Fall is a disapointment, but if it means a better product...

Delays do not mean better products. Companies not sticking with schedules just means that the developers have either screwed up or the product is just too crappy to be released. The worst examples probably are daikatana and battlecruiser 3k. Duke nukem forever and stalker are probably join this club if they actually come out someday. yay.gif

Having OFP:E delayed this many times is truly worrying.

The problem with having both a mainstream difficulty and a hardcore difficulty would be that the game needs to be designed to both. If you look at it, it's near-impossible. Let's say (I know this is probably exaggerated, but just to make it simple) that in the mainstream difficulty-setting a player can take 10 shots before he die, have unlimited ammunition, not effected by fatigue/injuries and has auto-aim. The mainstream player still wants to have a challenge, so the mission designers will probably give him a challenge by having a redicilous ratio of friendly/enemy soldiers per mission. Now, just think about playing the same mission with hard difficulty settings like no crosshair, no 3rd person, no GPS, etc. sad_o.gif

This of course also works the other way round. The mainstream player will get bored by only having to fight a couple of squads per mission. He's playing the game like an action movie so he expects to face as many soldiers as in, say, Call of Duty.

I think that's a really good point.

And as others already mentioned, by improving the game for the main-stream gamers, BIS loses time for improving the things, the community wants...

I didn't see one confirmation, for things the community really wanted... Let's just take the the Multiple Gunner Positions...

I tried to tell everyone there wouldn't be multiple gunner positions, no commander MGs, but no... "bah... what does he know?"

(Just had to get that out of my system).

If AA is a disappointment, I'm just going to stick to ole OFP and put Llauma's heads on EVERYTHING. Then, I'll run it with ECP and that DMA cargo firing script, with my 7900GTX - it'll be BETTER than AA!

That's not really true. ArmA will offer everything OFP has when it comes to realism, most likely even more in many aspects. Sure, OFP was as close to a mil sim you could get back in 2001. The difference is that we can except much more from a mil sim now, but ArmA isn't a mil sim.

The gfx engine is still far superiour to the old OFP engine. Even though OFP has some high poly/res addons they will never reach the level possible in ArmA. The game will probably perform much better than OFP too.

As Game2 will offer a totally new engine it would be stupid of BIS to create lots of new features for ArmA which still has to be remade if used in Game2. The reason why they decided to release ArmA is because they figured that they can't make a completely new engine for each game they release. So ArmA will be based on the OFP:E engine. Even the tiniest changes might 'cause huge difficulties so they won't do that unless it's absolutely necessary.

On otherhand, now as ArmA won't be as revolutionary as OFP once was it will have some competition from other games such as Enemy in Sight. I still do believe that ArmA will offer most realism of all the games available but you can never know what some good modding might do to a game like BF2.

Why BIS is wasting time adding the gameplay level of "funny bunny goes to the military" i don't know, when the problems every reviewer had with OFP:E was graphics, nothing else, most reviews liked the unforgiving nature of the game ... if they could look past the tank models from 2001 (they were pretty awsome tank models back in the day).

That's why there's that 'if' in front of the statement.

Isn't it possible that they re-evaluated ArmA against it's rivals/community's desires and decided to improve or at least throw on some polish and optimize the code?

Only BIS knows the truth, we can only hope they will use the time wisely.

As for being able to accomodate mainstream and hardcore types of players, OFP had quite a variety of options.  How many more variables and option flags would it take to lock down the crosshairs (yuck), increase the number of units per enemy squad, make the players MG's shoot like a laser and the enemies like a shotgun?  And again, how many different types of MP servers could there be?  Just as before, there will be groups getting together because they like the style of play on 'that' server (ECP, FDF,EECP, Y2K3, FFUR, ect.) It will just be more avenues people can go to in ArmA to enjoy themselves. I see it as a great business move, as long as BIS keeps the capability for realism, as is stated in the article.

About realism: I just read some about Red Orchestra, a pretty realistic WW2 FPS, and read that if they hit your leg then you will get a LOT slower(like in RL biggrin_o.gif ). So, it would be nice if this was in ArmA(of course only on über-pro-hard level).

There's no really point in writing this reply, just hoping a modder is reading this. smile_o.gif

ehm... i guess it's more realistic to fall down and start crawling like in ofp. besides, there are already lots of addons with "bleeding scripts" where you need to get some first aid after being hit, or you will probably bleed to death. however, i don't see any realism in walking after being shot in the legs, unless you carry lots of morphine in your rucksack of course smile_o.gif

all those "features" were taken from ofp, not the other way around whistle.gif *adoringandsometimesexaggeratedbutoftentrue*

damn, guys... BIS is just trying to earn a living... cut them some slack. they want to make a 'hardcore' sim, but i'd be surprised if they could feed their families from that alone. so they make a 'hardcore' sim with some "remove this pain in the ass" options to survive. better that they do that then go out of business? i dunno about you, but i think so...

not that there's anything wrong with voicing what you'd like to see in the game... just understand that unless you're having the work custom tailored to yourself as an individual, or doing it yourself, it is impossible that it will be made 100% to your desired specifications (and even if you were doing it yourself... i'd like to see you make something closer to your preferences than they are going to wink_o.gif). you can't ask them to tailor several thousand hours of labor to meet only your own desires, for ~50 bucks. you are the minority. you are not capable of providing BIS with food, water, and shelter. but i am sure that the deviations from your desires will only be slight... so just wait & see what comes...

besides, if you'll get this worked up over a game, it might be healthy for a tragedy to occur in your life... sorry

dunno, but if theres ever any stupid kids jump into my beloved server not knowing what the letters "COOP" stands for and started to tk everyone else then start yelling "yOUrE oWm3d!!!!!!1111" or "wH3r3 th3 **** is th3 ****ing fL@g" i will just simply hit the "boot" opinion on the screen

well in that case I would like to have a 'TERMINATE' sub-option for booting/kicking to terminate their copy of ArmA, preferably terminating their digital life would be more proper but its a god given right..

I don't understand what the problem is about it. Like others said ArmA will be a SIM, but, AND YOU CAN DO THAT WITH EVERY SIMULATION, you can turn off special things or turn them on.

Has anyone from you ever played IL2 and its addons. with such WW2 AIRCRAFT SIMS you have a whole list of options you can enable or disable to make it VERY easy (I always use this option) or make it VERY hard so you (well ... ME) won't even be able to start the engines of the machine.

back to ArmA:

everyone who wants it HARD uses the VETERAN MODE (or how it will be called) ... and SERVER should do that too.

the rest of the article sound very promissing .. and better then I expected.

and all those who say I GONNA BUY ENEMY IN SIGHT huh.gif do you know anything about the game huh.gif there are 5 screens and more or less no info. well I don't mind. maybe it will be good too. who knows.

I will buy ArmA because it is OFP ... with some nice updates.

That has to be one of the most stupid things I have ever read on these boards...seriously this entire debate has sprung out from mainly ONE word in a interview.

If it was a wide and well written preview close to release ok I admit I could understand but now I really don`t at this point what all the fuzz is about.

well I dont understand you either, there cant be any switches which can open room to MAINSTREAMERS, can you tell me how many people are playing IL2 (Ive played)?? and can those switches in IL2 bring more people from arcade flying games?? NO, because FPSHOOTERS and SIMSHOOTERS are totally different, OFP has too much detail for tactical and realistic gaming while BF kind games are only for fast close quarters combat..

and my personal opinion is, utilizing OFP engine and its AI for BF players (pukes grrr) is a MAJOR WASTE, like flying chimps in first class

How many people have to explain that ArmA will be scaleable, if you want(and yes you want) you can play it on the same level realism which is in OFP. I can't even belive how flexible your faith is to BIS, which is sad. crazy_o.gif

Leopard, if you want, then go buy Enemy in Sight, maybe it will be a good game too, but I doubt it will be as good as ArmA. And when ArmA comes out you will see that. band.gif
