Ofp...dead?

is it just me who is thinking this....

I uninstalled OFP awhile ago because things were getting real slow in terms of productivity and new things. I reinstalled it when I saw that things were getting better (philcommando got me reinterested with all of his restriction-breaking addons). I was really getting excited when I saw the Halo mod getting fired up and it seemed as though the mod was really hopeful seeing as how the modmaker seemed to create a new thing for the mod everyday. Also I was excited about ECP 1.075 when they started that thread up and said the release date would be in "days....." . I told myself that I would stick with ofp for a very long time if these things were released because it would make the game a new one all over again. However, both of these projects seemed to have lost their pulse, and I once again face the decision of whether to uninstall of the good times i have had with OFP.

Now i know it seems childish, and maybe even awkward, that i care so much about this game, but i learned many things from this game, and it inspired me to mod many other things (mostly xbox games). Also I had this game for a LONG time.

I was just wondering if anybody else has thought or felt the same way as I....

I feel almost the same way. The game is 4 years old and its age is really showing now. The physics are awful with prehistoric dammage ;) model, graphics mediocre even with the latest unofficial upgrades, the AI is seriously flawed, the coding itself seems to be pretty bad - the game hiccups even on the latest and fastest hardware ...

Some bugs and flaws have dragged on since the initial release and they are making the game really boring. I wouldn't care so much if OFP2 was close to release, but I believe we'll be stuck with OFP1 for a long time. I seriously doubt we will see OFP2 next year and I'm pretty disappointed that BIS doesn't feel the urge to release a new patch for OFP1. sad_o.gif

I uninstalled OFP a long time ago - so I don't play it anymore.

Actually I have no game installed on my computer, I just use it to surf the net and listen to my CDs. tounge_o.gif

BUT when Invasion Phase 1 is released, you can bet that I install OFP immediatly...

In general, don't pin your hopes on new mods. Something like 1/20 (I'm not joking, it's probably around there) succeed. OFP at the moment for me has a feeling like we're all just sat around waiting for OFP2, which is an atmosphere I don't like as it over shadows all addons being brought out. I think if more missions were made, then the life of OFP would be extended far beyond the release of OFP2. So no, you're not the only one thinking OFP is dying, but then, what other people/mods are doing should not effect your enjoyment of the still-great game. smile_o.gif

There is still a lot of things to look forward to in OFP, from various teams, so addons will not stop being produced, the quality will not go down, it's just how long you personally want to spend waiting for them (and I dont mean follow Keller_777's lead and hound mods) that will keep you in the OFP community or not.

For me, I'm relatively new to OFP editing so it's really just come alive recently, I just need to improve at it.

For players, using an addon in editor for 5 mins then never using it again must be boring, but that's where mission makers come in, and if the players themselves made more missions and swapped them, as I said, OFP would continue for years.

So is it dead? It depends who you are and what you want out of OFP and what you're willing to put into it.

Sorry for rambling. it's 99% BS i know.

You are right about the missions. There are just a few who can make really good ones like mapfact etc.

But in my opinion the missions are somehow always the same, because they're mostly Spec OP- ,Special Forces- or something like that missions.

I hope Inv44 will make it more that it feels that you are just a small part of the whole mission/ operation - a normal grunt so to say.

I think your problem is in understanding that all this mod makers have a life of their own with the problems and comitments asosicated to it.

None of the named mods(ECP,Halo) have call it quits they are just in a delayed status and we should respect them for their efforts and wish them the best.

Operation Flashpoint still has a tremendous pulse in it and a unique feature for it's age.People are still intrested where to purchase it because in terms of what it can do no other game has matched it yet.I have a quite optimistic view seeing a strong community and surprisingly inovative mods that still manage to bring something revolutionary to the game every now and then.

RAAB will keep me using OFP for a very long time (hardly touched VBS1 because of the squad).

i dont think 4-3yrs down the line the producers where expecting such a hit in terms of the support by the community and people making numerous addons to cater for every ones needs....

One thing that does annoy me is that they try and give the impression that VBS is some-thing bigger, better and is a totally different game to that of its brother OFP.  When bought ive herd it can be a disapointment... especailly to those whom play single player as the play back option can be a bit useless

I felt the same way, its especially provalent amongst addon makers anyway, we get burnt out modding for a game which we end up with no time to play.

Going to end up pimping my squad again but its true, the solution for me has to have been to get into playing. I guess this really became possible once i got Broadband, and set up RAAB with Munk. I now play OFP again and its the most fun ive had in ages, its kind of revitalised my interest in the game. I still will be modding but combining it with play will mean i have an active interest in the game rather than making stuff and never playing other than putting myself on desert island to test if a config has worked ect....

Short version is, in my experience the solution to getting bored with the game was to play more. Particually online Co-Op (i did some CTF when i got BB just to get back into it and hated it - Co-Op with what is essentially a bunch of mates on the other hand....). I suppose the main advantage of online co-op i found was the total non-linarity and almost endless scenarios. We also especially make our operations with extensive replayability, so even playing the same mission 2x will be totally different each time! wink_o.gif

Aye, having to replace the voice.pbo with OFPs to get the bloody AI to work was a bit of a pisser crazy_o.gif Until BatDev! gets some decent terrain out I'll be playing OFP.

The comment that all the missions seem the same is true on another level besides the method the user takes.  All the animations, AI, graphics, control limitations are -exactly- the same.  When changing to a RPG, or reloading, we are all holding still.  When we have line of sight with a target, we are almost always totally exposed.  Upon contact the formation of enemy react almost exactly the same.  When an armored vehicle's dead, it will always explode (I know, not TOTALLY true, but close! tounge_o.gif ), It wont typically just sit there and smoulder, yes it has happened, but it's very rare IMO.  It's these 'always' things that have no variation that makes the most exciting mission seem repeatative.  No leaning and peeking from cover, no running reload, no alternatives to give you a moments edge in a firefight.  Some alternatives to the basics would be nice in OFP2.  (I still play CleanSweep when I need a quick fix, so you're talking to an addict biggrin_o.gif )

Gotta throw my two bits in. Someone gave me Operation Flashpoint v1.46 in January of 2002. They got it for Christmas and they couldn't figure it out, let alone run it properly. My roommate and I spent about a year figuring out the editor and the game in general with no outside help/influences. We spent a lot of time setting up simple engagements in the editor and coming up with objective-type missions. He moved away and I got broadband, so I've been checking out all of the addons. Whenever I describe OFP to someone, I say remember those plastic green army guys we used to play with? Imagine if you could set them all up and then tell them to kill each other. I really enjoy putting together air/ground battles and watching to see who wins and how. I agree the AI is a bit stupid but I haven't found a game where they're not. Anyway, lateley I've been doing some playing online and trying to compile some of my mission ideas. I've of course found that there is a world of knowledge out there on mission editing. I've convinced my roommate to buy the game and he does lots of 3dMAX work. I do some textures but mostly sound. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that besides just play-time, OFP offers years of stimulating and rewarding editing and modding. OFP is one of my top three hobbies in both enjoyment and time consumption, second from writing stories and working on my car. Just some thoughts.

I started to play this game two months before this christmas and must say that it is incredible!

But...

it's all depending on the ppl doing the SP and CP missions...depending on the missionmaker this game stands out. But bad missions where the advantages and "feel" of OFP isn't regarded, well, they suck as all mainstream games...

I don't think this problem is to do with addons only, as the amount of addons released (both present and past) is incredible large IMO. Since it is about OFP in general (and as I said, not addon related only), I am moving this to General.
