solidsnake2384 10 Posted November 26, 2011 (edited) When do you know you need to buy a new power supply? I currently upgraded with a gigabyte z68 motherboard and a intel core i5 2300 processor. My PSU has been good so far but now i want to buy a new graphics card. I dont know if I should keep the power supply or upgrade. My current PSU is a HEC brand 500W. This is the graphics card Im looking to buy. http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=41125&CatId=3585 Another question, would that be a good graphics card and how much difference would I see in gameplay? My current graphics card is an old GT 240. Edited November 26, 2011 by solidsnake2384
froggyluv 2136 Posted November 26, 2011 Personally, I steer clear of that 550 ti http://www.anandtech.com/show/4221/nvidias-gtx-550-ti-coming-up-short-at-150/5 underwhelming.... For a few bucks more, I've seen 460's close to that price after rebates on Newegg or go AMD.
solidsnake2384 10 Posted November 26, 2011 (edited) How about this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130571&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Video+Cards-_-EVGA-_-14130571 And should I change my PSU? Or keep it? Its a 500W HEC. If I can keep the PSU then I can buy a 560 instead. Edited November 26, 2011 by solidsnake2384
froggyluv 2136 Posted November 26, 2011 500w is minimum needed for 560ti so it's your call- personally I'd grab the 560ti
solidsnake2384 10 Posted November 27, 2011 Guess im gonna need a new PSU. Mine doesnt have the right pin connectors. Im searching some power supplies and some have 6+2 pin connectors. Does that mean it has 2, 6 pin connectors?

Does that mean it has 2, 6 pin connectors? Real badass gpu's have 8 pin connectors. the 6+2 just means you can use 8 pins but also 6 if your card only have 6 pins. PuFu 4600 Posted November 27, 2011 * the GTX 560ti has 2x6pin connectors afaik * my HD6970 has one 8pin(6+2) and one 6pin connectors. anyhow, i can't stress enough the importance of a good and reliable PSU....

humvee28 10 Posted November 27, 2011 Should be. A Brand which i can highly recommend is Silverstone, especially their Strider Series (i own a ST75F-P). Great Quality, cool, silent, efficient, stable Output, and very Safe, due to solid Protections.
GOLGO_13 10 Posted November 28, 2011 Hey guys! I've been looking for a GPU, but was searching only for GTX models. What about the Radeons in general? Are they any good? (I've heard they have problems when using Crossfire in Arma, is it true?) Thanks! :)
solidsnake2384 10 Posted November 29, 2011 My friend used to use Radeons but he always had problems with them. Wouldnt work properly, weird color patterns popping up but then he switched to GTX and havent had any problems. I just stick with GTX. If youre looking to buy a GTX then buy the 560. Yep, that will run the game at fairly good settings.

Yep, I think a mixture of medium and high settings will work, but you'll have to tweak the view distance and some other settings to balance performance vs. visuals. Best to ask for some help here on the forums when the time comes, since the visual settings aren't always intuitive and some are hidden in config files. :)

As long as they are same model, yes. The downside is that you will not get the advantage of 2gb as SLI will default to the memory config of the lesser card (the 1gb card in this case)
rycon1 1 Posted December 3, 2011 Would really like to know if my computer can run ArmA with decent graphics and runs smoothly. thanks very much in advance for your help. :bounce3: Here are the specs processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2GHz Quad black edition (3.6GHz+O/C) memory: 4GB DDR3 -1600MHz G-Skill HDD: 500GB SATA-II 7200RPM Western Digital Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GT 430 1GB PCI-e 16x DVD: 24x DVD+-RW burner, all CD/DVD supported Motherboard: ATI 770 Biostar 6USB PCI-e 16x Sound: Integrated 7.1 Channel ---------- Post added at 10:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:30 PM ---------- by the way if there is any upgrades that i can add it would be appreciated if you shared your ideas
Maio 293 Posted December 4, 2011 (edited) Yes it should. Be sure to set post processing to low or turn it off and don't go crazy with the view distance. There is a dedicated forum subsection for questions regarding ArmA 2. You can find it here :) BTW, CPU=procesor ( in your case your X4 955) not the entire system. GreenGiant 1 Posted December 4, 2011 So my parents are more than likely going to give me $100 max for Christmas so I was wondering if the following will run ARMA 2 and if so at what setting and FPS? Processor AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Motherboard ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 Memory Corsair Value Select 512 MB (2x 256 MB) VGA eVGA 256-A8-N340-TX Geforce 6600 256 MB Hard Drive Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JD 80 GB Optical Drive LITE-ON Black 16X DVD-ROM Power Supply SeaSonic S12-330 ATX12V 330W -Thank You
NeMeSiS 11 Posted December 4, 2011 It may start, but it will not be in any way enjoyable. My previous CPU was already a dualcore and faster per core than the 64 3000+ you chose. The ram is barely enough to run windows7 on, and the GPU... I cant be bothered to look up if it supports SM3.0, its too slow anyway. Do not buy it.

PuFu 4600 Posted December 4, 2011 by the way if there is any upgrades that i can add it would be appreciated if you shared your ideas I would get a proper video card. That means either GTX versions from nvidia (460/470/480/560TI/570/580) or AMD 6850/6870/6950/6970 - the bolded are your best bang per buck. A2 is NOT going to run on it (6600 does NOT support SM3.) 100$ worth upgrade is not gonna change that (and you can'r really upgrade anything without getting a proper PSU first).
