Operation frenchpoint release

Recommended Posts

It might be worth noting that all the documents on that CDES site I looked at had PDF files in French AND English. Very interesting reads! Especially the amphibious ops training (Operation Catamaran).

Right, but are they actually used in airborne infantry operations?

IIRC the last French airborne op was in 1978 into Kolwezi, Zaire, led by the 2e REP. I'm pretty sure they used C-130s. I remember reading a US Army History Center booklet about the op, as it involved Belgians and French and was a classic example of an airborne assault in the third world. There were only a handful of casualties for the whole operation that rescued several thousand Europeans.

If I remember correctly, the Kolwezi Operation Bonite May 19th 1978 was made from C-160 Transall aircrafts. 2e REP 1st, 2nd and 3rd Cie and an element of 13e RDP where parachuted north of Kolwezi. 4th Cie/2e REP was airdropped the next morning east of the city. the operation lasted till the 27th, securing also several other villages in the vicinity of Kolwezi.

The REP had 5 killed in action and fifteen wounded. The rebels lost 250 men, 2 AML-90, and a lot of armament.

Especially effective where the "designated marksmen" with sniper rifle FRF1.

Lessons learned:

Speed matters:   When conducting recon with light armored wheeled cars, take full advantage of their speed when in close contact with RPG equipped enemy forces.  It was only when I slowed down that a RPG hit my vehicle (or very close to it) and the team suffered casualties.

True!

Speed really dos matter.

I was a scout in the army (in a Recon Battalion) and when we were out there was some rules.

Here some of them;

(Rules used whit Mercedes 240D GD scout version *this can be used whit the armed P4)

IN CONTACT.

0-50 Meters, speed to full, fire all weapons, dont take time to aim, just point in the general direaction and shoot like crazy.

50-100 Meters, stop the vehicle! Wile the LMG (mg gunner) provides suppressing fire the driver and Observer (dude in back) gets out of the vehicle, OBS & Driver start shooting when they are at the ground, when the Gunner hears the 2 men shooting he gets out and take the MG (on the GD its a MG3) and start fireing. If possible the driver gets in the vehicle when the gunner shoots and revers the vehicle in full speed to safety abt 200m away (last safe hidden location from enemy fire)

100-> same as abowe but the driver sometimes shoots from the vehicle.

Other version of 100-> Gunner shoots like crazy and the vehicle revers to safety (noone gets out)

This were my 2cents for now ;)

ow BTW i still look forward to do some cooperation whit oure units (Danes and French... like in Kosovo..)

Ran,

ça fait un moment que je n'y était pas allé non plus. Je n'ai d'ailleurs pas lu tout ce qui y est disponible; il y a des choses intéressantes?

For those who want to read more, there are other publications available on the CDES site, here

All the publications are both in French and English.

-Horrido

(in short i told Horrido that there are a lot of field manuals available from the CDES site in a certain section of which i'll send the link to horrido, it's all in french, .PDF format, with few to none illustrations)

Err.. A&Dcomplete rock.gif .

I cant believe i finaly have a Puma in OPF, i used to see them fly over my parents house when i was a kid, one small thingy though, when inside the helicopter (1st person) i can hardly hear its engine and rotor sounds, sounds very quiet compared to 3rd person view. And the damaged textures and crash sounds are really awsome, great stuff smile_o.gif .

I actually like the quieter sound inside as its less annoying then having the engine and rotor sound screeching in your ear for the whole ride.

But I agree the models and stuff are fabulous. I especially like the Puma Pirate. It is by far I think the most effective helicopter if OFP for close air support as they seem to have done a good job in configuring it so that it's priority is to target enemy troops. Normally when I call one in for close air support it blows away quite a few enemy soldiers. The only thing that comes close I think is the BAS MH-47 Chinook which does a nice job of this with its minigun as do their MH-60 blackhawks.

I have to say that it's a wonderful sight seing that big Puma Pirate coming in low strafing enemy positions. I also love how the Gazelle sounds as they pass over your head at full speed. smile_o.gif

Miles Teg,

I really appreciated your comments about the use of the french vehicles, and tactics to be used with them, and especially the part where you're saying that you're doing a mission with OFrP addons, seeing how you speak of it, I have the feeling that the mission will be a good one.

I find the idea of multi-nationality operations very interesting.

That would be something great to do in multiplayer, doing a mission with three sides:

for example, a side for West with Canadians, or Norvegians (or whatever), a side for Resistance (like the French OFrP soldiers) allied to the West, and an opposing force for the East side.

Each of the West and Resistance side would have each it's own briefing for a combined operation, and the East side (opposing force) could be played either by other players, or AI.

Anyway, Miles Teg, if you're doing missions with the OFrP soldiers, we would really appreciate if you could leave a message on the English forum of OFrP, to let the french people not reading this forum, know that a mission is available for them to play. Also, I'm pretty sure that you would find help there if you have any questions about the french army and it's tactics (there are french military people reading the forums, and they might be of help to you) or help to translate your briefing and voices in french if you want to do a multi-language version.

I advise every non-french peoples doing missions with our units to visit the english-speaking section of our forum at NdF/OFrP to tell us of their work, and to ask for help if they should have any questions.

At the moment, the english OFrP forum as just a few visitors, but don't hesitate do come say "hello!" as many french are speaking some english and could be happy to help you or answer your questions. The OFrP forum is not made only for the french speaking peoples.

We at OFrP hope to see missions being done by non-french peoples featuring the OFrP addons, and would appreciate to hear of any multi-national operation scenario, or French Foreign Legion missions, as the FFL are always very popular and could probably attract more peoples to play with OFrP addons.

That whole idea just went horribly wrong for me.

LOL!! Architekt, that was funny reading that link. I think they were just messing with ya, not seriously flaming ya or anything.

Horrido: Yeah I definitely will use your forum. Right now I"m trying to concentrate on one mission but I need to learn a few things such as ranks in the French Army. I saw one for FFL troops somewhere but I'm not sure if it's the same as the rest of the French Army.

I would do custom voices, but my recording equipment isn't hooked up to my computer at the moment and even if found the right words in French, I'd probably butcher the pronounciation. What would be useful however is a pack of phrases in French as a .pbo file.

In the mission I'm concentrating on right now, the French soldiers are going to a small town in Tonal to escort some Tonali civilians to election polls so that they can vote. But they get attacked by militias who don't want them to vote and you must protect them. I'm just trying to figure out how to end the mission, before I start working on cutscene movies for the intro and during the mission. As for MP games, I'm not too good at making those, but I'll make my missions at least somewhat playable in MP games.

Also if you have a link to any .mp3 web sites with French music, that would be cool as well as I always like to put custom music in my missions. smile_o.gif

Architect,

LOL, this is was a typical french bad temper due to a case of mistaken identity. Talk about French hospitality !

I believe uiox really didn't intended flaming you, he just have mistaken you for an other person.

Actually, uiox is a very nice person, but one with a very bad temper smile_o.gif (although it doesn't last very long )

Actually, the french usually take pride in being called names like "frog", so I hope the english peoples are feeling in the same mood when they're nicknamed "rosbeef" biggrin_o.gif

Remo (if I remember well) have made a PBO file with french army songs.

For the idea of the pbo with french voices, Raphy had started a complete mod of the voices in OFP for the french, but we have no news since about one month ago.

Also, there is the voices made in french for the Komoe mission. If I remember well, AF-mod has recorded a lot of voices for this mission. Perhaps it could be possible to ask them to borrow at least some of the voices they recorded?

Also, there is still the possibility of french peoples at the OFrP forum willing to help to record voices for a mission (a lot were willing to help Raphy, and they might be interrested to give a helping hand in recording voices for a mission) I think many french players of Operation Flashpoint would be delighted to see more missions involving french troops, and might be willing to do the voices.

And why not a collaboration with the peoples from the OFrP team? our partners from the FAR are doing missions and voices for the official OFrP missions. I don't know if they would have time, but it woud be worth a try.

What I would like to see is brand new French voicesets, like with the Finnish ones in FDFmod. So you can give orders in French aswell as Finnish. There might be a problem with using the two together though...

And yes, I want to see more realistic French combined arms missions. Or a few realistic very detailed peacekeeping missions, it would be lovely if you could ask people with experience in French military operations for advice on realism and atmosphere et cetera.

And also, I have to say French people are really hospitable and kind! During my visit in Paris everyone was very kind even though I can barely say "Where is the toilet" in French. I even caught a ride with a few friendly Parisians after the bus to Chantelloup (or was that Chantelloup de Brie... I always forget) broke down. But the first thing I saw when I got out of the airplane at CDG was a Frenchman standing with a Baguette under his arm tounge_o.gif

nothing beats french bread smile_o.gif

in the morning with butter, jam and marmalade and/or dipped in your coffee/chocolate

in front of the TV with ham or dry sausage and cheese or butter

at lunch time after the main dish with some good cheese

sandwiches made with baguette are simply awesome. Nothing beats a fresh warm and crunchy half baguette with ham, Gruyere, butter, dry sausage, pickles and a few salad leaves (that's my own "super complet charcuterie-gruyÄre")

well .. i'm getting a bit carried away there .....

back ontopic, i'd be glad to help you Miles smile_o.gif

Yeah, quitter sounds when inside vehicles is such a great thing. It makes playing multiplayer on servers with disabled external view a lot more interesting as you can easily communicate with your team without having to yell (or be yelled at) in order to talk to others. I'd wish that more addons would feature reduced engine/rotor noise.

Afterall most people inside very loud vehicles, especially tanks and aircraft would wear protective headsets with integrated comms and thus won't hear the engine noise that much anyways.

Thanks Ran! What I think I'll do is finish the basic mission and then once that's done I can PM you with a link to it so that you can beta test it and provide recommendations for improving the mission and making it more realistic.

Thx!

When you try to do the best, don't care about compliments.

Don't speak english very well, an other fault : a little bit big crazy I'm am.

Not completly crazy. Totally. Absolutly.

Don't care why you do.

Don't forget my masters. wink_o.gif
