Lock on: modern air combat

Recommended Posts

Damn.....Those screens are awesome....Can't wait till I can put a Cuban Air Force skin on that MiG-29A. Just like the one I got to walk on top of as a kid smile_o.gif.

BTW, here's a fan video one of the moderators for the Lo-Mac forums made. Not much we haven't seen before, it's a compilation of the development videos, with some real life footage, to the sound of the Soviet National Anthem. I think it's really well done though

One thing that struck me about the original Flanker - how well the ships were modelled. This was in the days of the 486 - and you could see details such as the radar following a target in the sky. Plus you could set up a bunch of ships on opposite sides in the mission editor, and enjoy watching a nice naval battle. They were a bitch to take out too - they had some of the best SAMS, and extreemely powerful radar controlled guns that could easily shoot you - or any single cruise missile you launched at them. You always had to launch a few missiles at the same ship hoping the defences would get overwhelmed. Back then though, all the ships in the game were Russian-built. Good to see some US ships, we can have some kickass naval battles now smile_o.gif.

Quote[/b] ]I hope the ships in Harpoon 4 look as good... if that game ever comes out.

Yeah, I can't wait for that game either(what I really want is a Fleet Command 2). Ubisoft seems to have trouble w/ release dates(H4 is currently being developed by Ubi(it started out w/ a different developer) and they've delayed it several times.)

THe one on the left is probably a Slava class cruiser(from the missile launchers, and the missile it self which look like a SS-12).  Hmm, is the one on the right a Tarantul(it looks like a SS-22 coming from it)?

When I was checking for the names, I opened up Flanker 2.5, it didn't have them but, look at the difference in quality between the LOMAC ones and these:

slava.jpg

tarantul.jpg

It's kind of hard to tell w/ the first one since it's so small and the LOMAC one was only 1/2 shown, but you can see a huge difference between the LOMAC Tarantul, and the Flanker 2.5 one.

Not so hard to tell with the first one, just search for Slava Moskva 126....as for the Tarantul...Flanker2.5 had an older variant The Tarantul I

tarantul1-DNSC9701565.JPG

Now there are some very similar variants, but the only one I can see that matches the screenshot perfectly, the Tarantul IV, I can't even find any pictures of, just model kits:

MIR40421.JPG

All I can find about it is that it's the "X" version of the Tarantul, whatever that means

*edit* I realize that pic dosen't match perfectly (the two cannons on the back) But I did find one kit of a Tarantul IV that had them...of course, I chose not to settle for that one and find a real photo...now I can't find it again crazy_o.gif

Not bad, guys.  wink_o.gif

Well, do you know anything about that particular variant of Tarantul? (IV) It's driving me nuts, I can't find anything about it except model kits!

I think they cancelled the Tarantul IV and decided to go with the Molniya-class boat, which basically has an upgraded Nanuchka class missile capability on a Tarantul hull. Either way, I haven't heard of any missile boats getting that new CIWS system. AFAIK, it's only on the Kuznetsov and other capital ships.

That was an F-14 in the video right? I thought it didnt support 2 seater aircraft.

They don't support flyable two-seater aircraft

I just hope for LOMAC they do a better job simulating ECM and missile tracking. In Flanker 2.5, BVR missiles were REALLY hard to evade, and short range missiles were nearly impossible to lose. Okay, American AMRAAMS and such are going to be tough to evade in a Su-33, with crappy Russian jammers and ECMs, but there is no way an R-27 should be able to track like that!

I do hope you're not calling them "crappy" and assuming that the R-27 should be easier to evade, just because they're Russian  rock.gif  That would be quite foolish of you...

I find it very lame when people start assuming that Russian kit is automatically crap just because it's Russian.

These are all taken from CaptainSim's Legendary MIG-21 FS2k2 addon pack and I have to say that those are the damned most realistic looking virtual aircraft I've EVER seen. Check out their C-130s,L-39 and F-104  too...Amazing stuff wink_o.gifsmile_o.gif

(And no I'm not employed by them tounge_o.gif )
