MI24 HIND : is it worth starting one ?

Recommended Posts

Very....very nice...I love the rivets and how the aircraft looks like its seen action. Another plus is that you shaded all parts correctly, definatly going to be watching this.

I'm fairly new to Arma Addons but I'm a good modeler.

I wanted to make a hind, since there isn't any in the game, but I was wondering if that would be plain useless since probably 50 people or more already have one ready to fire (like RKSL Merlin or Afrographix Chinook), without mentioning the guys porting OFP:Elite stuff in Cold War Rearmed...

On a side note, if someone has a Good blueprint of the hind, that would be welcome (All I found so far are crappy gifs)

Thanks

Edit : I found some decent blueprints

Edit 2 : I'll have a look at the kamov

There is already a really good HIND mod in the "Addons & Mods: Complete" forum for download.

Yes we know there is the RHS, at the risk of sounding bad however, this one just kind of looks better in terms of appearence of usage.

Just because it already exists doesn't mean we won't recreate it, I mean there is already an 'AH-64' out there with the BIS model being used, is that stopping us from working on one that looks more accurate? Nupe.

Its all a matter of tastes, what looks good to one person may not necessarily look good to another, and we all prefer difference appearences and aspects, for me I like some dirt and wear on the vehicles, RHS hind doesn't have that, this one does which is why I lean towards it more. Not mention that in terms of performance, this should perform better than the RHS Mi-24 considering it has only two textures versus the RHS "OFP" style texture system, also makes it much more friendly towards normal and specular maps.

Thank you guys for the support.

Basicaly, there is no specular map yet, nor transparencies. In the meantime highlights are faked and baked, just as the soft shadows. Hard shadows should be generated ingame.

There is already a greyscale bump map that I will turn into a normal map. It's not very obvious here because I didn't want to overdo the effect (5%)

As I have a small number of maps, it's easy to make new ones. So that you can paint a new camo in 5 minutes in plain colors, and then slap the shadows and dirt on top of it and tadda : a new color scheme ! If it feels too dirty/clean you can adjust that as well. Same for markings (red star, shark teeth etc...)

When it's released it will be a piece of cake for anyone to do it's own pet version.

That would be great!

I dislike the "if speed = x and height = x then gear down" script stuff.

Great work btw.

Now, If someone wishes to help me configure it, I can provide the model and PSD with layers...

hi, i helped with shadows Mi24 and i would love to help with this one.. since its actually a better "arma" model (not saying one is more real then the other, but this use less textures and so on).

However, i will be back on friday. If you still need help, PM me or something and I will help you.

Scars Mi-24...its Scars Mi-24 that was given to RHS..

http://ofp.gamepark.cz/index.php?showthis=7318

By the way EricM, I was wondering, are there any tutorials you studied to get the wearing to look so nice?

Curious because its very easy to make the vehicle look underused or even moreso, like it would be found in a junkyard, but you seem to have it down.

No secret here :

- layers + very low opacity brush with dark brownish-grey.

- Start with a very large stain-like brush all over the model to do some random strokes to break the surface uniformity. Adjust opacity.

-Then medium soft brushes for smoke stains, general weathering. Still low opacity.

- Small brush concentrating on the intersections, rivets, angles etc... where dirt and water could accumulate and leave stains. A little bit of smearing can help selling water dripping.

- Keep it on a separate layer, you can play with layer modes like multiply/overlay to see different effects...

Sorry for the delay,

First I was very busy at work, then moved to another country, then holidays, then work again etc...

To reply to some concerns, it's not dead, and though it got some dust in the past 4 months or so, I got back on the project last week when I saw that the tools were out.

Current status is as follow :

- Exterior model done, including various geometry lods (actually about 10 lods, from hi-poly to very low)

- Mapping and texturing done (color, bump/normal) except for specular map.

- Pilot Lod (Cockpit) : Modeling 80% done, UW 80% done

- Gunner Lod : Modeling 25% done

- Cargo Lod : same as geometry lod, Need to fine tune UV and textures.

Then I'll probably hand over the models to someone with better config and scripting abilities than me otherwise you might just wait for Arma 2...

Hello,

I have been gathering information on the Mi-24 (and other helicopter systems). I would like to pass on some of this material to those developing improved hinds for this sim. To start:

While hinds were largely immune to small arms and flown fearlessly they were not entirely invulnerable. Many military doctrines (eg. West German) state that any weapon is to be used against slow, low flying aircraft. It improves playability to have a hind version that is vulnerable to small arms.

Hinds in Afganistan often carried heavy machine guns and grenades for self defense. They also carried extra rockets so that the crew could partially reload their pods in the field.

Most Russian rocket pods have very high dispersion. This is often overlooked but very important for accurate modeling.

It would be nice to see hinds with doorgunners, 10 x 100kg bomb payloads, rocket dispersion, and a few other weapons in the future.

Some references that may be of use

Some reading:

An excellent set of articles (good weapon info can be found in other parts of this site):

Some drawings:

P.S. the Hind naturally looses some lift due to the stub wings when it is hovering. It peaks in forward flight where the wing anhedral easily pulls the helicopter into turns. There is a risk of the rotor striking the tail during abrupt maneuvers.

Slowly... but in the right direction I guess. I'm in contact with more experienced scripters to get in ingame before Arma 2.
