All of our hard earned money and time spent configuring and building the best machines our money can buy will be wasted. Where will our hobby go? Where will the desire to make an awesome gaming system come from, ...it wont. That’s just it, if PC gaming dies, there are many other markets soon to follow. The graphcis card market would crash for anything really above mid-level or entry level net surfing purpose GPU's and would revert back to integrated chips. High performance motherboard manufacturers would suffer, as would high end audio card makers. Many of the LCD manufacturers would see huge drops in revenue on anything larger than 1280X1024 screen sizes. Literally if PC gaming goes, the entire performance market would soon crash down as there would no longer be the demand from consumers for such high end components. Recent articles involving the makers of Crysis, Titan's Quest, and now even John Carmack and ID software express they are switching their focus to consoles primarily because PC games just aren’t selling anymore. THE makers of Grand Theft Auto 4 and Mass Effect were within a hairs thickness of not releasing their games for PC this time around until the PC Enthusiasts spoke up. Console sales and gaming is wiping the floor with PC's and all the evidence supports this. But what about those of us who really dont like consoles, are we just a niche market now? I have a PS3 and honestly the only games I play are Need for Speed Carbon and Fight Night Round 3, I play PS2 games on my PS3 right now more than anything else in the PS3 library. Don't get me wrong I have 10 PS3 games, but problem is once you play through em thats it. They dont have the replay value that PC games have and dont require as much skill. The point of my writing is to express grave concern for the PC gaming market, and to bring to light the fact that if you are "Pirating" software, you need to wake up and realize that you are killing your own favorite hobby. Many of us love our machines that we have worked for and built, and many of us use them everyday for gaming, internet, movies, and various other uses. But people if we cant bring the focus back to where it all began, (with PC's) then the Console vs. PC wars are lost, and so is our beloved past time that separates so many of us from the casual console gamer. Don't let it happen. PAY for your games, respect the designers and programmers, who have devoted their lives to making you awesome entertainment, and start showing these development firms that the PC is still alive and kicking. cri74 10 Posted January 30, 2010 (edited) Well... fortunately USA is just a part of the rest of world ;) Things are very different where i live, in Oslo which is the largest city in Norway (500 000 in population++... small town in usa maybe)i got about 5 PC stores that only sell PC parts and ready made computers and related items, mouse/keyboards/DWR etc... usually i got to wait for 10-15 minutes in any one of them to get to the register so i can pay because they are that bizzy... all of them within 15 minutes travel time fom my appartment by car. All of them been there for over 5 years an by the looks of it will be there for 5 more. However Norway and Scandinavia are pretty special when it comes to technology, most PC owners do not have PC older than 3-5 years. Most mobilephone users dont have phones older than 2-3 years. I cant back those numbers up by any articles, but i do think the numbers are just about correct. PC gaming will not die as long as you pay for the games you play... the crappy ones, considerd not worthy of PC gamers go to console. Just have a look at MW2 or Dragon Rising... it was a big mistake to let those games enter the PC domain, let the 14 year olds with Xbox920 play that crap and when they grow up and get tierd of linear games like Space Invaders(1978) and MW2(2009).. (the same game but different look)...they can buy a real game like Arma2 and a PC to play it :) PC gaming is part of the reason why development goes forward in the PC industry i would suggest. I kind of compare consoles to a BigMac at Mc.Donalds - PC's to a rich meal at gormuet restaurant or somthing you make at home - Arma 2 to a sadisitic selfcenterd bitch Edited January 30, 2010 by cri74

LockDOwn 0 Posted January 30, 2010 :j: yeah sure...I prefer PvP myself, but the few populated PvP servers that have it vs the many populated servers that play coop against ai... tells me you're way off. Try again. PvP is not marketed or pushed. So most see the Coop severs, like I did, try it and leave. I too was gonna quit until I accidentally found the one true PvP server. The proof is in all the FPS's out there.
Freeborne 10 Posted January 30, 2010 (edited) I love ArmA 2, but the reason it isn't as popular as it could be falls mostly (IMHO) on BI's shoulders. There's never been much marketing for ArmA 2. How often do you see posters or cardboard cut-outs of the game when you walk into a games store? When do you see it loaded up on the demo PC's or consoles in stores? When have you turned on the TV and seen an ad for ArmA? How often have you seen games magazines with ArmA on the front page? Also, the game is quite difficult to get into. I've been playing since OFP so I'm used to it all, but I hear the same complaint from newbies constantly. You can't jump on a server nowadays without downloading multiple (large) patches and mods. Without steam it's a bit of a pain to find these updates, download them and run them in order. You then have to work out what mods are required to play on a server, which isn't always easy for someone new to the game because the built-in game browser gives players no visual feedback what they need to download or where to get it from. So then they jump on google and visit the website of the server they want to play on, or do a search for the missing mods. Overall it's all a total pain. Once they have them downloaded, they have to work out how to install them in mod folders, customize shortcuts to ArmA to load them, etc. Then they jump on a server and find out they need to use Ventrilo or TeamSpeak or they'll get kicked or can't fly choppers (or best case they just miss out on what half the people are saying). I love the game, but BI really need to get around to making the game easier to set up and use. One of ArmA's strongest assets has always been the community made mods, yet all these years later and BI still hasn't done anything to make it easier to find and download requires mods. The game itself will appeal to a much larger audience then which currently plays it, but its the barriers of entry that holds the masses at bay. I've rarely heard players complain that ArmA just doesn't do it for them. Usually their complaints are about things BI should have fixed (bugs, bad performance, lack of intro movies to get you interested, game crashing, unable to find mods, etc) Edited January 30, 2010 by Freeborne
HyperU2 11 Posted January 30, 2010 I love ArmA 2, but the reason it isn't as popular as it could be falls mostly (IMHO) on BI's shoulders. I don't think so.
Zipper5 74 Posted January 30, 2010 What I don't understand is that AVIBIRD 1 has come on here, to a forum for games such as these, and expected to not find PC gamers. Not only that, but he also thinks that he'll garner some support for slagging us off and calling us fanbois in huge wall-of-text posts that always have the same "Keep the faith, community" titles. You saw how that "other game" was screwed over to fit on to consoles. In fact, I saw you on their forums many times, and you were quite the advocate of the game. Now that it's disappointed you, you've come back here and are causing nothing but trouble with your constant "PCs are dead" and "consoles are the way of the future" rants. It would be nice if you stopped posting this stuff in general, but can you at least stop derailing threads with it?
TheHarvesteR 11 Posted January 30, 2010 (edited) I don't even think it comes down to realism. Look at other sandbox titles, mainly Garrys Mod for HL2. That is a wonderful mod, you can do some pretty amazing things just in the game, but it doesn't hold your hand or tell you what to do. A lot of people do not like that, they like to have their hands held and be guided through a story and when the story is done they are done with the title. Agreed 100%. As I see it, there are two distinct and utterly incompatible trains of thought in the gaming industry now: the argument whether a game should allow you to do more, or tell a better story. The mainstream industry is moving steadily towards the latter, why? Well, it's cheaper, safer, and they have the certainty that there is a large brain-dead audience ready to consume yet another sequel. Developing static content for a game is relatively easy... All you need do is hire a huge team of artists, modelers, animators and writers to make essentially a semi-interactive action movie, and you're set. One more identical FPS title released, the challenging work being done 15 years ago when the genre was invented :p All the players need to do now is press the right buttons at the right time to watch the action movie progress. Now, there's the other side of the coin... granted, a much smaller side of the coin... the few brave developers who really go outside the tried and proven ideas and take a risk to try new things... BIS is one of those developers. These guys put their efforts into developing a truly new and interesting experience... uncompromising realism over player-centric action sequences... something that requires patience and intellect instead of the cheap thrill of instant gratification... This is what ArmA is for me. It's more than a game... it's a statement that rings out over the mind-numbing trend I see developing in the mainstream market. As for the lack of recognition it gets... well, my personal opinion is simply that most people haven't the brains to play this game... they're better off playing their brain-dead shooters... at least they don't come bug us and tk us here ;) Cheers Edited January 30, 2010 by TheHarvesteR
HyperU2 11 Posted January 30, 2010 In the past 3 years, give or take, PS3, Wii, and 360 have been released. In that same amount of time I've upgraded my computer and it still churns ARMA2 out just fine. No surprise that console sales are 3 times what PC sales are. bravo 6 0 Posted January 30, 2010 I for one think the game need a powerful computer to run with decent and enjoyable quality and fluid game. At the moment i can't afford a new computer, i can run ArmA2 with my current rig but i don't have enough pleasure playing it because lots of times i do not have a fluid game, and for me thats crucial. I know there are few old OFP players in the same situation, some people can't afford new rigs to play ArmA2 in order to have reasonable pleasure. Maybe in a few years popularity of ArmA2 grows up. At the current days i play only OFP because its the only game i have fun with. Some ArmA2 addons just lag the crap out of my computer, and i prefer not to play it.
