Wings Of Prey

So Mr Burns the no graphics settings is a demo limitation then right?

Most likely cost of the smaller download size, 6GB vs. 1.3GB ... they must have some pretty overkill textures in the full version.

Something that is driving me mildly insane though is that in demo you intentionally cannot save any ingame settings. So for every restart of the game you´ll need to readjust controls :(

@Mr burns .. your pics were they photshopped at all, again they have that rich black = black depth, and again mines still wishy washy and alot more glare to it, hmmm.

Not shopped at all, i stopped doing that when ArmA2 came out.

Realy? i have the 6.5 gig ISO image torrent version .. hmmm. The link of which was on previous page.

Where did you get the lower size version? EDIT: just seen its been rolled out, well at least I wont need to download the whole thing again if I unlock it.

Still cant find reports of gunfire looping ... I can make it happen an repeat all the time.

Register on the yuplay forums and post a bug report on it along with your system specs :)

I got this for the demo download.

BTW I just extracted the ISO to a drive of choice and ran the .exe ... without install it has no registry enties is that ok, or when you purchase is there a install procedure?

Honestly I don't remember. But I think in a way it was similar with beta installation. But I'm not sure.

As for the sound problem you reported I've never had it, but then again I don't use outside view, only the cockpit.

Indeed I have done so now.

I also tried under Vista (dual boot) and that has no gun sound issues, seems for me its just under XP .. but its fully updated as i play Arma2 on it and other things. And I can repeat it all the time.

I also found that my joystick wont record the buttons and it seems like a demo limitation again.

I had a CDT in Vista though, not in XP.

I dont understand the silly limitations they put into the demo like not remembering any controls and graphics cap, its like they don't want you to enjoy it for long. I want to play the demo more but with fiddly settings and no save on exit I kind of gave up :o IE to enjoy it with aa and higher settings and to have my controllers working perfectly I would need to buy it .. is a bit "odd" compared to all other demo's.

Having said that once you have it ironed out its superb, I was mad to get this as soon as I saw it but im going to hold out and see what patches bring as a few niggles off the bat are in for a fix in a later patch. Plus im not keen on the payment system, many asking for Paypal .. I would be happy with that more.

I finally got IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 working with my Win 7 64bit install.

Before I got it working, I knew there were differences in the behavior of the planes between WoP and IL-2, but I couldn't quite place it on memory alone. So, I decided to take a plane common between the two games, make a video of the same maneuvers in each, and splice them together so I could watch it myself

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPuXvo4DSmg

As it turns out, alot of the differences are via a heap of small things in IL-2 that add up to a feel of more complex experience and believable control over the aircraft. This was just a very simple comparison.

  • Max speed at full throttle and level flight below 500ft altitude
  • Turn radius before start of blackout effect
  • Turn stall speed with one wing below the other
  • Possibility of stall recover if below 500 ft altitude
  • Vertical climb rate at full throttle and max speed from approximately 200ft altitude
  • Max altitude of climb
  • Lowest speed at pinnacle of climb

Unfortunately, both games have the speed & altitude info on the left side, so you can't see that info on the WoP side.

I was actually suprised when I spliced the two videos together. While the two games definitely feel different, the parameters were very close to one another. I started figuring out that the enviromental detail and cockpit scaling of each game was part of it. The shudder effect in IL-2 is another main effect that is missing from WoP.

One thing that IL-2 does do that WoP does not is warn the pilot of an oncoming stall. This is actually a one up for WoP since a WWII sim should not have any sort of stall warning. But,t hat visual warning was a carry over from the very early days of IL-2 when the flight models and graphics were not what they became after years of development and patching.

Overall, WoP has the IL-2 foundation. If the WoP dev's can get the shudder effects and the pre-stall counter rotation implemented, then that will dbe a great step towards more believability in flight.

Dedicated servers will really help WoP.

WOP is a blast to play and a joy to look at, but its main problem is that the real speed ingame seem to be half of what it says nominally: it says 400km/h and feels barely 200km/h visually for instance.

I believe this was to compensate for the maps being much smaller than in IL2 (though they look awsome) and probably make the game easier to play too.

The sad part is that even with half speed, I reached a border unintentionally a few times already while fighting... and it kills immersion a lot, while limiting mission creation.

(Note : I'm still having a blast at the moment, but I feel the world will feel small soon)

i think i will stay with IL-2 especially after downloading ultra pack 2.0 until the price drops down a bit or sort out other things.

I'm a big fan of IL2, it's sort of the aerial equivalent of Arma 2, however there's no denying that its gfx are a bit dated now. WoP certainly takes care of the gfx, which are absolutely jaw dropping, but whether it offers the endless flexibility and realism of IL2 remains to be seen. I sure hope so.

I'm actually keen to buy it but a) it's currently only available from yuplay, a site/service I simply have no idea whether I can trust, and b) yuplay don't seem that big on (potential) customer service as they haven't answered any of my emails and they don't reply to technical issues in their forums.

I think I might just keep playing the demo and wait until it comes to steam (whenever that may be), or retail DVD.

?? Where did my post go?!

I commented I love love love the ground detail.

Funny how it helps an air combat game lol.

WoP feels like a great game, I've play IL2 offline and online many a time, but almost prefer this (very) slightly dumbed down version to play WWII aerial warriors.

Well I went to try to purchase but do not have a credit card (switch card) I can only pay if they had Paypal .. and there are a lot of requests for it in the comments.

Pretty bad to be honest they have purchase funneled via one type of card through one type of (not so well known) system.

They should open up their options and they may get more customers. Seems they are playing it all little too low-key.

Yep, its the main reason I haven't purchased.

Don't like the idea of a non standard transaction.

I thought I had read from several sources that Maddox had given the guys producing WOP the flying engine he'd developed for Battle of Britain: Storm of War, so I was hoping its engine would be a step forward from IL2.

Your comments sound entirely reasonable, so I'm hoping these missing elements are down to the fact that it's a relatively early beta, or it's a case of stuff that the WoP guys left out in order to make the game more arcadey.

Hope we get to see BoB from Maddox this year finally... .

Edit - WoP has just come out on Steam (UK). Bit of an easier way to get hold of it.

Well, I bit the bullet and ordered it via yuplay and actually had zero problems. This is a seriously good game and if the dev support continues (seems likely), it could evolve into one of the great flight sims.

Between Arma2 and WoP, the amount of actual productive time I spend on my computer is going to seriously drop :)

ok so i bought it and it seems fun but I have one major problem...running a sidewinder pro joystick. however when i try and configure it for use in game it is registering the x and y pulls on the stick as left and right and left and right as x and y...also it registers my yaw controls as a throttle...any ideas?

beautiful game.....

going to d/l it now.

only question is: do you have to set the AI to Veteran, give them a danger hint, and an echelon for the AI to shoot you?

bwaaahahaha

Personally I hate not having a DVD or a stand-alone install file.

Because of that, I generally don't touch Steam

Is the steam dl stand-alone? does it have to be activated?

Maybe something is wrong with your joystick, should get it tested...

I'm testing it myself...hang on that doesn't sound right either :S LOL....seriously though my actualy pc joystick works fine with il2 and rise of flight, even arma2 (although it is about 5 years old now) it just isn't supported by WOP which is annoying.
