Bunkers 0 Posted July 9, 2009 It seems every time I play russian/opfor side my weapons are full auto fire mode as default. Is there any reason for this? Also, if I switch to semi auto mode, enter a vehicle and exits it's automatically switched back to full auto?! My suggestion is that semi auto fire mode is default on all weapons. maddogx 13 Posted July 9, 2009 +1 This has bugged me for a while aswell.
mr_centipede 31 Posted July 9, 2009 I think i read somewhere that real life AK is defaulted at full (safety catch from top to bottom - full, semi, safe, or safe, full, semi)... cant remember where I read it... maybe it was youtube video... Gun experts probably better in explaining this
whisper 0 Posted July 9, 2009 Completely agree, really frustrating, more with the get in / get out thing resetting it to full auto. Default to semi would suit better
norsu 180 Posted July 9, 2009 Selector in most AK series weapons is following: Safe Full Semi Full is rarely used (except in movies) so I don't really know why BIS set it as default. Maybe a simple config mistake, nevertheless it should be very easy to fix.
Big Dawg KS 6 Posted July 9, 2009 What difference does it make what the default is? AK's don't have a high enough rate of fire that it even matters. Firing single-shots in full auto is practically the same thing (it might be slightly less accurate but I doubt it's noticable). The only problem is (that gets me sometimes) that it's traditionally been Semi as first, then Full ever since OFP and out of habit I sometimes put it in Semi thinking I'm switching to Full. But it takes so little time to switch back that it doesn't even matter.
Uziyahu--IDF 0 Posted July 9, 2009 I believe Soviet training doctrine, at least in the 80's, was to put out a large volume of fire during a swift advance. U.S. Army TraDoc was accurate semi-automatic fire, probably defending against the swift advance. The AK-47 is not capable of the M16's accuracy. Even in Iraq, U.S. soldiers have been picking up the AK for portability, knockdown-power, penetration and use as a "bush gun", raking tall grass and foliage with full-auto fire. Big Dawg KS 6 Posted July 9, 2009 Indeed, for me, Semi on AK is rarely used. So I actually prefer how it is now, I just have to get used to it being different from OFP... :p
NoRailgunner 0 Posted July 9, 2009 Its a bug if the rifles are switching automatically the fire selector. ;) Fire selector should stay in the same position like the player set it. Hope that BIS did fix this magic-auto setting.
chaplainDMK 10 Posted July 9, 2009 As pointed out AKs default setting (after safe) is full auto not semi. Realism :D
Deadfast 43 Posted July 9, 2009 IMO much better to have full auto (so you just shot a few extra rounds on the guy far away before you realize) rather than semi (a guy jumps at you from behind a corner you press and hold the trigger and only one round comes out). So yeah, I actually like it as it is now, much better than in ArmA :)

Although TBH firing modes are still not perfectly implemented in ArmA2 since right now they are just cyclable and not actual 'states' that you would expect a fire selector to have, so it doesn't even matter what's default (as it takes practically 0 time to switch). vshadow 0 Posted July 10, 2009 Pity the AI still seem to not understand the difference though, I had one shooting at a solid hill in full alto because of an AI enemy was behind it, which is not good as they run out of ammo quicker, and low and behold I got an “out of ammo†soon after :banghead:
Red_Barron 0 Posted July 10, 2009 If BIS has for the last nearly ten years made it an across the board default to start at semi for their previous Arma games, doesn't it seem odd that they would make a "mistake" on all of the AK weapons, but no other weapon system? ;) I'm pretty sure they did this on purpose for the reasons stated above. I still haven't gotten use to it, but the AK is a rather "foreign" weapon system to me (USMC uses M16A4/M4, so I'm used to using those). In a way I like how this simple change makes the AK all that more "foreign" in Arma.
An-225 0 Posted July 10, 2009 What annoys me most is the fact that you have to hit F twice to cycle through whatever you have in your inventory at times. This occurs only when the menu in the top right hand corner has faded away, and when I'm stuck with my AK on semi, with the need for it to fire full auto, its not fun. norsu 180 Posted July 10, 2009 Indeed, for me, Semi on AK is rarely used. So I actually prefer how it is now, I just have to get used to it being different from OFP... :p Only badly trained soldiers would use AK's full auto in a combat situation (excluding CQC) as it's very inaccurate and hard to control (been there done that). Tapping the trigger is a lot more efficient way to fire the weapon and is preferred over full auto anyway so I don't really understand why BIS decided to switch firing modes. Oh well at least it's easy to change in a mod :).
Bunkers 0 Posted July 10, 2009 Be it realistic or not with full auto as default it's still a problem that it will switch firemode automatically whenever u enter/exit a vehicle or use ur secondary weapon (ie AT).
nkenny 1057 Posted July 10, 2009 I think its a wonderful detail. Frankly tapping fire isn't all that hard anyhow.

galzohar 31 Posted July 10, 2009 It's also not hard to tap rapidly in semi-auto, especially with a mouse. Anyway, RL AK default (one closest to safe) is full auto, which is probably why it's the default in game.
LJF 0 Posted July 30, 2009 When I realized that the AK's in ArmA2 had this detail I was thoroughly impressed :D As for gameplay - it really isn't all that hard to change to semi you know, it's not like you're gonna spawn and immediately need to use semi-auto.
