m4 w/ACOG hits easier than M24?

Recommended Posts

Am I just that lame with the M24? (don't be snarky).

I hit what I aim at with the ACOG site on the M4 just about every time. The scope works how I expect (on targets usually over 300 or so yards away).

On the M24, the 1st shot is always my "ranging shot" to see where the bullets have decided to go today. Then I have to walk my fire onto the target.

while walking my fire onto a target works fine for a SAW, it kind of sucks for a sniper rifle.

Even with a non-moving target I still have to aim low and to the right to hit.

Do I just need to create that sniper rage and spend a few good hours on it?

Why is the ACOG so easy to hit with? banghead.gif

Sniper rifles are zeroed in at a longer range, I don't know if that's your problem but thought I just might add it.

just to continue Opteryx's comments, what ranges are you using the M24 on?

300 out to about 600 or so. I think.

It isn't just the bullet drop though, I have to aim a bit to the right of anything.

If I aim dead on I miss high and left.

If I put my cross hair low and to the right of what I want to hit, it do better.

While I understand the low/high stuff based on ranges. The off center to the left is bugging me.

it also seems to vary a lot more than the ACOG.

Really wish they had a range finder in game.

would make for a great sniper support role.

um, you can range your targets using the Mildot on the M24 sight.

not quite sure on the figures as i'd have to spend 30 seconds to find them, but you should be able to range targets with the scope's mildots.

M24:

< 300m - aim low

~ 350m - aim center

> 350m - aim high

No math, not evidence.

Just from the top of my head.

just keep playing with it and get used to it. I remember in OFP I memorized how far I have to put sight up for the m21, SVD, law, grenade launchers and RPG. Hitting moving BMP's and soldiers at 600m and farther was easy.

That's strange. I have no problem with the M24 but with the M16 ACOG I hit on the left side of the vertical crosshair. (only just but enough so that I can see the round impact without moving). The m24 fires straight and true for me.

Maybe time to get the ol' ramrod out? biggrin_o.gif

maybe some of you should try the realistics ballistics mod.

For me its the other way around, i was starting to do pretty well with the M24, leading those warping targets over long distance in MP and even scoring some hits out of scope range (bellow the last mil dot).

The acog rifles are crap though, their (in)acuracy is randomly spread thru 3 hit points (left, center, right) and i have come across situations where i have a target in sight and im shooting waiting for 1 round to finally go straight, sometimes ending up with a perfectly acurate AK round or RPG in the skull. I'd Rather use the M240 or straight M16 than anything with a scope/optic in it.

Speaking of accuracy at distance, is it just me or has the G36 become FAR less accurate since OFP? I just don't ever use it now.

I have some issues with the AGOG, but find it usable.  The G36 seems to go wide right...then wide left...while the stupid at stands there oblivious.

That or he's just laughing at me... icon_rolleyes.gif

There are 2 G36's (thise 2 different sahrani commando's both have a different one), the short one is horribly inaccurate.

Aren't there 3?

36 - full length

36K - carbine

36C - compact (or commando, shortest)

G36 standard rifle seems pretty accurate to me got some quick medium distance kills using it on BerZerk.

Using the M16A4 Acogs requires too much adjusting under and over the crosshair in my opinion the bullets drop too early and drop either side too much time for my liking.

M24 sniper rifle seems very nice to use and quite accurate no probs using it.

I dont know if its the same in ArmA but in OFP the bullets would go to the left if you were prone on a surface leaning to the left. Thats because your rifle was leaning the same way the slope was. You may think the bullets would hit to the right of the scope if your weapon is leaning left but thats only true for shorter ranges. At longer ranges the bullet should end up lower and more to the left than you expect if you are on a slope leaning left. As I said Im not sure its the same way in ArmA but I suspect it is.

Thanks, did't know they shot differently in game. I will have to go back and give it another try to see if it changes my view.

Weapons i never play with:

M4 acog with M203 > inacurate/doesnt shoot straight.

M16A4 acog > inacurate/doesnt shoot straight.

G36's (all 3) > inacurate/doesnt shoot straight.

AKS74 PSO > inacurate/doesnt shoot straight.

M4 aimdot > bad over distance, irons are better.

M4 compM2 > bad over distance, SD ammo is no good.

AKS74U SD > bad over distance, SD ammo is no good, big recoil.

The l33t gear all sucks, the SPR is the only exception imo.

I think you named just about all of the non-sniper weapons.  My big problem is that everyone, when given a choice, chose the m4 variants over the m16A4s.  The m16A4 is noticably more acurate.  My other problem is with the pistoles.  They are useless in anything but a VERY tight urban situation.  However, who can resist that new HK M23  wink_o.gif  pistols.gif

The aiming drag and recoil are too sluggish on the m24, also the stupid tracer and the added zoom make it feel as if you are shooting a slow moving round...

Are the accuracy ratings in the config files actually different between M4, M4 aimpoint, m4 ACOG etc? Do the sights change the accuracy ratings?

It sure seems like the m4 ironsight is FAR more accurate than the aimpoint.

somehow I also don't understand why in the campaign you almost always get the M4 aimpoint instead of the M16A2. I thought the M16 is still the Army's standard rifle?

Many weapons, especially handguns, suffer from an unexplainable dispersion. I scripted a solution for it some time ago, it removes the dispersion of the weapons you use, leaving you to deal only with the ironsight or reticle. You can get the accuracy script in my sig.

You don't have to script anything, dispersion is adjustable in the config. The dispersion of every weapon is twice what it should be, but I'm pretty sure that it's halved, and thus correct, if you're laying prone. The pistols and Gatling cannons do have too much dispersion, though.

The dispersion of the default weapons depends on fire mode, as well. Your weapon will have twice as much dispersion if you set it to full auto, even if you're firing single shots. This can also be changed in the config.

As mentioned earlier, my Realistic Ballistics mod fixes all of these problems. biggrin_o.gif

What was said about scopes is also correct. The default optics are poorly calibrated, and the bullet will land two or three pixels (on a 1024x768 screen) above and to the left of the crosshair. The SPR scope is completely wrong, in that changing zoom level will actually change the weapon zero. On top of that, the mil dots aren't really one mil apart. My ScopeFix mod (same link above) fixes all of this, and has redrawn optics that actually look like the real scopes to boot.

ArmA's bullets actually don't drop anywhere near as much as they should, contrary what's been said in this thread. My ballistic mod makes all the small arms bullets drop almost exactly as much as they do in real life, as verified from multiple sources and with a ballistics calculator.

The more I use it the more I love the ACOG, Generally I use one of the 3 snipers M107, M24 ,SPR for long ranges, ACOG for middle ranges and any Ironsighted weapon, usually an MP5 for close combat
