USEC C130 Hercules

Recommended Posts

Yep, I kept the samples real low to get a quick render out. I'll be doing proper samples for the final bake to texture.

Cool stuff man, looks really neat, but one thing that always bothers me with aircraft is how nobody makes the edges of the windows a bit round. Just a quick chamfer can do wonders to looks. It's a small detail, but I think it makes a nice difference.

But in the case of the C-130 cockpit glass it wouldnt be very accurate.  All the forward glass is square.

@icemotoboy

You may want to take another look at your flaps.  The C-130's flaps dont cut into the upper surface of the wing.  crazy_o.gif

Thanks RKSL, I realised I made a MASSIVE boo boo with the flaps and have reworked them a little.  I'll post some screens later today and if you could give me your thoughts, that would be appreciated.

I've been doing a rough bake of the interior textures, currently 9 lots of 512x512, at a low sample rate.  Here are some flat color (no shading, so shading is in texture) that will give an idea of how it will currently look in game.  I'll be animating as many of the levers as I can.  Anyone who's flown a C130 before, please contact me as I need some more info.

That'd be much better for performance if you combined them onto one 2048x2048 tile. It'd also give you space to do the rest of the interior, or to enlarge some of the other details...

if possible you should script the seats to have pilot - 2 flight crew and the rest have the option to get in back

Well, good news or the bad news?

Good News:

- File binarizes a-ok, at ~35mb

- Considerable progress made, with animations, textures, and interior

Bad News:

- Best I've got at downrezing my textures is 4 x 2048^2 for external, and 2 x 2048^2 for the interior. Any less and I personally think the resolution is not acceptable. I may be able to get the exterior down to 3 ^ 2048.

How you can help

- Should I do two versions? A Hi-texture version and a low texture version? This would be simple for me to do. Keen to hear thoughts on this, particulary from hosting sites (whats the mechanics of hosting two versions of this, will it be confusing to users, etc...).

- My config settings for the C130 flight envelope aren't right. Anyone have any suggestions? Any ex-C130 pilots want to take a stab at testing it?

Here's tonights fruit, got the cockpit in game for a flight test smile_o.gif Binarized!

not sure if it's you flying, or the AI in those last shots, but keep in mind the Captain/Aircraft Commander usually sits in the left seat, co-pilot sits on the right, on modern fixed-wing flight decks.

I personally think you should release the high res version or both. But if one person has the high res and say the server has a les res will that kick that person off? And ya pilot is on the left co-pilot on the right and flight eng at the back. cant wait this looks amazing. Any rear cargo hold pics for us HAHO guys?

I confirm that your work looks incredibly amazing. I will be one of the first to grab the addon when released ! thumbs-up.gif

Having a hi-quality and low-res version would be useful I think. There is no problem for many hosting sites I don't think and the average user will identify the differece. Looking great so far. thumbs-up.gif

once again I am here to say the same thing I have been saying all over this thread every once in a while: AWESOME work, man I wish I could fly that allready, what kind of containers you will make? the standard ArmAs or some new ones? smile_o.gif And how many parachutes will dropped container have? 4 would look cool biggrin_o.gif

Those Yokes, (think thats what a plane stearing wheel is called lol). Could you not use the anim for driving a car, so it would look more like the pilot was holding the Yoke, rather than a joystick style control? Or perhaps model the yoke closer to the pilot?

Just a thought.

Looks dam good though.

Cheers

Big updates:

wip_080826_1.jpg

C130 flying on lean mixture (no trails)

-----------

Major progress in pretty much all areas. I've remodelled the flaps to include the inner flaps. They are independently animated, and move backwards and angle downwards at the same time, to ensure the effect is similar to what I have seen when researching the C130.

wip_080826_2.jpg

C130 getting ready for takeoff, notice the two sets of flaps deployed

-----------

After no joy getting exhausts to work on the engines through the engine (appears to only work for vehicles and ships), I decided to script my own in.

wip_080826_3.jpg

C130 with flaps down and engines at full power

-----------

I have nearly finished my base textures, in grey USEC markings. I will be producing variants for camo and etc... if I have time but I won't let it hold up the release. I have Specular, Normal, and Detail mapping on the body.

wip_080826_4.jpg

Detail shot showing rendering of engines and textures up close

-----------

The cockpit is fully animated, I am modelling the gauges with as much attention to detail as I can (including rotating numbers in the altimeter). I will be rebaking it once I have finished modelling.

wip_080826_5.jpg

I am animating all gauges that I am putting in the cockpit

-----------

The cockpit provides great visibility, and I am hoping to have a rudimentary VOR/NAV script in place that allows you to place VORs and use them with the HSI I have put in. The navigator will have the ability to set this for the pilot. This may not be in for Alpha.

wip_080826_6.jpg

The USEC C130 is going to be very much a multi-crew vehicle

@ icemotoboy

Sorry mate the flaps are still wrong.  The upper surface of the wing is all one piece.  As i said before the flaps do not cut into the top surface. Eg:

Looking excellent ! A very nice piece of addon you have there. This cockpit is a beauty !

Suggestions : support for random numbers and different roundels ? If you manage to do rotating numbers in the alti, this should be a problem wink_o.gif

Good job !

whoa, really? that sounds awesome! just the thought of doing true IFR flying using just the 'dash' is making my head spin! any chance of a working NDB to go with it? lol

hey this looks amazing! The level of detail is excellent, would it be possible to make each engine catch on fire so if one of the engine takes enough damage then that engine catches fire, with smoke pouring from it, just a random suggestion i just thought up while twiddling my thumbs at work.

Its amazing to see that 3rd party creators and fans of the sim create better models than the original authors of the sim... excellent stuff, keep it up!
