Grass layer gone?

Recommended Posts

@Placebo and others who probably wont understand either: The grass layer is that 'layer' of grass that appeared over distance in ArmA, so that grass gave concealment over distance.

It is gone in ArmA 2. So grass offers no concealment over distance for players. I don't know if it affects AI though.

Maybe BIS plans a new system?

Yep, that's just what I mean.

You know, I think that if you set terrain details to low (or very low?) where there is no 3D grass at all you should have the grass layer at all ranges and so that it somehow blocks your view too when prone. It's annoying that you can put your settings down to get an advantage over people who run it on higher ones.

Bf2 was like this, where if you took shadows out & detail on low, another player with higher settings would think they were hiding behind a bush when in fact they were standing out in the open because the bush isn't rendered at lower setting.

EDIT: Would be good if there was a serverside setting that would only allow people to have setting to a certain standard.

It doesn't sound like a bug, just a way that lower end machines can still run it with good fps. (Unless of course the grass layer is not implimented at higher settings)

arf, you don't need to report anything.

Looks like BIS is finally doing what they should have done for along time. Ie, the correct thing.

I believe AIs will be blind as Humans if clutter are in their sight.

For those who understand, i believe BIS are finally fixing the clutter issues :)

edit: Some info: Terrain Artists, Grass

Remember the grass overlay in A1 which was introduced in a patch? Basically what it did was elevate the surface texture some distance above the ground to simulate concealment.

@ Bravo6 and Silentkiller:

No the Layer was a layer which at distance obstructed parts of your model/vehicle whatever.

Without this "Obstruction" Layer you come to the Problem that you can recognize Guys as soon as they are behind the grass Rendering Distance (in Arma2 depending on settings up to like 75m), which is REALLY BAD.

And the Press did criticize and mentioned that numerous times already in the Previews but also in the Reviews...

@Optery thanks! That explains it better than my english explanation attempt :p

I just played on a server where a guy was prone in full view on a hillside which I knew was supposed to be covered in knee-height plants. Luckily for my conscience, I was killed before I could shoot him.

Thanks for the pics opx.

There are lot of things that BIS want to introduce in to this field.. let just wait and see where are the limits. Now, after ohara words, I have a good feeling about this subject now. ;)

We've got these Pixelshaders and stuff, can't we replace this layer, with something like edge blur on distance models?

Whatever they do, we need a solution. As it is now you can easily spot and shoot someone at 500m, but when you get to 50m and closer you can hardly find the body in the grass.

Already said what i was allowed to say.

Apart from the posted link, he said that clutters will block AI sight in a future patch (FINALLY). :D

If ohara intend to share more info and enlighten us a bit more about this subject, i believe he will personally come here and post something.

Good to hear it's being worked on.

Please though, PLEASE make sure that when you put it to very low you don't get a huge advantage. I hated that in Arma 1, people should have their view limited by grass no matter the setting.

Terrain Detail is a server side setting. Addons and scripting can change that, but it is default to have all clients the same as the server.

I thought only view distance is server side

Version 1.05 released and again no grass concealment...

My squad and me ran all over Chernarus to find any high grass areas... Nothing.

May be someone can tell where can we find a higher grass or may be how to test the concealment layer? May be we just didn't set up editor\game\server\mission properly?

Grass layer is not dependent on level of grass. Grass layer is the same if you are in either low or high grass. It doesn't matter. And you will notice that probably only on units which are in prone position. So don't bother to try, if you can hide crouching guy with grass up to his neck. No, that is not possible.

I'd like to know how in MP I could have no grass on any map.

I have an old machine and it just can't handle the grass.

I'd especially like to know how I could turn it off in any MP mission either with the init.sqf or the description.ext, or something. I JUST HATE GRASS.

It depends on the servers settings afaik and thinking of it it would be pretty bad for balance if some could just turn off their grass in MP dont you think?
