fitzee 7 Posted March 27, 2007 Except for the lack of flat forest land, IMHO Sahrani is the best island yet. I've always wanted citys like these. In OFP (as much as i loved the game) the textures sucked, the towns were kind of crap, Â and the city on Nogova was lame. Now that I have Sahrani and ArmA I cant make myself launch OFP anymore. Scrub 0 Posted March 27, 2007 exhibit A:Full size (Pico de Perez looks ridiculous) Come visit Norway, nothing unusual about that  Now I would agree with that if that was grass hills made of earth it certainly looks weird, but notice there's a rock texture there which seems pretty realistic compared to the topography where I live, I think the lack of "jaggedness" in the terrain where there's rock textures is the main factor making it appear unrealistic. I agree.  for the terrain. And also... Finally... Odd formations exist, as Opteryx said, in some places those would be called normal.
Dylan 0 Posted March 27, 2007 Sahrani is actually pretty cool. I just think we lacked a very good campaign which made the island feel like something meaningful. OFP had the best SP experience ever, and I actually never played one multiplayer game the whole time I had it. I would think once an expansion comes out, we will either see A: a new campaign on Sahrani. or B: Another great island with a campaign that will not disappoint this time. Odd formations exist, as Opteryx said, in some places those would be called normal.  Of the links you give, two aren't as steep as Perez.  The third is nowhere near as tall. [/nitpick] But sure, steep places exist.  I happen to live near Devil's Tower (think Close Encounters of the Third Kind).  Places in Hawaii are really really steep (Nuuanu Pali for example).  Both are rocky.  The Pali is quite eroded.  Pico de Perez looks weird for being so steep and smooth (as was mentioned above).  That and the perfection of its conicalness.  Mt Fuji (and formerly Mt St Helens ) is known for its symetry.  Pico de Perez is similar, but three times as steep, and it looks weird.  One won't find a mountain like that. Some other spectacular locations: Machu Picchu Three Gorges (and Lesser Three Gorges ) Stone Forest Guilin Huangshan Ha Long Bay The Matterhorn Yosemite They still don't convince me that Perez looks believable.  Smooth, symetric, steep, meh.  Sahrani doesn't look either glacier carved (Matterhorn, Norway, Yosemite), Karst (Ha Long, Guilin, Stone Forest), or volcanic (St Helens, Nuuanu Pali, Devil's Tower). Now I don't mean to make a big thing of it.  The game is great, and for the most part the island looks good, I just miss flatter forested land, and think Perez is overdone. Heatseeker 0 Posted March 27, 2007 Except for the lack of flat forest land, IMHO Sahrani is the best island yet. I've always wanted citys like these. In OFP (as much as i loved the game) the textures sucked, the towns were kind of crap, and the city on Nogova was lame. Now that I have Sahrani and ArmA I cant make myself launch OFP anymore. Whats lame about Lipany? It was one of the nicest towns ever imo, its not massive like the Arma towns but it looks nice and full working (a.i. dont get stuck). Arma towns are big and detailed but not so natural looking, you have bases built inside cities that look weird (you could shoot at them from the tall blocks) and buildings that look out of place. Nogova was diverse but in a more natural way, the way towns and small villages mixed with farm land, diferent forests and hills was perfect. The small towns also had an advantage, they didnt feel so empty and if they were it was more credible . Everon and Malden... well there is something special about these that i cant explain very well, i'll leave it at that.
fitzee 7 Posted March 27, 2007 I was referring to petrovice. Its hard for me to explain why I found the towns strange. Maybe because the way houses were just placed haphazardly on the same lot. The city didnt seem like an urban area, again buildings all placed on 1 lot, no sidewalks or anything...just wierd to me. But yea Lipany was somewhat better. Of course the old islands are special to you, by now you probaly know them like the back of your hand. I think my favorite old isle was the war torn Koglujev(cant rember how to spell it). Either way we will have these islands in ArmA soon enough. I only hope they bring them up to ArmA standards(graphic-wise). Today for quick fun I placed 34 squads(306 units) on a valley riddled section of north sahrani and had a crazy-fun lag-free firefight. The kind of thing I always wished I could do in OFP. Sergei_Q 0 Posted March 28, 2007 Petrovice was, I think, meant to model that kind of East European suburb: high rise concrete apartments in a neat row. Not very eye pleasing, but neither is the real deal! To me even Lipani was too small and too open, you could easily from one side of Lipani to the other. The cities in Sahrani have these great narrow allies with garbage bins and car wrecks, lots of walls etc. blocking line of sight that take street fighting to a new level: advancing 50m may become an accomplishment. Also, they have more elevation differences, which makes it somehow "exotic" after the flattish towns in OFP. (Modern cities are normally built on as flat locations as possible to save in building costs, while old towns were normally born either around a fortified hill or by a waterway.) Mind you, OFP maps were wonderful as well. I'm looking forward to seeing Malden and Everon with proper trees and textures!
icebreakr 3159 Posted March 28, 2007 Sahrani is great but you need a lot of time exploring it to use it efficiently for mission making. Personally, I think a good level designer might fix a lot of it, so we're waiting on tools to create new islands that fit our wild mission fantasies
privateguba 0 Posted March 28, 2007 Just a small somewhat offtopic question: Has the vehicle's fuel comsumption been tweaked to fit the islands bigger size? I ask this because in OFP the weeled vehicles had a very high fuel comsumption, maybe to add that "make believe" of a compressed "big" terrain. But when on the bigger user made islands the fuel would run out unrealisticaly. I'm sure even a Hummer can make more than 25 kms on a full fuel tank. From screenshots, Sahrani looks like it has much more "clutter" as in vegetation, rocks, and other assorted bits for more cover for infantry than OFP islands. That's just my guessometer though. To me Nogova also felt emptier, somewhat more artificial than Everon and Malden.
sektor 2 Posted March 29, 2007 I think Sahrani is great, but the issue here is we all knew every step of Everon ( the best island in OFP, addon or official, maybe Sarugao comes near to it, Nogova was lame, half product, no feeling of the real thing at all), because there really wasn't so much of content in it. In Sahrani there is so much more content that brings the feeling of real world. I haven't been to 75% of Sahrani towns yet, so lot more to explore and get farmilliar with. Maybe too steep in the north and no industry zone are the thing that bother me. With the this kind of foliage and tree placing ( no forest blocks i think, i ran tank trough the forest like knife trough the butter ) this could be great for Vietnam scenario island. Btw, Everon was made from the real life island Krk in Croatia, and i think the other two were also made from real islands, so that could be it what made them good. vovi 0 Posted March 29, 2007 When i first played ArmA, I was quite upset. I felt alot of the atmsophere has gone from the game. There is something about malden, everon and nogova that seems very real. perhaps, it is as previously suggested - its because they were based on real locations. To be honest, i dont like the sahrani setting, i do prefer green shrubery and dark woods like OFP. The big towns are nice, but the ai doesnt really work in urban battles. In OFP theres a real feeling of isolation and quietness. When some sort of island tool comes out for ArmA ill be straight onto making OFP style islands again. Jffsieg 0 Posted March 31, 2007 I personally like sahrani, not as much as Malden or Kolgejuv or Nogova, but i do like it. The biggest thing i cant wait for is for BIS to release the tools! so that we can begin to make our own islands. The amount of buildings, and powerlines, and, well everything will make Island building so much better from the get go becuase there is already so much to work with I cant freakin wait for the tools!!!!!
