Valve's computer spec survey

Recommended Posts

Valve did a survey of all the Steam users and what their hardware specs are. A good source of info if you want to see how you stand in terms of hardware compared to everyone else. Or I guess, at least compared to people who play Valve's games.

A couple of key figures (quick summary):

Average CPU: 2.0 ghz

Average RAM: 256-512 (no big surprise there)

Nvidia Users: 64% - ATI Users: 27%

Most popular graphics card: Geforce 4

Intel: 51% - AMD: 48%

Language used: English 90%, French 5%

NTFS? 75%

The complete results of the survey:

The Geforce MX cards and Fx5200 are a suprisingly popular. Sure, they have a good price. I guess these users are under represented in public forums.

Sweet, my system kicks everyone's ass. Of course, the fact that this survey mostly encompasses the machines of people who just can't let Counter-Strike go is not especially encouraging.

I was pretty amused when Marek asked us what we had RAM in our systems and I answered 1 GB. He smiled and said he had not that much in his developement pc. That made me feel save for a while  biggrin_o.gif

Although I doubt that NVIDIA has that much part in gamers PC´s. I love my Radeon.

Edit : Typodevil

More RAM & better gfx (Radeon 9600 pro) - I guess that will be fine for quite some time. No upgrades planned till the OFP2 release (and then it'll be 64bit anyways).

I'm surprised I'm among the minorities in that survey when it comes to cpu and ram (P-IV 3, 2GB ram) but among majorities in video-card (GF4TI4600).

I'm not surprised that the GF4-series was/is very popular. It sold alot in its time and is still a good card today.

People are out there playing CS on 2.0 Ghz + machines, and I'm running OFP and FB on an overclocked P III 733? What a waste of computing power! crazy_o.gif Makes me want to cry sad_o.gif

Sorry but that is ABSOLUTELY UNREALISTIC

<table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">Language

English 503,020 90.63 %

French 27,174 4.90 %

German 7,647 1.38 %

Spanish 7,169 1.29 %

Simplified Chinese 3,592 0.65 %

Traditional Chinese 3,351 0.60 %

Korean 1,658 0.30 %

Italian 1,429 0.26 %

Unknown 1 0.00 %

Chinese and eastern european nations MUST take much more of the pie. Not to talk about India and pakistan. Absolutely ridiculous! French, second most used language? LOL and spanish 4th BIG BULLSHIT THIS IS!

I hear that! crazy_o.gif People buying monster Alienware PCs and using them to play CS, for crying out loud!

I would be doing OK except for my CPU, it's 1 ghz. It works as a bottleneck for my 768 megs RAM and Radeon 8500 videocard...I guess I'll be updating in about 6 months or less.

Aah, I'm far below the average there and my humble budget keeps me there for a while too wink_o.gif. Well, I'll just save some euro's till a few weeks before the OFP2 release date, that way my money will have an optimal efficiency biggrin_o.gif

In addition, they need expensive mice that support abnormally fast movements... a regular optical mouse makes them say "WTF, this mouse is broken"
