Will ArmA 2 support FreeTrack?!

Recommended Posts

It's perfectly possible to use Freetrack with a TrackIR clip or hatclip, and a 3rd party cam... and I believe there are other hatclip manufacturers in the market too...

+1

I use precisely that setup due to the decrased amount of hassle it requires vs. soldering the clip yourself. An easy and cheap way to setup a Freetrack-compatible system.

I built a little reflective sideclip with a pair of legs off old sunglasses, a small cableclip and 3 little plastic beads covered in reflective stuff off an old safety vest...

My cam was an A4Tech "nightvision" - it has IR LEDS, so all the clip does is reflect...

That and Freetrack works out at £15 GBP for perfect, hassle free Arma 1 headtracking... no LEDs, no batteries, works in any lighting conditions...

Since I didnt modify the cam in any way it also works as a webcam as well... a questionable bonus... :)

For anyone who can't be bothered building a clip like mine however, a Naturalpoint $10 reflective hatclip will do just nicely... and generate additional sales for Naturalpoint (with whom I am not associated :) )...

http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/02-products/product-accessories.html

That and a $20 webcam, a copy of Freetrack and you're headtracking - in Arma 1...

It would be nice to use it in Arma 2 as well...

bushlurker, you forgot to mention that the freetrack software itself is free under gnu :)

Iam using Freetrack also since a year and are very happy about it.

Bought a cheap webcam and bought a prebuild hat (with 3 IR leds)

that a user at the freetrack forums made available last year.

Arma 2 without the possibility to use Freetrack is disappointing.

My decision to use Freetrack instead of TrackIR is the over-

priced price of TrackIR. Please let us use Freetrack in Arma 2.

uhm.. well, arma2 does support freetrack, though indirectly

freetrack can create a virtual joystick, and arma2 can assign joysticks to track-ir axises

i haven't actually tried this out yet but i don't see any reason why it wouldn't work

PPjoy is used with Freetrack for that....

It's NOT x64 friendly.... uninstallable in fact....

With an x86 OS it should work... should..... however I can't try it myself...

Somehow I don't think it will

why?

-it will work but its probably not as good as a trackIR5 not reason not to support though

-main reason, naturalpoint is getting sales from this

What about starting to take a position like this BI? Or at least reveal your compromise with natural point, to give them full monopoly?

Guys, we already told you multiple times to stop the FT vs TrackIR accusations (against both sides). As you proably know, ED are working on a compromise:
Every joystick has standard software interface, that's why every joystick works in every game. For now there is no standard for head tracking devices software interface. We were going to add vendor-independent SDK in English release to allow every head tracking vendor (including FreeTrack) implement support of their devices for BlackShark. SDK has been removed from English release because of NaturalPoint request. Now we make agreement with NaturalPoint and we will release 3DOF version of our head tracking SDK soon.
source:http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=35002&highlight=freetrack&page=3

Ohhhh, but wait, you don't need to spend time developing a new SDK!... It's already available at http://www.free-track.net/english/

FreeTrack use many different interfaces :

one of them is TrackIR comptatible !

but if news games doesn't support this kind of interface, there are some choices :

- Developpers of news games use FreeTrack SDK to make a FreeTrackclient compatible interface (SDK is free and open source for everyone and include in FreeTrack 2.2.0.279 release...)

- TracK IR compatible interface can be use ?

- Mouse emulation can be use (not the best solution as well)

- Keyboard emulation is used to control camera ...

- Joystick emulation is used (with PPJoy driver)

So i don't see any other solutions to use FreeTrack ....

EDIT :

- I have forgotten Simconnect interface ....

source:http://forum.free-track.net/index.php?showtopic=1775&page=1

Even Microsoft as released Flight Simulator with SimConnect...

BI please give us some input about this, don't pretend that you don't know that this thread exist... we have been supporting you by buying your games, could you at least reveal what keeps you from giving support to a free 6DOF interface with ArmA2?

I'm one more disappointed with the lack of Freetrack in ArmAII.

I think BIS might reconsider. So, the people may ask together, in one voice:

Support Freetrack in ArmA II.

I registered to post to this thread.

I am in support of FreeTrack, the more open-source APIs there are in the world, the better.

ive been playing around with it for a bit now and there were moments where i got it to work with freetrack (barely)

i used PPJoy to simulate a joystick and assigned the axes to the corresponding analog-look-command. (after deleting the mappings to all the other interfering stuff, they map PPJoy to a lot of things, some of which are rather questionable...)

i never got smooth head motion and for the most part it was unusable. i tried to fiddle around with the joystick calibration in ArmA2 but got tired of it.

the big problem is that whenever i reopen the controls menu ArmA is kind enough to remap PPjoy to all its default actions and since those are a lot to be deleted and you have to reassign the whole damn thing again its not very attractive...

if anyone else had more luck im sure many would welcome if you shared, myself included.

btw i use Vista home premium 32bit, Freetrack 2.2 with a reflective headset clip

Bushlurker. yes sry you are right. i used freetrack in arma 1 so i was a bit frustrated to see that its not working in arma 2. i dont buy a track ir cause its overpriced and i dont want to support their monopolist behavior.

but here some facts for the minority majority question

41534 downloads for freetrack 2.2 so far

51463 for freetrack 2.1.1

no info on the early versions

up to 1.000.000 hits for their website

you can find hundreds of videos on youtube related to freetrack.

for me its a challenge to build up and improve my own tracker. its fun.

so pls bi give us a official statement to end this speculation.

oh btw arma1 is listed in the compatible title list. some kinda advertisment for you? imagine armed assault 2 appears in this list.. it will get you "some" additional customers.

Bi had a good working interface in Arma1 but replaced it with a broken encrypted interface in Arma2. This makes it pretty clear they are willing participants in the head tracking cartel.

I don't know how BI is associating itself with such company, it seems that trackir is still only supporting 4DOF in ArmA2, and they are advertising full support (6DOF) in their website.

I guess we can only start ignoring games from BI and wait for better ones from EA (Battlefield).

This really sucks.

Gamereg: I kinda doubt BFBC2 will support any tracking device at all though.

Eta for such game is approximately 2299, aka. ain't going to happen within our lifetime :)

I think Gamereg is just expressing fustration over the whole situation. I'm sure we know Arma 2 is going to be awesome, which makes shutting the door on FreeTrack users even more aggravating.

this really sucks... i use free track for about 4 months and i was even considerig buying a trackir because their 6dof is better.... but after this??? wtf, i hate monopoly... i wish all the bad to NP, and i will never buy a trackir in my life!!

trackir users dont want free track to work because they feel bad after wasting 180euros on something that i got for free... so they become jelous

i hope the new OPF supports free track!

I will mail them right now to talk about this monopoly and the number of ppl wanting to keep using their free tracks instead of payinga ridiculous overloaded price for a trackir giving strengh to this monopoly.

BI is who you should be venting on, not other users, and not Naturalpoint for putting restrictions on their own software not to be abused.
