VOIP Suggestion

Recommended Posts

It's very good that the game has VOIP. The "push to talk" button is a very good addition as well. Do you think that maybe, an ingame mike test could be implemented under the Audio Options?

Thanks.

Also a bit more configurability would be very useful. Currently i prefer using teamspeak, because it is faster and with all the keybindings, options like whispers or talk to the "channel" family make it more realistic. Expecially in large scale battles as we have them in the NATO GC it is better.

Then, it would be quite handy to deactivate some channels for some person or bind the activation of some channels to objects/weapons to simulate a radio operator.

The deal would be "just" to add frequencies in hertz and different transmitting methods (UHF for example). Now the large scale battles would end up pretty messy, as platoon 2 is on the same channel as platoon 1 (on side channel) or on the same channel as group 1 and group 2 (on group channel).

Hmm.. I never used VOIP in ArmA...

How does it works and how is the quality?

to start off it is quite an interesting thing to do, as your ingame muppet lips will move with your words, and that you not only hear the speech from the "radio", you also hear the speech if you get close to the speaker(that whats good to have a built in VOIP system)

OFP also have a similar system, but its lags so much due to the fact that the net code couldnt really handle this, ArmA also have some problem about handling and would affect by ping quite badily, but is more usable now

Is it possible to disable the radio and only have the "muppets" speak? So you can use TeamSpeak as radio and in addition talk soldier to solder (muppet to muppet) ingame through VOIP?

As far as I know, its not possible "in game"

But I know a few people who plan on doing so, for certain mods.

This is one of the features which are recently in the development for the next patch.

Will you make it possible to disable the radio and only use speech? That would be great!

Does this development include some options to split side-channel communication into more than one channel?

YEEeessss!!!! Thank you, I've been propping that feature (direct mode) from OFP to my buds... nice to see it going in.

I assume changing to 'direct channel' will do that.

Radio chatter like military radio would be much interesting to have in-game rather then this feature. smile_o.gif

What do you mean? Random radio chatter? That would get annoying, like it got annoying in ECP. The AI already gives you all the information you need. I like the proposition that the BIS team is increasing the radio functionality... not like it was broken before! I'm just sorry that players can't be trusted with radio squelches. I'd really like to hear them after players speak, but can you imagine if BIS implimented such a thing? All you would hear is 15 year olds keying their mics and giggling as you're solely trying to vote them off in a characteristically apathetic player population.

"Ee-deetdeet" "Ee-deetdeet" "Ee-deetdeet" "Ee-deetdeet" "Ee-deetdeet" "Ee-deetdeet" "Ee-deetdeet" "Ee-deetdeet" "Ee-deetdeet" "Ee-deetdeet" "Ee-deetdeet" "Ee-deetdeet"

i know what you mean but its only really good if you're in role and if you're not and you're just talking casually over VOIP with some mates it would be irritating with the *end transmission sound* (all i can refer to it as lol)

VOIP should be improved for next patch... so hopefully it will have some nice new settings ( i havent read specifics about the improvements...)

Couldn't check this yet:

For example, me and 2 other players are in a tank. If i switch to "vehicle channel" and talk via VoIP - would my crewmembers be the ONLY guys to hear me? (so the other world would not hear me speaking)

The same question goes to the other channels - side, team, direct...

Just checked... looks like it works! Why haven't i used it before? crazy_o.gif

It really could be the first built-in game voice comm sys to be really convenient (for me at least).

Hi all

I do not undertand why more people on the servers are not using the ArmA VOIP especialy Coops. It also makes a massive improvement in PVPs like CTF.

I used it with two CTFs the first with some good effect and with the second on a different server we had a plan in minutes the previous battle on the same server we the visiting public lost badly 5<>0 against the servers reident clan; the second with planning and coms we won hansomely 3<>1.

Kind Regards walker

This is a request for BIS for Armed Assault.

Simple Radio Simulation/More Channels.

I have seen this request so many times but rarely with a good explanation of how it could be implemented. I was just talking with fellow players and we came to a fairly good idea on how it could be done.

We currently have:

Global

Side

Group

DirectSpeak

Vehicle

Imagine if we could have:

Global

Side

Channel 1

Channel 2

Channel 3

Channel 4

Channel 5

Channel 6

Channel 7

Channel 8

Group

DirectSpeak

Vehicle

The channels work in the same way group works, however the 'group' is everyone logged into that channel.

E.G. - Jim and Kim are in channel 1, John is in Side.

Jim and Kim can hear John and see his markers.

John cannot hear Jim or Kim. He cannot see their markers.

You would need a new key for switching channels most likely. Or possibly a radio GUI that allows you to switch channels, and sub channels.

Basically, this allows for a complex chain of command to be set up very easily. It is also not a major change to how BIS has it now, so I imagine it is possible.

how about some sort of text to speech capability using your chosen profile voice? although dont think thats able to happen because itd take lots of programming i'd presume

What sort of hit does the server take to run VOIP? Would it be better to use TS2 on a different server?

As long as the in-game comms have nothing to offer even approaching teamspeak (whispering, channel commanders, multiple channels, bandwidth efficiency) then I can't really see the point in minor improvements to it.

About, oh, 6 months ago I made a plea for the voice/chat system to have "hooks" left in to it by the developers. They didn't have to make anything just leave the hooks in so a mod maker could have radios and voice chat be dependent on: channel, equipment held, distance. And if you were really fancy, terrain/jamming-equipment in between.

And?

In order to get anything noticed on these forums you need a lot of shiny pictures behind you.

Fact > Interlectual debate, reasoning, logic and validity of your opinion mean bollocks all here.

Fact > You need pictures of yourself kitted out in l33t airsoft garb before anyone will respect you.

Fact > Your addon needs to have at least 5000 polygons, 4 addon dependency errors and textures so lividly bright you could see them from the moon before anyone will download it.

Fact > Everyone who says they are a 30 year old US marine with a beautiful christian wife isn't. Same goes for German special forces who have the politics of a 14 year old liberal socialist.

Highly Likely > We will not see the locality bug fixed before we have 600 M4 SOPMOD addons.
