New WIP terrain : FSF Dariyah

Pretty much what I'd be hoping for is an A3MP without the maps, and have the maps be individually packaged and offered as options.

But that's 5.25Gb already. The maps themselves add 679 Mb to the collection. On server startup that might result in a longer load time of 20-30 seconds, but once the server is up and running it doesn't even make that much of a difference how much stuff is loaded.

Redoing what is already made available by the comunity ( A3MP or All in Arma) would be pointless. It woul bring nothing more than already exists.

Regarding big dunes ( dunes in general) it's impossible to make one that realy looks like it should, that is convex/concave slopes, and sharp edges.

The way the terrain is built you always en up with a rather soft and round summit, or very edgy and looking absolutely not natural.

Actually it is my understanding that neither aia or a3mp offers true a3 compatability such as physix and ungraded configs which take advantage of new features.

In regards to the sand dunes tho.. You could model them as a 3d model. That's totally doable.

the ai point of view, that would effect them pretty badly because they dont run on objects they walk

Possibly. But if the idea is to get nice sand dunes in..

Also I've never lived there but dunes can get pretty big. Is anyone really going to be sprinting up a dune?

Of course and I don't know what size is ur height map but you could make that larger and have smaller cells which would allow for more terrain detail.

Sure the 3D object could work, but it's completely out of my capabilities, and i doubt it would look "natural", you's need to tune the color so it integrates with the ground, or make the ground uniform, which is dull. It's already quite impossible to make rocks that feel like they aren't artificial.

Higher terrain resolution is an option (wasn't with Visitor3) but the problem is where to find high resolution terrain sources ?

I use ASTER GDEM data, but it's 30m resolution, and with this, sand dunes look like hills.

The curves and undulations that make sans dunes uniques are lost.

Have you tried running the base data through something like world machine to get more detail? With the right settings you can achieve some pretty natural looking stuff. With the right stuff you should be able to get things looking more like sand dunes.

Given that the new Terrain Builder supports terrain normal maps, if you were inclined, you could also theoretically apply the heightmap as the displacement map of a subdivided plane in something like ZBrush, and apply some fine detail to the terrain, and render out a massive normal map from that. Wouldn't change the actual heights, but it'd give the dunes a bit more visual depth, which seems to be what you're after.
