BIS, get this tragedy with AI drivers in wheeled vehicles solved

Recommended Posts

Another finding: AI driver tends to run over you. If you call a wheeled vehicle to your position, make sure that you are far away from its (fuzzy) path. Last mission I was 3! times killed by my own Wodniks. One time I was at the middle of the street and called the Wodnik to a position behind me. And 2 times in the field dragging the Wodnik "in Formation", but you can not trust those AI tards. Instead of covering you, they run over you.

When it was over you, did you not feel covered? :)

I did a couple of convoy tests around chernarus.

Set to careless and compact column, the leader of the convoy (US trucks) did a pretty good job driving across all the country and back with only a few waypoints.

The only time it had trouble was doing a sharp turn in urban environment without hitting buildings, but on standard road it was fine.

The other trucks grouped to the leader had a more funky behaviour. Not terrible, but not as good as the leader.

HOWEVER, while on Utes playing a warfare mission, a supply truck killed all my teamates just as S!fkaIaC experienced...

So : Better, but still room for improvement...

The AI has trouble slowing down before going in to a corner.

It only seems to slow down once it's already too late.

lol, this is very similar to what happened to me in the 2nd scenario mission. At the end when you're getting picked up, hot on the heels from being shot in the ass, I get in the truck and he goes here, there and everywhere. Eventually we all got shot and the mission failed. That's what you get when you can't even shoot from the truck as he was driving like a spastic.

The driving has always been terrible with this engine and after this many years I wouldn't hold my breathe waiting for it to improve to a good standard.

Cant remember having any problems with AI driving 8 years ago in OfP

Same problems were in OFP, but we had much less obstacles at BIS standard maps.

I didn't play the game without the 1.02 patch.

Generally AI driving is fine but it isn't perfect

Turning around is tricky, the AI sucks at 3 point turns

Models are ignored by the AI be they other vehicles or people (poor AI old lady)

On a few occasions the AI will cut a corner and smack into a wall or something lol.

The only problem is that the BIS developer, responsible to code the AI driving capabilities and in special the 3 point turn logic, used this as blueprint:

Believe me, I've had my share ... if it wouldn't be so damn funny to watch it, I'd cry my eyes out ... when it happens to you after you spent hours of crawling around in the bushes, and the driver goes on tour de sight-e-seeing with you, circling the enemy and handing out binoculars so may watch better how the bullets pierce the glass you're staring through, .. if it all wouldn't be so damn hilarous, and tragic, and funny, and laughable, I'd throw the game outta the window by now ;).

it seams that if you make a very short brake(only tip "S") the car/tank is loosing contact to ground if you press then "A"or"D" you are spinning around, from car to pseudo plane, second think is the ai want´s to hold formation under every cost and correct for every millimetres so the brake bug if it is one and the formation hold under every cost coud make the problem.

Just throwning an example of the AI' driving skills. (I'm fully patched up). It was on the Dogs of war mission. 3 supply trucks, 2 coming up the road, the other heading towards them - going down the road. The 2 that were heading straight towards each other started to slow down, a good sign I thought, I saw the truck to my left start to turn to avoid the collision, will they? I thought, then the other truck started to turn to avoid. I grinned when I noticed them both turn in the same direction, to their credit they stopped, reversed a little, then did the same again, this time with a tiny little bump. They reversed again, turned in the same direction again, then the really funny part, I almost fancied that I saw the drivers both shout: "Oh bugger this", they then reversed a few feet back and both drove straight at each other. Meanwhile the 3rd truck kept banging into the back of the 1st truck, while trucks 1 & 2 just kept ramming, reversing, ramming reversing, with the 3rd truck doing the same to the back of the second truck. I watched for about 5 minutes, before putting them out of their misery with a rpg.

Place a BTR (or the american counterpart) on a runway, stright in the direction of the runway (on Utes that's 90°). Straight plain terrain with no obstacles...

Player as commander. Preview.

Order forward, order backward, order forward, order backward, you see the driver do what you want.

Now order a little bit left or right between forward and stop to go backward again.

And see: miraculously your driver has forgotten how to drive, he will go left and right by random while driving backwards. (no problem on the runway, but not while engaged in combat in a city)

Hell of fun if there is not enough space for his turns and he keeps crashing into walls and turning forever. k, not forever, until the vehicle is blown up because the AI was to stupid to drive straight backwards as ordered.

You know, the more time I spend on these forums, the more a question pops into my mind:

Who is the bigger cunt? BIS for releasing this joke? Or me for buying it?

Shared stupidity is half....hmmm....or doubled stupidity?

A Kingdom for a skilled Release + Testing manager for BIS.

Why do BIS as us to install the latest patch and then try? It isnt that hard to look that the driving AI is broken.

My Honest opinion is that its broken by design.

Pathfinding was horrible in OFP1 and it was never fiexed, though promised to fix.

It was even more horrible on initial relase of Arma1 (means it was worse than a patched OFP 1.96), got a liitle bit better after the beta-patch phase (~1 year duration).

In Arma2 its still the same as always.

I doubt it will ever get better at all. It will stay broken in that engine forever, that is my honest opinion.

Why im so pessimistic?

Its Simple, if it would be fixable they would have already done it in ~9 years.....

Eight years after the first installment of this engine, things have actually gotten worse.

I still play OFP. For me, neither of the Arma instalments have been up to the standard BIS set for themselves with OFP.

Seems they went all-out for appearance and neglected substance.

As per your sig mr.g-c, we can only hope that BIS rediscover the passion they had for OFP and apply it to repairing Arma2. Though I do wonder if this engine is a lost cause.

Im preaty sure this was probably suggested, but why dont you like make a road, 2 lines the AI always follows (each side) and each vehicle has like a elyptical "dont you dare come here" area witch the AI would avoid. And the offroad would also be like a "i wouldnt go here if i were you" zone or something?

---------- Post added at 08:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:14 PM ----------

Why are you even here then? Complaining day out day in. Fuck its annoying seeing your posts...

"Fix this problem or i wont buy the game"... WTF? BIS i will buy 2 copies anyway so dont worry. I'll pay for this looser.

Keep working on the vehicle path finding though BIS and see what you can come up with. ;)

Why are you so bitchy??? This is user feedback, the devs should look over it and maybe eaven find the answers in the wise community OFP has spawned...

The point of a game forum aint just "OMG ARMA2 is so fucking great im gonna buy 252323423 copies of it and give it to evrey pearson on the planet and then im gonna buy 3952035203502350 copies and give it to evrey animal on the planet (micro organisms inclouded)!!!!", or "wow last nights game was über sick".

Its here to guide the developers in the right direction witch the community thinks its best. The community is always right :D
